From the moment you step foot into Masseria Trapana you encounter the most enchanting, charming, beautiful, and hospitable place you've likely ever been. The grounds are immaculate. The rooms are huge with high ceilings and amazing beds, bathrooms, and courtyards. The pool is surrounded by apricot trees, flowers, and very large comfortable chaise lounges. The underground grotto hot tub is simply divine. The owner is extremely detail oriented, and everywhere you look you will encounter beauty and calm. The service is EXCEPTIONAL. You want a negroni on the rooftop before dinner to watch the sunset? no problem. Something off the menu? no sweat. The firepit and hammocks are another fun element. Additionally, there is a hat room with a variety of sun hats to wear throughout your stay...and a croquet and bocce ball lawn. If you are travelling to Lecce this cant be missed.

We had a truly wonderful stay at Masseria Trapana this September. The place is a dream. From the incredible staff that goes far above and beyond —Nebile, Gabriele, Christian, Antoni (and everyone else)— to Rob the wonderful host, visionary, and owner, to the group of guests who’s company we so enjoyed, this was a very special stay. Every detail design-wise is beyond chic and gorgeous, but still totally comfortable. From the luscious fruit trees and flowers everywhere, the croquet and bocce courts, the homemade marmalade and limoncellos, the massive fire pit, I can’t say enough about this oasis. It is such a tragedy that the olive trees in the south of Puglia have been demolished by a devastating virus, but once inside the walls of the Masseria everything is so verdant you’d never know. My mother had an injury before arriving and everyone was so helpful, attentive to her needs, and made her very comfortable. We aren’t people who typically make “vacation friends,” but the guests at Trapana were so special, and the atmosphere so convivial, we found ourselves chatting to everyone and having wonderful long nights imbibing at the fire pit together. Even the Masseria cats (miss you Rosie) were the loveliest. To note, my room was an absolute showstopper (with a huge wraparound patio with outdoor bath, enormous rooftop deck, fireplace, and soaring ceilings). My parents had a stunning courtyard suite. I’m lucky to have stayed in some fabulous places throughout my life, but Masseria Trapana will stick with me and I will full-throatedly recommend it to everyone traveling to Puglia in the future!

Lost for words on this place, it was just WOW. You drive up to it with a little trepidation as you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere..then the doors open and from then on it is just magical. The beauty of the gardens and the pool, the rooms are enormous with incredible linens and the best towels I have every used in a hotel ...so soft and luxurious. The shower was surprisingly hot with great water pressure. The team are classic Italian easy going service with a smile but you are so relaxed you just go with it and love it! The proprietor is a season hotelier and does not miss a beat! The buffet breakfast was the usual fare but the omelette was something to write home about. We were lucky to be there on Pizza night, where you go into the kitchen and make your own pizza - so much fun and it was FABULOUS! The best thing about this hotel was the absolute peace and tranquility, you feel like you are staying at a friends Villa, not in a hotel and I can't wait to go back. Thank you Rob and team for an amazing few days, I came back so rested, I felt like I had gone away for a week.

We stayed at the Trapana for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon - we booked the North Suite - which was massive and absolutely wonderful. A large, bright living area and similar size bedroom with a bathroom off and partial outdoor shower and outdoor bath. The room was airy and cool (and believe me it was HOT) and the views spectacular.
The staff and service was impeccable - very relaxed but professional and friendly and the food was always delicious. The outdoor restaurant was shaded by lemon trees and was wonderful. Robert (the owner) was generally around and chatted to everybody. We met some friends of his and spent a very boozy afternoon (and evening!)
The pool area and gardens were well kept and the whole Masseria was very private. The views from the roof top terrace were lovely (shame that the olive trees have died).
In short this hotel lived up to everything we hoped for in a short, romantic stay (apart from that boozy afternoon!) and we'll remember it as one of our favourite stays ...

We stayed at Masseria Trapana for 4 days after attending a business conference at Borgo Egnazia in order to explore historic Lecce and the surrounding area.
Trapana is a beautifully restored masseria dating back to the 1300’s and was a passion project of the owner Rob, a renowned Australian hotelier.
There are 9 beautifully decorated rooms each with it’s own distinctive character.
The property has a vast array of fruit trees and little touches such as the fire pit which provide sanctuary from the hot afternoon sun or a pre dinner drink when evenings are cooler.
We even ventured into the underground mineral pool which used to be part of the olive oil mill.
The food was excellent and the dinner menu varied daily. One of the highlights was the chicken salad inspired by the Buda Bar in Paris.
We will definitely return for another visit as we only ventured into Lecce once and spent the rest of the time just relaxing and enjoying the tranquility and hospitality of this Puglian Paradise

