We were impressed most with the hospitality of the owner and all hotel staff. Barbara and her family; Sepp and Rosalinde, have been a wonderful host to our stay at the hotel. The view from our room is stunning and all the hotel's facilities are beyond our expectations. You must try Tiramisu served at the hotel. It is the best we have ever had. Putting all the pleasant experience at the hotel aside, we're also very pleased and thankful that Barbara has helped us getting a new car from Avis after our car had a flat tire. Thank you so much for your help

This picture predates the recent refurbishment of this family-run hotel located all by itself between Oberbozen and Collalbo, at 1300mt in the heart of the Dolomites and where I recently spent 10 days with my elderly sister. I was familiar with the Lichtenstern from previous visits to its excellent restaurant, but when we arrived after a 40' drive from Bolzano I did not recognize the building, now a dramatic structure in glass and concrete, unique in this area. The former prettiness has been replaced by rationality. Each room has a large balcony with a view, but also offers maximum privacy. the flower beds, the swimming pool, the children playground are still there, but now there is a lift to the top third floor and to the sauna and relax zone. Every small detail has been studied to give maximum comfort at no extra cost. I particularly appreciated the Turkish bath and plentiful bathrobes and towels at the swimming pool. We had opted for demi-pension and the buffet breakfast and four-course evening meal proved good value and were served and supervised by the popular Rudy who offered me tasty vegetarian alternatives. Families with children and guests with dogs are welcome at this hotel and adjacent to the restaurant there is a safe play-room for toddlers. Finally, I want to say thank you to the family and staff who made the difference between a good experience and a memorable one. To Barbara, the daughter and owner, always attentive and super efficient. Herr Joseph, the pater familias, who is very much in evidence and has the merit of bringing guests together at the barbecue evenings and the welcome aperitifs and is always the last to go to bed. To his wife Rosalind who is warm and caring and has a gift of making each guest feel like a welcome friend. I shall end, with no apologies for the lengthy review, by observing that many of the Italian guests I met were couples and families who returned year after year, 34 in an extreme case of loyalty, to be looked after and spoilt at the Lichtenstern.

We were at the hotel only for 4 days but it were very perfect 4 days. The idea of stay in this region was hiking (I never had this experience before). And this hotel is perfect for our goal: it is on a hill with excellent view to mountains (covered with snow even in may), good choice of hiking paths, delicious food, nice pool area with jacuzzi. We were there in perfect time...already warn but not so much people at the hotel, at hiking paths, etc. Food: First day at dinner The hotel Owner (not sure if it is correct to state name so will call him The hotel owner 😊) asked us what we want to eat and as I couldn´t make a choice he asked me if I like pasta with shrimps. That time it was the good offer I thought... But when I saw it and tried it...I was about to hug the cook :) it was sooo delicious. The other night we also received made-for-us-out-of-menu desert. I will not be surprised if the Cook has Michelin stars. Food was very perfect all the time (including breakfast). I had my BDay during the stay. So for breakfast I got very tasty chocolate cake. Transportation: the hotel is perfectly situated: on a hill, 3 minutes away from small tram station. Trams go every 20 mins from one town to other. Its approximately 30 mins one way. The hotel is somewhere in the middle. But you will not hear the tram from your room...very quiet and calm. If you go from the hotel to Bolzano it will take about 35 mins: tram + cable car. BTW we received free ticket for all transportation in the region at the hotel while check in. Hiking: a lot of nice, well-groomed paths with marks - so you will not be lost there. The hotel owner gave us a map and recommendations where to go. At the first day, we went kinda far and really didn't have energy to go to hotel by feet. So, we called the owner and he picked us up with a car from one of the Hof´s (restaurant) on the path which he also recommended for food (it was good even if not cheap). Hotel: small but nice room (not new plumbing, but everything what you need for nice stay), comfortable bed, our room also had a balcony...which we never used because spent almost all the time outside. We were I guess the first people who used pool this year...it was only +15. But after all the day hiking it was so perfect to swim even in +15...But we found jacuzzi there :P with view to mountains and +38 water temperature. Hotel also has a sauna but we never had time to go there. Honestly at the end it was very interesting to receive the final invoice for our stay. But it didn´t have any surprises and even didn´t include my BDay cake and ride to the hotel. All our out-of-menu ordered food was not overpriced - just standard price as everywhere. I want to return to Lichtenstern hotel again and again. Would be nice to make it every year tradition (we talked with several people during our stay and most of them were at the hotel for several times already). This is a place which you don’t want to leave. And very romantic (perfect for couples). PS I recommend to book the hotel through their website. They offer half board option only for +10 or 20 euro per person per day. And the dinner consists with 4 courses!! We didnt know it in advance and it was impossible to add this option when at the hotel already - only in advance. Possibly it also works on booking.com but we didn´t find it.

We were staying in Bozen-Bolzano and looked online to see what was at the top of the gondola that went up the mountain. We decided spending Christmas Eve and Christmas night up on the plateau would be nice, and booked this hotel for the next 2 nights. (We're very glad that the first one we contacted was full.) It was such a wonderful stay we are already talking about returning for a milestone anniversary trip later this year. First, the setting is lovely. The view of the Dolomites is stunning, and the fields around the hotel are peaceful. (Being winter, the pool obviously wasn't in use.) Secondly, the family that owns the hotel is quite gracious. We felt very welcomed the whole time. This area was part of Austria until after WWI, so they are primarily German-speaking (though the daughter speaks great English). My husband speaks some German, which did help. But even without that skill, it would have been fine. The family shared their Christmas Eve with their guests. That included singing Silent Night, in about 4 languages, around the Christmas tree, lit with real candles and sparklers. The staff at at the large family table, which says a lot about their character as well. Third is the food! Get the half-board option. Breakfast is a buffet, and they'll cook eggs to order. Dinner was absolutely delicious! They have a great chef. I expect it was a little extra special our nights there due to the holiday, but based on the other reviews, I'm sure it is still marvelous. We at elsewhere on Christmas day for the mid-day meal, as they were full from people coming up from Bozen for the holiday meal. It's no surprise. Another perk from staying up on the plateau (not just this hotel) is the Ritten Card. This pass gives you free museum admissions and public transit during your stay. The electric train that runs from the gondola stop down the hill from the hotel. It is a short hike, but they say they'll pick you up if needed. The only "negatives" are that if you have difficulty climbing stairs it may not be the right place for you as there's no elevator (though they'll help with luggage if you need it), and the bathroom is small, with little space on either side of toilet to the wall or shower stall. But you'll encounter those same issues many places in the country, not just here. America has exceptionally large bathrooms compared to much of the world. This is certainly not a deterrent to us.
