Let's start with the Staff and by saying they are excellent. Everybody from the Front Desk, the Cleaners, Restaurant Staff, to the Shuttle Drivers were all very friendly and excellent. The Brentwood seems lucky to have such an excellent team propping up what is unfortunately a very dated and run down Hotel.
I have stayed at the Brentwood for work, many times over the years. It's location made it the only logical choice until the Rydges opened up right next to the Airport Terminal. This was my first visit in over 3 years, and I had hoped maybe some improvements had been made to the rooms, especially the bathrooms which were always terribly rundown. I chose the Brentwood this time around as they offer up to a weeks free parking, and a Free Airport Shuttle all included in the room price, which at $179.00 was still a little steep, but I hoped that meant maybe the rooms had been spruced up.
I arrived around 3pm and was Checked In and given extremely good directions to my room, where to park, how the Airport Shuttle worked, Restaurant Hours ect. A good start for sure. I drove around and found a Car Park directly outside my Room, which meant I was able to lug the suitcases inside really easily.
Room was exactly the same as how they looked 10 years ago, apart from maybe a change of bedspread. Bathroom was horribly dated, and rather dirty, with hair and mold everywhere. Shower was appalling, with just a dribble of pressure, and needing to constantly adjust as it was too hot or too cold.
It must be said, the bed was extremely comfortable, and despite some banging around in the next room early on in the night, there was not a lot of noise disrupting my sleep. The Restaurant was also excellent, with good quality meals at really decent prices.
Brentwood does well on its Sleep Quality, it's Staff, the Restaurant, and also it's Airport Parking/Shuttle offer. Unfortunately it is way behind in every other area. The rooms need attention, especially the bathroom with those horrid showers. Cleanliness needs to be improved, and also some general maintenance ect.. with broken handles ect. At $179.00 for the night, I thought this was too overpriced considering a far superior Hotel in the city, once taking into account the Hotel Parking and Parking at the Airport, actually came out to be cheaper then the Brentwood.
The place is crying out for some money to be spent on it, and it's location is perfect, there is plenty of room and scope to make this a brilliant, desirable and trendy place to stay.
I cannot say I would return at that Price Point. If it were cheaper I may consider, given I slept well and the Staff were excellent.
Rooms are very dated, as is the main areas
Not worth the money to stay, should be about 1/2 price that you pay.
More inline with a budget Hotel
Although the hotel is a little dated it is very clean, had both internal and external access from the room which was perfect with having dogs.
They offered a room service breakfast that was a decent size and had all the trimmings (and I've eaten a few breakfasts!).
As a frequent business traveler its proximity to the airport is ideal and easy drive to the ferry (when it actually departs!) Any dog owner knows it can be challenging finding a decent place to say so this was an awesome find.
It is absolutely not a modern hotel so if that is what you are looking for, you better head into the city and pay city prices.
The Brentwood is older but comfortable and my room was very clean and well equipped.
The ease of parking right outside my door was a bonus and even though it appeared that the property was full during my time there, I did not find it noisy in the slightest.
The price I paid for 2 nights was very reasonable, the front desk service was excellent and attentive.
I would certainly stay again next time I am in Wellington.
To top it off, as my family were departing, the day staff yelled across the lobby while people were gathering announcing "your transaction was declined" Embarrassed and stunned again my family had to ring support people to help resolve the issue, which in fact ended up being miscommunication on their part. , They were rude and unhelpful. I had asked about free airport transfer and they said no, and now reading others reviews, I see it is a service they offer, obviously to their bias. Extremely disappointed.
The decor is worn and the beds aren’t great, wooden framed windows make it very noisy especially when Wellington weather wants to put on a show.
The saving grace is the restaurant, breakfast is average but dinner was a surprise, well presented meals, bursting with flavour and decent portion sizes to match. If you stay here and feel underwhelmed, head to the restaurant and have a kai
The halls to the rooms smell of mould and rising damp, the mattresses are bowed in the middle, and a chain lock is the only door lock in your room.
Our room didn't have heating, cooling, or a bathroom fan. Decor is from the 70's or 80's with zero upkeep so it's pretty tired and dated. No charming vintage or retro vibes unfortunately.
Lastly, there was a spider nest in the grapes we had on our plate at breakfast and the cooked buffet breakfast was rubbish.
Here's the saving graces and the reason the place gets 2 stars instead of none:
Staff are lovely and friendly.
The hotel has a free shuttle on demand for guests to and from airport.
Chargeback option to room for drinks and food convenient.
Luggage storage secure.
Pool onsite handy for hot days.
For the price this hotel charges for food, drink, and accommodation you should def stay elsewhere.
