Very small rooms with constant smell of damp, without adequate air conditioning or airing, opened windows doesn’t help as they are blocked by cactuses and small in size, so you don’t have promised “sea view”.

Boring and repetitive breakfast, empty plates wouldn’t be refilled, so make sure that you are turning up first.

Rude and unhelpful staff, especially manager, Vincenzo. We had to change our room due to unbearable smell and damp bedding. He said that hotel is fully booked and he can’t help, but as soon as we mentioned to pay extra, he miraculously found one.

There is no parking on site, they are using someone’s driveway down the road, so bringing the car or parking, is a problem.

Bus to the beach is very inconvenient, first run at 11am, so you are just wasting your morning in the hotel(walking is not an option as it’s too far). First return bus at 5 pm and last around 8pm, so you can’t stay for a dinner in Maiori (hotel is quite outside of the town) without booking a taxi.

There’s no shops, restaurants and other amenities around, so you have to drive/ bus to the town.

P.S. Driving around Amalfi coast is a crazy experience, I have some grey hair now:)

I'm not one for writing reviews, I'm too lazy, but felt compelled to sing the praises of this gem in the Almalfi coast.

Hotel -
The hotel is a converted Benedictine monastery, which had been built into a mountain cave. The renovation preserves the historic and rustic charm. It’s an unusual and cool place to stay.

Room -
We stayed in room 3 (Fra Pietro). A little on the small-side in comparison to modern hotel rooms, but then you appreciate it was once occupied by a modest 10th century monk. Overall the room was clean, simply decorated with a few ornate pieces. The bed was comfortable and we slept well.

Service and concierge -
Throughout our stay the overall impression was that the team of staff make it their priority to ensure guests have a comfortable and pleasant stay. Vincento, Italo, Andrea, and the breakfast ladies were warm welcoming, obliging, kind and helpful.

Restaurant -
The outdoor restaurant is on a large balcony area sheltered under an overhead cave. The view across the Almalfi coast is beautiful.
The restaurant is open from early morning to mid-morning for breakfast, and evenings for dinner, and drinks from the bar anytime.
I would recommend the spaghetti with clams if they have it on the specials menu - delicious.

Beach -
Badia guests have use of the Moorea beach club in Maiori. Beach towels, loungers, umbrella are included. There is a bar, toilets/changing room, outside shower.

Parking -
Hotel parking is available a short distance from the hotel. We were advised that maneuvering in and out of the car park is difficult, but Vincento was always happy to fetch and park our hire car between the car park and the front of the hotel whenever we wanted to use the car.

Shuttle -
The hotel is a few miles from the nearest town Maiori, and there isn't a footpath alongside the winding road into town. They have a shuttle bus between the hotel and the centre of town several times during the day and evening.

Museum -
The church that is part of the monastery is a museum that opens a few times in the week. Its free entry and an interesting visit.

Overall -
Something different. And the staff are lovely.

Tip -
The hotel isn't on google maps. If you are driving to the hotel, use google street view to find the hotel then drop a virtual pin to use with google maps sat nav. We booked through Expedia, and at the time, the hotel address wasn't correct. There is another address somewhere else on the page. It's not the address in town, it's a few miles east of the town.

We booked via easyjet holidays. I've visited this area before and loved it.

This hotel is definitely beautiful and unique. The staff try very hard, particularly Italo and the breakfast lady.

We booked a superior room for a minimal additional charge.

When we arrived, we were taken to a very low room that was tiny and were hit by an overwhelming smell of dampness. It was hard to identify where the smell was coming from, on closer inspection you could see the a/c ducting was clogged with dust on the external grill and the bedding actually felt damp to the touch. If our booked room was a superior room, then I'd rather not see a basic room.

Furthermore the room was tiny, by the time you put two people and luggage for 6 nights, there was hardly space to stand and nowhere to unpack either as the wardrobe was tiny. We requested a different room and were advised there were none available - though as soon as we offered to pay additional... a room was immediately found.

Maiori is not the best place to stay in the area and you can definitely find better.

The parking service is standard for the Amalfi coast. Be prepared for some excitement on that road.

Overall, I still love the area, though I was quite disappointed with this hotel, it did not live up to the reviews others have left and I think their website was slightly misleading - the private beach is down in Mairori itself, not within walking distance of the hotel.
Thank Nigel v

I recently spent 4 nights In the Hotel Badia Santa Maria de Olearia (from 4th to 8th of july) The service was great, I had no worry about the car parking, the room was quiet and confortable, the breakfast with its large choice of food and the spectacular view was perfect to me. It is the ideal hotel for those who like unique architecture with history (it was a thousand years old monastery) in a quiet place that offers the ultimate confort of a great hotel.

Hi. You cannot walk to the beach from the hotel because the beach area is yet-to-be developed at the foot of the cliff. Once that is open, it will be a walk and it looks like it will be totally awesome and unique, like... More
