We had yet another fantastic holiday on Lake Garda staying in the Astoria. The hotel overlooks the lake with fantastic views. The staff at the hotel are great and very friendly. We found the food to be excellent and representative of the area. We meet some very nice and friendly people on our holiday but sadly a large coach party were not very nice. The town of Malcesine is a lovely place to visit and just wonder around. We will be returning in May and are about to book the hotel again, we have been staying there since 2006 and travelling to the lake for 23 years. It's our heaven on Earth. Again thanks to the staff at the hotel for a lovely stay.

The reception staff were unfriendly, abrupt and not welcoming on check in. I was charged for a single room supplement and the only room they had available was a single room measuring 3m X 3m which I refused to stay in. This was only resolved by the Tour Guide offering me his room in exchange. Some lights were not working in room, there were no toiletries available except a small bar of soap, there was no mirror over dressing table, there was a charge of 1 Euro per day to use the fridge and 5 Euros for the use of the safe. The carpet was old and stained. The Wi-Fi only just reached the first two floors (there were 4 floors) There was no tea making machine in the room. The shower was very slippery and dangerous with no grab handles or mat. There are no shops nearby and it was about 2 miles to Malcesine the nearest shopping All evening meals had to be pre-ordered the day before from a limited choice set menu– this applied to all residents .There was no a la Carte menu available for any resident We were not permitted to change dining tables for the whole 6 days stay as it confused the waiters !. Tables were 4 or 6 persons. The food was poorly cooked and repetitive –we were offered pork 3 consecutive days and for breakfast boiled or scrambled eggs were served every day – the only hot dish available Despite complaints that potatoes were not cooked and the majority of our party did not eat them, the staff insisted they were cooked ! There were several aggressive and unhelpful conversations with waiters at our table disputing that the food was not cooked despite 70% of residents returning uncooked food. I requested several times that fish be offered on the menu and this did not appear until day 5. The coffee was undrinkable We were informed by reception that drinks ordered at the table had to be booked to the room and that credit cards would not be accepted for amounts below 200 Euros. This generally meant on check out all extras had to be paid for by cash as the room had been prepaid as it was unlikely that extras would amount to 200 Euros. There was not cash machine in the hotel. I offered, on check out, to give the receptionist some friendly constructive criticism of how things could be improved but before I had hardly started I received a string of aggressive abuses and rudeness shouting in a very loud voice – in front of other clients – ending by telling me to “push off” and go away. I heard that other residents had been shouted at and received similar unnecessarily aggressive verbal abuse from the staff. In summary Overall this was a good holiday in Lake Garda totally spoilt by the Hotel quality and the rude attitude of the staff. You would be well advised not to use this hotel. It is listed as a 3 star but it barely qualifies as a two

We visited this hotel as part of a large group. The rooms were basic with no mirror over the dressing table. Despite liking a firm bed the beds were rock hard and very uncomfortable. The management were unbelievably rude and aggressive . They accused my partner of breaking an umbrella which he was not aware of.they tried to scam us to pay for it despite said umbrella being erected the very next day. Never in my life has anyone screamed at me like this man did or have I witnessed staff being so verbally abused. The man continued to stare at us during the meal which upset me hugely. The receptionist shouted at one of our party for not eating a meal he had ordered. The food was indifferent at best and awful at worst..the same style of potato was served every night and sometimes was cold and raw. There was a two hundred euro limit on. Credit cards until our tour manager got them to change it to 60euros which was still too high as all bar drinks had to be paid in cash. There was a charge of 30 euros for the room safe with 25 refunded after the key was returned. A euro a day got you access to the fridge. Pool towels were 5 euros. The swimming pool was totally unheated and the owner lurked around it. To say this was Fawlty Towers was an insult to that fictitious establishment. We paid our bill in cash as we were not comfortable using a card and couldn’t have reached their limit. We strongly complained to our travel company who were quite upset by our experiences. The hotel may be on a bus route but not convenient for a pop into Malcesine after dinner as it was 3miles away. The hotel was situated on a busy road so to reach the lake you needed to cross over it. A hotel on a holiday is supposed to be a pleasant experience and a welcome with a smile.this was not the case. A welcome drink would have been pleasant and is something we have often had at 3star hotels before . This hotel is run on a shoestring. My advice ......don’t use this hotel.

Room 226 - Stayed 27th Sept for 6 nights. Basic triple bedded room. Hotel immediately beside main road down eastern side of Lake Garda - so traffic noise all day and night. Charge for using fridge; charge of 5 euros plus deposit of 25 euros for safety deposit box. Towels thin and ragged down sides. One of bedsheets had hole the size of a 10p piece in it. Shower immediately behind bathroom door - metal rim of some 2mm in floor to stop egress of water from cubicle - but completely insufficient so floor a death trap as you walk into bathroom. (Tried to make it safer by putting towel on floor over rim which did mop up some of the water but not sufficiently to stop the floor being extremely slippery.) Bathroom notably not cleaned one day (stains in toilet pan). No coffee or tea making facilities in bedroom. Meagre breakfast - water in coffee/tea making facility not hot enough. Evening meal was ordered the previous evening. Poor choice. Four of six nights had pork as one of three main courses. Fish option one night; chicken option one night; steak one night. Potatoes generally undercooked - one night they were lukewarm but not cooked at all. One vegetable in addition to potato - one night vegetable was green beans which were so overcooked they had turned green grey and were mushy. Desserts unimaginative - blancmange served twice under guise of Blackcurrant Mousse and Strawberry Mousse. Owners dogs allowed in hotel. Manager/s extremely rude to two of guests in our party for no valid reason.

Hotel didn't meet expectations. Food OK or below average. Room dated and although bathroom looks as though its had a face-lift lighting is terrible and no mirror at dressing table means this is where you do hair and make up. Lake view however is stunning. Charge for fridge key but not exactly cold! 30 min walk to Malcesine but this didn't bother us. You can get a bus if you wish. Went to sailing club for lunch and had dinner at osteria Alla Rosa 1 night. Both service and food excellent.
