This place was unbelievably awesome! My friend and I drove in through Mt Somers and the road there was incredible. The scenery is just like in LOTR, and you do feel removed from everyone else. We stayed 1 night there supposedly, but in the end extended our stay to another night. The rooms are exceptionally clean and the floor has heating so you wont feel the cold. The kitchen is outdoors so be prepared to bring food to cook etc. The wifi you have to pay for it, but then again you are in this beautiful remote area, i'm pretty sure you dont need it just enjoy the pure nature! There are some nice walks around, including the one to Mt Sunday. Head to it in the morning before any other tourists arrive by early afternoon and you'll get the entire area to yourself. We tried some…
we did not stay overnight. but we spend couple of hours in and around the property, visited Mt. Potts and had lunch there. If you are an LOTR fan you have got to see the place and even hike up Mt Sunday. The view from there is amazing.
I stayed here for a wonderful two nights in one of the bunk rooms ($45 pp/pn). Rosalie was very kind and helpful. You can do some great walks from their property. One of the first ones I did gave me a great view of Mt. Sunday, AKA Edoras. This is a really stunning area, away from everything. I could have stayed much longer. Highly recommended!!
Mt Sunday is the site of Edoras from the Lord of the Rings movie. It is situated near Methven in the South Island of New Zealand. In Methven they will tell you that it is an hours drive. I found it more like 1 1/2 hours. The last. 25 k is on gravel. Having said that the trip was well worth it. Easy access from the road a short walk across the flat and then the easy climb to the top. I regretted not bringing a rug and making a picnic of it. Be warned, It is generally extremely windy!
Although it is up a 20 Km unmade road, the effort is well worth it. No TV, no wi-if and no phone signal - brilliant for some peace and quiet with stunning views. Take you own food. Excellent outdoor BBQ facility. Rooms are very well equipped, spotless and comfortable. Our reception was welcoming very friendly. Wish we could have stayed longer.
We had a wonderful stay at Mt Potts Lodge. Rosalie and Patrick were absolutely fantastic hosts - very accommodating to our German family group and gave good recommendations for walking tracks to get the best views of the area. The deluxe rooms are very comfortable and well equipped with utensils to use in the communal BBQ area. There was no wifi in the rooms, only down at the Lodge but it was actually nice to have no reception and be completely off the grid. The Two Thumbs craft beer and cider sold at the lodge tasted great, even better when you can sit on the balcony looking out at the Two Thumbs mountain range. Awesome experience, we will be back for sure!
Sweet view from our room. Has a lot of mountains and outdoor area around to explore. Really close to other tourist spots like Mt. Sunday (Edoras), Clearwater Lake, Two thumb ranges and of course Mt. Potts etc. It is excellent for families (especially with children) and couples. It has the outdoor vibe and atmosphere which really suites the location Outstanding hospitality too! 10/10 experience! Highly recommended if you are going to travel South Island.
Usually in the area for a day trip we wanted to spend a little longer in the beautiful surroundings and took a weekend straight after work. Friendly hosts who were happy to let us just stay under the radar, put us up in a clean, comfortable room. Would stay again for certain!
Having heard family members speak enthusiastically about Mt Potts Lodge I was eager to see if it lived up to my expectations. It actually surprised me by surpassing all expectations. The scenery really did take my breath away and I could have sat in the lodge looking at the view all day. The changing weather is emphasised in a location such as Mt Potts and you feel so tiny in such a massive panorama. The ensuite studio room was beautifully appointed and cleaner than you could imagine. There was a microwave, toaster, jug and fridge in the room and an outside BBQ as others have said. After sitting outside watching the sunset it was lovely to relax in a deep bubble bath before sleeping soundly. I didn't allow enough time to experience all the area offers and will have to return.…
IGNORE OLD REVIEWS and read this before booking Mt Potts was for me a delightful place. But it will not be to everyone's liking. Mt Potts caters to individuals and groups, and has at least three different classes of accommodation so people's comments here may be different to my experience. This review is as a couple travelling independently staying in one of the Deluxe Studios 1: There has been a recent change of facilities and management so old reviews that mention an on site cafe or restaurant are out of date. 2.1 INDEPENDENT TRAVELLERS MUST BRING THERE OWN FOOD. If you are not staying as a wedding party or corporate group you must bring your own meals. The nearest shop is 1 hour away, but really you should get supplies in Ashburton, Methven or Darfield. 2.2 In the Delux…
