My husband and I stayed at Mt Potts for 5 nights over the Easter Holidays on our honeymoon and we were blown away with the natural beauty of the area, the hospitality of the staff and the delicious meals!

If I could give the service 6 stars I would! Jack and the rest of the team went above and beyond for the duration of our stay! Jack made himself available for us and was genuinely kind he made us feel so comfortable and welcome.

Staying over here Easter holiday the restaurant was unfortunately closed on some of the days that we stayed - however the outside kitchen and bbq area provided everything we needed to make easy meals and when the restaurant was open we took full advantage of the amazing restaurant. The chef Joe does a great job making beautiful food with generous portion sizes! When we did have the chance to eat in the restaurant we were very impressed!

We spent the first 4 nights in our tent and the last night in a bunk room. Although there are only two showers they provide great water pressure and very hot water which is a plus staying in a tent!

Edoras (Mt Sunday) was magical - we hiked it 3 times during our stay (once at sunrise, once mid day and once at sunset) each time the natural beauty blew us away! My husband is an avid LOTR fan so Edoras was top on his list and it didn’t disappoint! It is his favourite filming location to date! We also hiked Mt Guy which provided a beautiful 360 view of the area and walked around the beautiful lake Emma to the historic hut.

We would highly recommend Mt Potts lodge to other like minded travellers who value great customer service, beautiful nature and an off the beaten track vibe! Thank you Jack, Joe and the rest of the team - who knows you may see us again on our way back up north!!

We stayed in an unpowered camp space with our campervan for 35$ (per vehicle, NOT per person) for one night, while we explored Mount Sunday and checked out the sights of Erewhon station as we are big Lord of the Rings fans.

The café / restaurant / lounge area is cozy, complete with a small bookshelf, pool table and chess / checkers game. The person who welcomed us was very nice and serviceable. We ordered lunch which was delicious, and served in very generous portions relative to the unexpensive price.

The next morning we ordered breakfast to confirm our thoughts and yes, it was again marvellous and filling, way worth the price.

Honestly one of the best experience we've had staying at a lodge in New Zealand, especially one this far out in a remote location.

Would recommend, especially the restaurant !

We Booked a camping site for Saturday 13 March 2021. Mt Potts Lodge is a wonderful little hideaway tucked in the New Zealand's back country surrounded by breathtaking mountains and beautiful rivers.
Without a doubt we were very well looked after. I can truly say it's some of the best views in NZ.
The amenities were all so close to where we were camping it was so easy to roll out of bed and have a lovely hot shower!
We loved it so much, we really didn't want to go back to City where we live. If only we could’ve stayed longer we would’ve.
Ours hosts a gentleman called Philip and our lovely Russian lady called Rita they were friendly and extremely helpful.
Food available this evening was vegetarian pizza or a pepperoni really started to have one of each this was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had.

Let me start by saying first and foremost… Colin is a great guy and I absolutely loved his company. So this review isn’t personally towards my good fella. I will say tho, that if you’re gonna spend $230-$300+ each and it’s a group of you…you’ll be better off staying somewhere for your comfort. It’s a great lil town, so if you have a freedom van or camper, it’ll be perfect! Our entire wedding party complained about these deluxe en-suites and the cabin for the bride & groom. First off, there’s no microwaves in none of the rooms so we had to eat our kfc chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and other food cold. All the fridges were broken and blowing out super hot air. So no cold water or drinks. These were our major two issues. The hot water kept going out while I was filling the bath up and that wasn’t cool at all. Water pressure is already very low and take forever. That’s not a worry at all tho. Our bride told us that we had the leave the toilet door open when we used it in the cabin because the door was jammed and it locked her friend in there for 20 minutes 🤦🏾 Also no working wifi at all in that area that day because if weather and it’s satellite… or no mobile data service AT ALL. That’s not a biggie because it gives you opportunity to just relax, connect with your partner/spouse and disconnect from the internet

I booked a bunk room at Mt Potts lodge, costing $110 for the night. During the night a high pitched piercing beep began to sound and lasted all night. It wasn’t the smoke detector, but an old system that was connected to underfloor heating. The room was super warm so I knew it was on as I didn’t have the heater running. There was no possibility to turn it off and after earplugs and pillows over my head didn’t work I even considered going to sleep in my car, but it was damn cold. The following morning I reported it to staff and said how I didn’t sleep and that I wanted some kind of compensation after showing her the fault. She heard the sound and commented that she had heard it before from the room I was in... She said she was not capable of making the decision to give me some type of refund. I asked for someone who could. She messaged another person and he came and looked. He said it wasn’t her fault (the staff member) after I said I want compensation for the worst night ever due to almost no sleep. It didn’t sound when he was there and he said it was the smoke detector, even though I had removed the battery earlier so knew it wasn’t. I was then told neither of them had the ability to compensate and that I would have to talk to the owner, who is very rarely there. I left my details and was told I would get a call or email. I specifically mentioned I would like to sort it out within a week. No call or email from anyone after 10 days. Very dissatisfied and a terrible way to treat customers given the circumstances. Nice location but pity the owner and staff who operate the tourism side of the station don’t show more care for customers. I will never stay there again and recommend people choose elsewhere.

