Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We camped here for seven nights and really enjoyed our stay. A lot of people only stay a night or two in their campervans, so the campground empties out each morning and fills up again at night. The facilities are kept really clean and although this is a busy campground with only one amenity block,I only had to wait briefly for a shower on one or two occasions. The campground is not too big and is safe for kids - our son had lots of fun riding his bike. It’s conveniently located and has lots of big shady trees which is a definite bonus. We will be back.

We stayed here with a camper van and experienced good kitchen and bathroom facilities, nice outdoor seating for dining too and great location for visiting Abel Tasman. WiFi seemed pretty good compared to other campsites too. Would stay again!

We spent two days camping here in October..... it was cold.... we had ice on the tent. But the days were fabulous, sunny and warm. The campground was the perfect location , a short walk to the start of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. The water taxi leaves from opposite the camp so we were delivered ‘home’ to our doorstep at the end of the day. Perfect! The kitchen and bathroom facilities were immaculate and the staff were friendly and helpful. We loved it here.

I was on edge from the moment I arrived, as we pulled up to very cramped living on top of each other quarters. My heart sank further as the neighbours music bellowed through our camper. The camp it’s self where as it’s very old and in serious need of updating , is very clean and there was always someone scurrying around cleaning something...I very much appreciated this and this was the only plus. The share volume of people crammed into the camp means there are people EVERYWHERE, there is absolutely no privacy and no where to escape. There’s a very real fish bowl feel. The noise is non stop and music plays from 9am to 10pm every single day ( that we were there )... we ended up leaving early in favour of SLEEP.

Response from Brendan Alborn, Owner at Marahau Beach Camp
Responded 12 Jan 2021
Hi Lisa, I am so sorry you had a terrible stay with us. That's clearly not what we are aiming for! In fact, we're aiming for our guests to have an awesome time! I guess some people like the social aspect of being in a holiday park and some people don't. As a small camp, and at peak season, the camp does get to capacity, but we don't agree with your comments about overcrowding. The sites are almost all large enough for a big Kiwi caravan, a car and often a tent. And while we try to maintain good order in the camp, we don't like to be the fun police by constantly telling people to keep their noise down or to turn their music off if that is happening at reasonable hours. You are quite correct in that the camp is old. In fact, we promote it as a classic Kiwi camping ground. While the electrical system, waste water system, roading, flooring and all other ammenities have been updated over the past few years we have tried to preserve the classic character of the place. But again, this is obviously a matter of personal preference. Some people like to embrace a bit of old school Kiwiana while some people who like everything to be torn down so it can be remade of steel and glass. It seems we have missed the mark in terms of your expectations, and as I said, this is not our aim. Our aim is to provide a fun, relaxed and incredible place for people to enjoy their time with us.

Family of 5, including baby stayed in the cabin. Very happy with the accomodation for the 5 nights we stayed. Check in was based at the main store which in turn was handy for us to get forgotten supplies. Cafe/restaurant is across the road from the campsite. The camp ammenities were very clean, and the wifi was great. Would happily stay here again.

Stayed here a week a go, we liked it that much, we booked to come back a week later. The set up of the backpackers lodge is a little weird, 8 bunks in one room, 5 in another, and there is a double room you have to walk through the dorms to get to. But they are good sized rooms, very clean and sturdy beds. Lounge area, well stocked kitchen with fridge and freezer, dining area inside and out. Brad and Jennie do a really good job of keeping it clean, we saw them in there each day that we were there. Also Jo in the information centre was really helpful and friendly.

The Backpackers here is absolutely awesome - great facilites, clean and warm with toilets and showers inside the facility. What a treat that we got to stay here on our own and OH MY it was such a wonderful space. Everything was supplied we needed for cooking, sleeping and plenty of lounging, dining spaces for everyone. I HIGHLY recommend staying here - great value and awesome facilities with the Abel Tasman Track right at the doorstep.

My wife and I stayed for a night.
A reunion at Hooked on Marahau💥.
We were in the dormitory with a separate lockable room, which was accessed through the "main bunk room." Comfy double bed, and fortunately, only one other guest. All the bells and whistles for a comfortable night.
I can't comment on what it would be like on a full house night tho.🤔🤗

Seriously do not consider if you are camping with a tent! Their allocated space for 8 tents, is barely the size of a postage stamp, cramped between the backpackers accommodation and the site boundary, also adjacent the site main entrance. No consideration for client aesthetics especially the minimal expected privacy even in tents, and charging the normal full price. I could hear the rustle of the person moving in their sleep such was the closeness….not just me either, the conversation in the kitchen was the same….been camping since November in NZ, and this the worst by a mile….tenters avoid!

Nice and small location in Marahau. Located very close to the beach, just have to walk 100m. Good and clean facilities and small playground available. Some sites are bit smaller some bigger but depends on the size of your van as well. We had two good nights up here and can recommend the campsite. Thanks.
