You can use the very nice private beach 5 mins walk away at the Cefalu sea palace hotel (get your towels at reception there). They have a bar there on the beach.
The hotel has a fantastic location. Loads of restaurants snd shops nearby. Brilliant supermarket 5 min walk away.
Breakfast is included and it's situsted in a beautiful rooftop garden. While there is lots of cakes and pastries, just like too sweet. The only hot thing you can get is an omelette made by a very grumpy chef. And he will only make a plain omelette!
Staff at reception were super helpful and friendly. We had asked for quiet rooms, but they put us right by reception so it was quite noisy. The restaurant (serving drinks and light snacks) is open late and gets busy hence the noise.
When checking in, we were surprised by some of the rules, which we have never come across before!
1. You are given a pool towel but have to pay 5 euros to change it.
2. You get given one key per room and are charged 5 euros if you lose it.
3. You are not allowed to take any food or drink to your room and can only use what is offered in the mini bar, which was minimal. This wasn't too much of a problem except for when Housekeeping didn't replenish the fridge so I had no option but to bring refreshments from elsewhere.
4. You are not allowed to hang your wet towels on the balcony. I understand it doesn't look nice when towels are draped over the balcony but at least provide something to hang them on inside the balcony.
The room was very basic, which I expect in Italy but it was clean. There was very minimal hanging space and the two drawers were so tiny, you could hardly fit anything in them. Bring your own hangers as there are only a few. There were also only two plug sockets, one being in the bathroom!
On our first night, we were kept awake by loud music which seemed like it was coming from above. We had no warning of this and it didn't stop until very late.
Breakfast was the worst I think we've ever encountered in a hotel. There were far too many sweet options, the sausages and bacon looked inedible and my husband even spotted mould on the strawberry's.
The bar at the front of the hotel was quite nice and the staff were friendly except for one who was extremely rude to me but really friendly with my husband.
The pool area is small but we never had a problem getting a sunbed. You can also use sunbeds on the beach for free in the hotel area, where they have a little restaurant/bar. The staff there were very friendly.
We caught the train to Palermo, which was super easy. The station was about ten minutes walk from the hotel.
Cefalu is a beautiful town with narrow, cobbled streets so it is definitely worth staying there if you're visiting Sicily.
The Hotel rooms themselves are very Clean and modern, but staff seem to look after outside visiting guests to the bar and restaurant and rooftop terrace better than they treat their hotel guests.
You are not allowed to drink anything in your room, unless it is purchased from the mini bar or from the bar downstairs, including water, We were told off for bringing a bottle of water into the hotel from outside.
We were also told off like children by a very rude owner for putting our towels over the balcony to dry, I think I know the real reason for this.
Staff around the hotel seem very miserable and unhappy and didn't engage with Hotel guests only with people eating and drinking at the bar and restaurant.
I loved Sicily and especially cefalu, but I will not be staying at this hotel the next time we visit.
Our suite, which we booked 6 months in advance, offered us the expected luxury for 4 nights, especially with the fully glazed living area of around 60 square meters in front of the bedroom, which gave you the feeling of being close to the sea, but also brought peace and quiet when it was too loud outside.
Everything is very high quality and tastefully furnished, but unfortunately sometimes according to the motto "design comes before function". That's the only way I can explain the bathroom, which is far too playful for sober Teutons. 2 large tower-like sinks - but no space to put anything down, because the small glass side table on both floors is covered with samples from the hotel spa and all sorts of useless things. Make-up? A challenge according to my wife, as there is little space, bad light and no magnifying mirrors. The shower was also impractical in its layout and why you get such thin toilet paper for €360 a night is a mystery to me.
There is also very limited space for your clothes - enough for a weekend trip, but less so for a longer stay.
But an excellent bed and the large, luxurious living area made up for a lot and the staff were without exception very friendly and always helpful - just as it should be!
The breakfast at the top (on the terrace or in the glassed-in interior) offered a good selection and included both Sicilian specialties (some from the hotel's own patisserie) and the breakfast options that are common in Central Europe.
