Enjoy an idyllic holiday without the distractions of life’s bustle on one of two spectacular islands. Located 20 minutes from Onslow and only 100km North of Exmouth, a holiday or day trip to the Mackerel Islands provides a wilderness-style experience boasting world–class fishing, diving, snorkelling, swimming, boating, nature watching and relaxation in protected, calm waters. Two of the ten islands – Thevenard Island and Direction Island – offer accommodation and access to an extraordinary experience, where rugged adventure meets isolation at its most splendid. Overlooking the mooring area and swimming bay on Thevenard Island are 13 self–contained, air-conditioned, beachfront cabins (sleeping 2 – 10 people) with all the comforts of everyday living. Your cabin’s shaded outdoor entertaining area is perfect for taking in spectacular sunrises and for watching the local wildlife after a day’s fishing, diving and exploring. A short walk from the beach is Club Thevenard, a 34-room village built around a pool and BBQ area. It offers single or twin rooms complete with ensuite, air-conditioning and all the essentials for up to 50 people. Or, if you’d prefer an island all to yourself, Direction Island may just be the ideal getaway for you. Direction Island accommodation offers a unique and distinctly Western Australian island experience. Located 11 kilometres off WA’s stunning Pilbara coast and nestled within its own coral reef among the spectacular waters of the Mackerel Islands, you can play castaway with up to 8 people on this rustic little island gem. Accessible by charter boat or private vessel, accommodation on Direction Island is a singular, self-contained A-frame beach cabin with simple home comforts that enhance the opportunity to soak up the beauty of untouched nature, reconnect with family and friends, and truly unravel from life’s bustle.

Had the experience of a lifetime with my son on this fabulous lil island. The staff went above and beyond to make our trip one to remember! Cannot express into words what a fantastic team they were from booking through to the stay. The accomodation, the tours, the events and experiences went beyond our expectations! Well done Team Thevenard… we’ll be back!!

What a spot!! Absolutely stunning location with the most amazing staff!! We had our own boats which was great but they do have a few smaller boats for hire on the island. The dinner under the stars was a fab way to start our stay! The staff interacted with their visitors and it added to the relaxed feeling of island life. There is a store on the islands with limited stock so best to pack what you’ll need. The fishing was tough but we’ll definitely be back!!

What an amazing week. Nature put on a show with whales, dolphins, turtles, sea snakes and so many great fish. The house (emporer) was very clean and comfortable for 3 couples. Comfy beds and plenty of hot water and great shower pressure, critical at the end of a big day on the water. Equally important, great aircon. The staff are really helpful. This is our second visit and keen to come came again. Thanks Trent, Sarah and the Mackie island crew.

Accommodation very clean and for where you are completely adequate. In fact the bathroom and toilet areas in better condition than what we witnessed at the Onslow Beach Resort. The only downside was the dinner (which is Friday and Tuesday nights) dip and bread really good but the rest very average. Fish and chicken dishes very dry. Apart from that staff excellent and nothing too much trouble . A place to completely relax. Would certainly recommend a visit.

I found the management rude, rundown the places rundown we had rolling blackouts it seems to be windy and whether blown 80% of the time there when I asked for the shop to open because we needed supplies as I felt the food was second-rate they refuse to open the shop personally I do not recommend anyone bring their family here there are much better places to spend your holidays

Spent three nights here, and it was an unforgettable experience. We are not fisher folk but love to snorkel, and you don't have to fish to have a wonderful time. The cottages are basic but very clean and comfortable with everything you need, and there are hardly any of them, so you feel like you have the island to yourself. The beaches are pristine and deserted, and you can snorkel straight off the beach in front of your cottage on a beautiful reef. On our last day we hired a boat (there were four of us) and we went off and snorkelled on the fringing reef, wherever we liked. Just us and the amazing corals, fish, turtles etc. To top it all off, there were dugongs in the bay at sunset. It was fabulous. Everyone in our group absolutely loved it and we have promised ourselves that we will be back. It is a very special place. Oh, and the team who run the island are lovely and very helpful. Just a great experience all round.…

From the first interaction with Josh, Rach and the team we knew we were in for a good stay. We took our own boat and they were on the beach to greet us and unload. Josh readily assisted in helping us to put the boat on a mooring (newbies to this). Walked with Sarah up to our unit which overlooked the beach and our boat on mooring. Our belongings had been delivered and our alcohol ordered was in the fridge. Throughout the 5 night stay all staff were great. Josh called through one afternoon to give us some advice on where to head for a fish the next day. Sarah suggested the walk around the island to see the turtles. Dinner under the stars on the Tuesday and Friday night was great. Food plentiful and tasty.

We are currently on the lovely Thevenard Island enjoying a gorgeous break from city life. Had not heard of the Mackerel Islands much as a holiday destination- think its another of those well kept WA secret spots We flew to Karratha but you can fly to Onslow or Exmouth- ferry trip over to island where we saw whales. We are having a lovely time- snorkelling, fishing, beach combing. The staff are friendly, there when you go find them but generally leave you to just enjoy the island. Things I wish I had know before I came: You can walk around island but not across due to Chevrons presence. can be very windy in the morning so bring cards The island shop is great but basic- read tins of tuna & corn, no fresh produce Accommodation is very basic but clean & tidy - reminds me of Rotto 20 years ago You cant bring any alcohol to island but can buy here. Things I wish I had brought: uggs for inside sandy cottage Hairdryer; plastic glasses (there are 4 of everything in our cottage as it sleeps 4- some extra cutlery and plates would hv been handy); shell book; more fishing gear as shop limited. Fold out chairs for beach & jetty. Favourite thing to do here: so far squid fishing off jetty at night; dinner under the stars. Just lovely. Will definitely cone back.…
