Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We like the small backpackers without a big TV room and only a few beds. Well, The Old Slaughterhouse is definitely one of e most outstanding backpackers fitting into that category. No TV, no internet, no infrastructure - but exactly that makes it a perfect place to unwind and have a rest. Its stunning location far up a steep hill on the west coast with a 180 degree view over the sea is just amazing. We have never met any other backpacker hosts with so much heart and friendlyness. Even the animals (2 big dogs, a cat and a randomly appearing NZ chicken) are so relaxed. Don't miss this spot when you are traveling via Westport - and plan at least 3 days for it! Thank you again, Dave, for your warm welcome!

David, Ina and the dogs are the most welcoming people you can immagine. They share their house with the travellers, take interest in our stories and give great advise on the local area and what to do. David took us fishing and we had a great cook up on the BBQ in the evening. Thanks a lot for a fantastic time and stay.

Off the beaten path and the road with a nice walk in, off the grid with water power, family built and run, splendid facilities with an adorable couple running things. They were the best hosts, plus the dogs are gorgeous! I stared with my parents and one other person- they were extremely accommodating, moving a mattress into a room so we could all share one room which had a wonderful view of the ocean to wake up to. Love, love, love this place!

its some time ago, that we spend a night there, but the view from the balcony is stunning. very unique: you cannot drive up, you need to walk. your stuff is taken up the hill by the family quad bike. The rooms are simple but cosy. It´s german / new zeland owned and you literally live with the family and their dogs. I hope that this place is still the same now! I would like to come back some time

In total I spent 6 months travelling round New Zealand, and never did I find anywhere as beautiful as this little spot. I loved that it is very eco friendly, i loved that there wasn't a TV. David and Ina were friendly and welcoming as were their two dogs. It was possibly the most relaxed i've ever been in my life, sitting on the front decking watching the sun go down over the Tasman, drinking a beer, with Bill Withers playing on their stereo. A stunning peaceful place, a world away from the horrible places filled with morons on travelling on the 'New Zealand Experience' coaches. If you're after a day or two away from everything, with nothing to do but relax, this is where you need to go.

The Old Slaughterhouse is perched on top of the world. Once you arrive, you will hesitate to leave its wraparound deck and sunny kitchen. Sleep with the windows open and listen to the Tasman. You won't want to leave. I didn't.

If you are lucky enough to have time on your side that allows you to travel to Westport please stay in a place called The Old Slaughterhouse. I arrived late as I had mis-timed the travel times from Nelson to Westport (what a drive) and was greeted by the David. He waited patiently as I gathered my nights necessities and grabbed the bags loaded them onto the front of the quad and me onto the back, the funniest trip I have ever been on to get me up to an accommodation. I was greeted by his lovely wife, 3 dogs and cat. I arrived in the dark but I could hear the sea and knew that is was not far away but when I woke up in the morning I walked out onto the veranda and was greeted by such a beautiful sight, sea sea and more sea, just stunning. I had wanted to see the sunset the
