This is now our new favourite camping ground! Shade, nice facilities, lovely owners, good showers, river, beaches, walks, big sites... I feel like I could go on. It's got everything! A great place to stay if you're doing the Abel Tasman walk, even just a part of it like us. We kayaked to Observation Beach with our kids (guided tour with Kahu Kayaks I highly recommend) then walked the 3 hours back to camp. Was amazing. We had a lovely camping spot for our campervan with a picnic table near us to relaxe at and the gentle bubbling of the river nearby. We were prepared for mosquitos but didn't come across many. We had dinner at Hooked on Marahau one night. Was amazing! 20 mins walk from the camp. Split Apple Rock is 15 mins drive away and worth a visit. A beautiful place to swim and explore, especially if it's low tide.

What a wonderful camp ground. The facilities are clean and well kept. I Love how the sites are surrounded by trees and in groups so that you don’t feel like you are in the middle of a great big camp ground.

Gorgeous deep swimming hole and lots of space to roam

It’s really quiet at the moment so if you are local get down there for the weekend.

A friend recommended this place and it's a real gem. Family owned and operated it has a super friendly feel. The facilities and camp spaces have been well thought out ie. Trees planted for shade and privacy and a safe water hole made in the river for kids and adults to swim. Enjoyed it so much we stayed two weeks!

You can not make a booking, which makes planning really hard. we were told to turn up after 1pm and that it wouldn’t be a problem that they would have space. So we packed up two caravans and children but on arrival we’re told they were fully booked and the lady was very rude. Luckily The barn down the toad took us in and were amazing and we will definitely continue to stay with them instead.

Stayed at Old MacDonald's for two nights in a campervan in November. Highlights included meeting a 12-week old puppy at reception (hi i miss you doggo!), and the charming limes/lemons on sale at the desk that lasted us for the duration of our trip.

We stayed in the Bull Pen pasture. Great views and not a lot of other vans there.

Only heads up -- the bathrooms and showers are all outdoor, which can be chilly on those spring evenings!

I had planned to walk abel tasman but got stuck here for six days with a leg injury. Notable highlights were: river swims, bush areas and listening and seeing all the native birds! Showers were free and hot! It’d be great to have composting available tho! :-0

What an amazing place can't praise it enough. Booking was via email and super efficient. Oodles of space to camp in and choice. Good clean facities and showers were super powerful with loads of hot water. Fantastic location surrounded by bush and the beautiful river for swimming in. Super safe for kids to swim. Quiet peace of bush and grass then 10 mins walk to sea and able tasman right on your door step. We stayed for 2 weeks and had a great family experience. So chilled.

Really nice place but ruined by gang members appearing to live at the place. Won't be back if this is the case. Is quite intimidating having them around. Did not feel comfortable at all. Really surprised a place like this would want them there.

Response from Craig M, Manager at Old Macdonald's Holiday Park
Responded 9 Aug 2018
Hi Jenny, Unfortunately we did honour a booking from some gang folk, unknown at the time of booking & actually were very friendly and well behaved, like yourself we too were concerned of potential intimidation with other guest's & tried our best to accommodate them in a separate area which was the case, fortunately we do have a large property with four accommodation area's. I do hope that you were able to complete your visit around NZ & found accommodation's with less intimidating guests. I'm not sure what precautions I can take to avoid conflicting belief's in the future. Take care. Regards Craig

We stayed at this holiday park for two days over Easter and loved it. We were in a motor home and the spots they had were spacious and very green (we are not fans of built-up holday parks where all the spots on one sealed asphalt and the one campers is directly next to its neighbor). There is a swimming hole in the small steam that passes next to the campground and other activities for young families. Our kids made friend immediately with other campers.

They had a variety of activities and the value for money was exactly what we were looking for.

The location is also great for hiking into the Abel Tasman, it is at the beginning of the trail.

We stayed either side of completing the Abel Tasman track and this is an excellent location to base a walk in the park from. The service was good and our 5 bed cabin was clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the air conditioning unit - a rare extra for this type of accomodation. The property is rustic with aging facilities and the grounds a bit unloved but there is plenty of wildlife to enjoy, and the showers were hot and free! There is a well stocked shop on site open long hours. Would recommend for a short stay.

Yes, at least 4 behind the sanitary unit next to the stream. These are actually nice places!