Called in for lunch at the Mt Potts Lodge – the only place potentially serving refreshments on the long gravel road drive up from Mt Somers.

We arrived hungry and thirsty to find that no food was available and only black coffee could be served as they didn’t even have any milk. They did have a few bottles of alcoholic and soft drinks.

An annoying disappointment, especially as there is no sign at the turn off to warn that food is not available and the next opportunity to eat is around a one hour drive back down the gravel road.

Star ratings include a rating for rooms - I clicked on that by mistake and could not undo the rating. We did not stay, so I have no basis on which to give a rating. My mistake - apologies

Response from NZaccommodation, Manager at Mt Potts Lodge
Responded 26 Feb 2020
Hello Chris, I am so very sorry this happened to you as I pride myself in looking after all of our customers and making sure they have good food to enjoy because as you state it is a long way to travel just for coffee. Certain circumstances meant that myself (the chef) could not be present at this time so unfortunately you got given a sub par experience. I strongly recommend if you are local visiting us again soon and have a better experience and on the house on my behalf. If you can read our previous reviews then you will see that we are quite consistent in our restaurant. Having limited staff here (2) means that when a unforeseen circumstance such as this one arises then the system falls and crumbles and I am certain this review should not reflect the overall work, time and effort that is put into running this small business. I apologize again as I can empathize with your situation Kind regards, Management

Incredibly beautiful hidden oasis. Spectacular mountain views and fresh mountain air. We stayed in the lodges premium accommodation, very tidy and comfortable. Huge thanks to Chef Dave, the cafe food was tasty and beautifully presented. Special thanks to Jack the lodge manger, going above and beyond for every customer. We booked a helicopter ride from the lodge that took us out over Mt Potts and the surrounding mountains, landing on a glacier, absolutely breathtaking. The lodge has plenty of different accommodation options from camping to premium rooms to beautiful high end private cottages. Highly recommended, we will be back!

Awesome stay at Pots lodge. We walked the section from the Raikaia river to the Rangitata and it was a great place to have a rest. We walked to Mt Sunday the following day (very nice stroll along the road) The lodge manager (Jack) was so helpful and very welcoming. The chef is a great cook, really nice simple meals done well. Highly recommend A++

We had a really negative experience with Mount Potts Lodge. We booked accommodation for April well in advance of our trip (the previous October). Upon arrival, we were greeted with a “closed” sign and nobody in sight, with the site looking very much abandoned. After tracking down a neighbour, we were told that the owners were away, and that they were supposed to have contacted us to let us know that our booking had been cancelled. I emailed the owners, and was later told that they had sent an email to cancel 3 days prior to our stay. When I reviewed the email thread I had been CC’d into, the owner had made 2 spelling errors in my email address (despite my having emailed them directly from the correct address to make the original booking), and so we did not receive the email. We understand that human error occurs, but given the short time frame for the cancellation, believe the owners should have been more thorough in their communication. Luckily we were able to return to Mt Somers and find alternative accommodation, but this certainly tainted our experience of Mount Sunday, and created a lot of unnecessary stress.

The Mount Potts Lodge has hands down the friendliest most accommodating staff! Not to mention an amazing restaurant with a crazy-delicious amount of options on their menu to choose from. The kumara fries are arguably one of the best things I’ve ever eaten—the sweet chili & cream toppings were perfection! I’ve eaten at a lot of restaurants in New Zealand, being that I am walking all 3000km from Cap Reinga to Bluff on Te Araroa, and this spot is my absolute favorite. Don’t miss it!

Hi Mat, Yes, you could drive camper-van on the gravel road to reach Mt Potts Lodge. There is small stream (ford) that you may have to cross to get to Mt Sunday from the lodge and at the moment it is totally dried up and still I advise you to come up to the lodge and find out if you can cross it or you can park your camper-van here at the lodge and take a walk to Mt Sunday. Hope this is helpful. Thank you.
