Travelling with Crystal to enjoy a week of skiing we were dropped with guests for other hotels to the tourist information office. Placing our bags in a line next to the sign for the hotel.
We then walked to the hotel, about a 10/15 minute walk including “the hill” which is fine, unless you do the walk carrying ski boots and skis for the whole family!!
The hotel is rustic in design, warm and comfortable. We travelled as a family of 4 and were in a room on the 4th, top floor. Where we had two singles pushed together and then a further single and one cabin style bed with wardrobe underneath.
The bathroom has plenty of hot water and all you need for a shower after a day in the slopes. There are soap bars, shower/shampoo and shower caps provided, but we bought our own.
There were only 2 plugs in our room, strangely both with a U.K. plug so adapters weren’t needed.
Boots and skis are not allowed in the hotel, there is a secure boot room beneath the hotel. Crocs and sliders were a good choice for walking down we spotted. More benches would have been good, it could get a little crowded, but also a nice chance to chat to other guests.
We didn’t visit the swimming pool, which is open from 4.30 pm which is 30 mins before lifts close. You do need to wear a swim hat, so bring one or buy one for €3. Likewise extra towels were €2 or bring your own.
The highlight of Hotel Splendid is the food and the friendly waiting staff - we were looked after by the lovely Mirko.
Breakfast is buffet in style, cereals, toast, croissants, donuts, fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, cooked eggs, sausages etc, cake, yogurt etc. There is juice, tea, coffee and water available.
Dinner choices are made the evening before. There is a cold buffet with salads/picky bits/bread rolls. Then two savoury dishes - pasta/meat/vegetarian. Then a dessert. Unless you eat a lot, you probably won’t be able to eat everything! The food is plentiful and tasty.
During our trip we had a birthday in the party and they bought out dessert with a sparkler and everyone sang happy birthday - we had 5 during the week we visited.
Opposite the hotel is a private road, follow that (we are allowed as hotel guests) and after a 5 minute walk you’ll be on the slope to ski down to the Clotes chairlift. Only suitable for those who can ski. If you can’t, catch the bus outside the hotel (€2 single or buy a week pass) and take that to the lift.
All in all, hotel splendid is a friendly, clean, warm hotel with great food and comfy beds.
This hotel is NOT ski in and ski out under any conditions unless you can ski up a slope! Unless the main roads are covered in snow then you can expect to walk at least 200 yards to reach slope and as long as you area competent skier you can ski down to the lift!
All lessons take place at the top of the Sportinia lift which will require you to catch a bus too, but this can be accessed outside the hotel.
This hotel is at the top of a steep hill just outside the town centre, so if you have any problems with mobility this is NOT FOR YOU!!
The pool and sauna are free but you will have to buy a swimming hat also they are only accessible during the hours of 430 to 730pm!!
Breakfast is not serve till 8 am so if you are a keen skier And want to be first up the lifts it does make things a little difficult!!
The food in the hotel was great with a fantastic range and selection. This was no easy task for the hotel as we had a variety of food requirements within our group but everyone was looked after very well. There was a fine selction of wines available too.
We 'discovered' a short cut to the slopes which was really handy for the more experienced skiers in the group. For those skiing for the first time there was a shuttle bus that collected from outside the hotel about every 15/20 minutes. The hotel has a ski room in the basement where we could keep our skis and boots each day.
There are several good pubs within a short walk of the hotel if you fancy a stretch of the legs in the evning. If not, the hotel bar is very comfortable and relaxing.
I cannot speak highly enough of the staff in the hotel. Fabiana and all of her team are so friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble and was greatly appreciated. We left an item behind and Fabiana went to a lot of trouble to get that returned to us. We were very very grateful indeed.
Thank you to Fabiana and all the staff for a wonderful stay. We will definitely be returning to Sauze in a few years and there's only one place I will want to stay - Splendid!!
Hotel Splendid was very welcoming, Staff/Family at the reception, in the Bar and in the Restaurant were friendly and helpful. In fact nothing was too much for them. Rooms were spacious and very clean. Perfect for a ski holiday.
The food at breakfast and dinner was both plentiful and delicious. Menu throughout the week was varied and interesting. The Salad Buffet at dinner was great also.
I skied with my adult Son and access was not a problem to the hotel or the slopes/lift. I would not consider this for families with young children as a taxi would needed to be booked/used to navigate your way to the lifts for the beginners areas. There is an infrequent ski bus that does charge for each trip.
It is a steep hill out of the town up the the hotel. Great for stretching those tired muscles but not easy with children in tow I guess.
Absolutely cannot fault this hotel at all, we did a lot of research before booking and I am so glad we booked Hotel Splendid.
The staff cannot do enough for you, I have to mention in particular Francesco the barman and Alex the waiter, you guys made our week!
The food was amazing and always plenty of it with the option of getting more! The way it works is you pick your 3 courses the night before, I am particularly fussy but there was always something for me! There is always salad/veg, cold meats and bread rolls if you want to add it to your plate or have a pre starter starter!
With the bar we had a running tab all week and very reasonably priced!
If you want clean towels just put your used ones in the shower and they will be replaced!
We had use of the pool and sauna via a booking service which was not a problem!
It is a short walk to the slopes cutting across through the road opposite slightly uphill but once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s fine! It is also a short walk from tourist information from the transfer bus but this was also fine and luggage was taken up in a van.
Heated boot room was perfect underneath the bar!
Cannot recommend this hotel enough, we would absolutely go back!
They even opened breakfast at 4.30am on our last morning so we could have a bite to eat and a coffee before our transfer to the airport! Fantastic
Thankyou all at Hotel Splendid for making our stay just splendid!
Lacey, Joe, Shannon and Mat!
Nothing was too much trouble.
We had a 3rd floor room with a wrap around balcony with fantastic views of the mountains.
No tea and coffee facilities which was a little disappointing.
The food was nice, 4 courses every night, although it wasn’t always piping hot it was tasty and a good variety of options. T
The location of the hotel is situated at the top of a hill, if your a beginner and need to use the sportina lift rather than the Clotes lift, then it’s a bit of a trek each morning,(uphill back to the hotel) we opted to leave our ski equipment at the lockers in the mountain at €20 for the whole week.
Overall we were made to feel very welcome
Thank you to everyone at the Splendid but a special mention to Francesco the barman.
