We had a great time at Mt Potts but they need to improve several things. First of all they don't provide any food service. Thankfully I was reading a comment on trip advisor regarding the fact that they didn't have a restaurant open. I call the place and they confirmed that their chef left for holidays. I was very surprised as it is meant to be their highest season. We were told that there is a kitchen for us to use. It is outside under a shed and could be cleaned a bit more. The bin in the kitchen hasn't been emptied for a while and hasn't been emptied whilst we were there (2 nights). So possums came at night looking for food and spread rubbish everywhere. Rooms are nice and basic but for the price you can expect to have a least some kind of food offering and a cleaner…
The Mt Potts Lodge is a lovely accomodation surrounded by beautiful nature. It's quite far away from any town, but this makes it very special, calm and ideal for hiking or outdoor activities. The staff is really friendly, helpful and nice! If you look for a calm place away from busy city life, i would definitely recommend it!
The Lodge is some 40 kilometres from the nearest town at the back of a stunning alpine valley, where the humming of bees and mooing of cattle is the only thing you will hear. The last 20 kilometres or so of the road to Mt Potts are on gravel roads. This is no big deal even for smaller cars as long as you adjust your speed, but make sure your hire car is sufficiently insured. The rooms are nice and clean. There is a microwave, a kettle and a fridge in the room. Some plates and cutlery are available. There is no TV. The whole complex is a short hop away from Mt Sunday, used widely in the Lord of the Rings movies. When I booked, the hotel had a minimum stay of two nights for the rooms. I believe you can have an amazing time at this lodge but take good care with the following: I…
Close to Edoras, feels like middle earth beautiful nature with high mountains, friendly hostel personel, nice place with good beds, the cafe is not active but will be in the future. Limited cooking facilities, best to bring food.
what a beautiful and fantastic place! First you have a great trip on gravel roads into the Rangitata Valley, which you may know from the LOTR movies. It is as stunning as you can imagine. You have Mt Sunday (Edoras) on your doorstep, you just have to climb it. And there is a great lodge. We spent two nights on the camping place (we were the only campers even though it was high season) and we loved it. And they have the prettiest and coolest bbq place in NZ.
We turned up at Mount Potts assuming we would be camping on a basic campsite. We were absolutely thrilled to find a great place in a beautiful location with a bar, a bunkhouse and some really lovely accommodation. If you are camping or at the bunk house, you can cook in a delightful outdoor kitchen. It has everyone's needs covered. The best part of our stay was the wonderful welcome we were given by Abby and Caven, the managers. They were extremely helpful and made us feel very at home. It has been the best place we have stayed on our summer holiday so far and we will be back to explore the stunning scenery of the Rangitata Valley.
Was amazing value. Had the place almost completely to ourselves. The owners were lovely and helpful. Walking distance (1km dirt road) to Mt Sunday (Edoras). Sunset was beautiful, amazing corner of the world. Facilities were great. Outdoor kitchen. Bring bug spray as the mosquitos are present near the creek. A little windy so bring a jumper. If you find our rental's hub cap on the way there, don't hesitate to use it as a frisbee.
Normally there are 4 things I look for in a hotel. Good service, a great location, a comfortable bed and a decent shower. The service at Mt Potts lodge was outstanding - nothing was too much trouble from the wonderful management couple who made us feel warm and welcomed. The location is spectacular - quiet, secluded with to die for views. But the bed was a tad hard for me and the shower/bath flow was diabolical - over an hour to fill the bath. Overall, I would definitely come back.
Abby and Cavan the 2 hosts are sweet and very welcoming. I ve stayed in many big hotels around the world and 1-2 overall can match this experience I had in their lodge. They have a great selection of drinks at the bar, you can chitchat or if u decide to be a bit in peace you can take a walk on mount Sunday and get that special middle earth. My partner even proposed to me during our trip it was an amazing stay and we can t wait to go back again. Do not forget that there are very few places around this world where no one will bother you. Leave this world behind a bit and go get some time off.
Camped here for an evening on a whim and had a really great evening hosts Cav & Abi really made the evening. Chatting to new friends around the camp fire. Really good night. Only thing I'd say is the rates for an un powered site or bunk room are quite steel for a regular visit.