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Sadly, this place is totally run down and at the prices they charge is a total rip off. The chairs are dirty by the swimming pool, there are flies everywhere. The service is terrible. The staff are inexperienced and looked shabby. No water was left in the bedroom and not even a mini-bar. I am not a fussy traveller but this place was so disappointing. The aircon was centrally controlled and didn’t work properly. The place was depressing and we couldn’t wait to get out of there. We stayed in three other places in our Puglia trip. Masseria Corsano, Masseria Calderisi and Castle Elvira who were all great and far superior to this place which is well well past its best This place looks nothing like its photos. I am astonished by the other good reviews which were so different to our experience. The owner was not there when we were there and wouldn’t even get on the phone to listen or address our concerns.

Response from Robert Potter Sanders, Owner at Masseria Trapana
Responded 18 Mar 2023
Dear “ROB M”. Firstly, let me address the fact that you didn’t stay in the hotel and you were here for an hour. The reality is that you wanted to stay at the Hotel of a friend’s brother and they were running late in opening due to delays in renovations so you booked our hotel as a back-up. You then tried to cancel on the day when we have a strict cancellation policy, it was the height of our season and we were fully booked. We are a nine-suite hotel. You are absolutely correct there are no mini bars in the room as it is a 16th Century building and the design didn’t lend itself to us placing them in the rooms. We have full room service. You are also correct, there was no water in the room as it is placed in the rooms at turn down and you came in the afternoon. Again, we are happy to deliver it immediately should you have requested it. You are not correct that the air conditioning is centrally controlled. It is individually controlled but how you could have worked this out in an hour, remains a mystery. How you could have known this without checking in, we are at a loss to explain. “I think this place is depressing” was simply made up to punish us. Every review on this site is authentic and if you had read them you would have seen that in fact, it is not the conclusion of all our other guests. It is interesting that you wrote the owner was away and refused to speak to us. You are correct, I was away for two days but how could it be possible I didn’t take a call from you when I found out about your behaviour after you had left the property. Another fabrication. So, in Summary, you had decided that you didn’t want to stay here prior to arriving as you wanted to stay at the newly opened hotel of your friend’s brother. As we have a cancellation policy in place, the only way you thought to be refunded was to make a fuss on arrival which you did. We did not submit to your “Aggressive” tactics” and the only way that you could feel better, was to write a report that is not factual or true in any sense. We as hoteliers work very hard to provide the best experience possible to our guests. My team are well dressed and very polite as is the nature of the Pugliese. It is sad that anyone feels that it is appropriate to write something so personal and incorrect. My staff explained how rude you were to them and having not experienced guests of that nature previously, they were shocked. I am really sorry that you were not able to have your money returned on the day of your arrival but disappointed you treated my staff in the way you did. Its extraordinary on how much you managed to squeeze into one hour at our hotel. “We couldn’t wait to get out of there” - We are so glad that you did as we prefer to focus our attention the many amazing guests that we have.

The most perfect place to relax and enjoy Puglia. The architecture and design of the Masseria is just stunning and the staff are all wonderful and will do anything to make your visit a pleasure. It is very difficult to pick a favourite pastime, Sitting having breakfast or dinner under the lemon trees, the beautiful pool area, the amazing underground mineral pool, a heavenly massage or a predinner limoncello spritz.
The food is all sourced locally and delicious, fabulous wine and service. They also organised a wonderful tour of Lecce with beautiful and well informed Sabrina.
You really need a car to tour around and they can organize this as well.
Nothing is too much trouble.
Thank you Rob!

Masseria Trapana is paradise in Puglia. We’ve stayed at other 5 star Masserias and nothing quite compares to Trapana. The rooms are spectacular. The grounds are surrounded by fruit trees and the pool area feels like Eden. Rob is a phenomenal owner and operator. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure your days at the masseria or outside of it, exploring beach clubs or lecce, are extraordinary. The underground cave like hot tub is wonderful.

Masseria Trapana is a magical place to stay. Everything has been carefully considered, and the rooms and grounds are serene and beautiful. We have visited a number of times and are already planning our next visit. Visit Lecce (which is wonderful) by all means, but you may decide never to leave the Masseria itself. The food is delicious, and everything is designed to be restful, relaxing and generous.

You would need a car. The various towns around Trapana are none of them very far away. We never left, though, because we had everything we needed and wanted right there.
