Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great camping spot ! DOC campsite on the lake. They have a place to cook (with your own stove), a place to wash dishes, and picnic tables at some of the sites. They only have portapotties available as toilets but they are clean. It’s a bit of a free for all, set up camp wherever but make sure to register online first ! No service at the campsite, but the beach is great and there are a few hikes you can do that start right in the area !

The road to the campground is a challenge with cows blocking your way sometimes. It was dry when we were here but the road might be even more of a challenge when it is raining. The campsite is lovely and the views over the lake are stunning. We walked along the lake and the meadows with sheep, saw an awesome full moon and absolutely loved it !

We booked a spot but on arrival the sign to the dirt road said "not suitable for large campervans"! We called the DOC station but no one was present after 5pm and the assistance service was not manned either. We didn't dare to take the risk so went freedom camping instead. The DOC website didn't mention anything about being not suitable for large campervans so we definitely will try to get our money back.

What a place! The mountains, the view just perfect. $8 per adult & that inc proper flushing toilet, BBQ area & fish prep area. We camped right in lakes edge. Great families around us. Thoroughly recommend

What could be better for 6 Dollars? Not the easiest place to find. But it's worth to seek after. Amazing campsite without showers. But no one cares about. Because there is an amazing, marvellous landscape and a wonderful lake. Simply and safely. Stargazers welcome!

Staying here was one of the worst camping experiences we had during a multi-month trip around NZ.

The location itself seemed nice from afar, as we approached. We arrived as it was starting to get dark and upon pulling into the campground, we discovered tons of campers! There were so many people and tents and camper vans that we couldn't hardly find a place to spend the night. We ended up just finding a spot to just pull the car up between a number of other vehicles and didn't even bother trying to find a place to pitch the tent; we slept in the car. Many of the campers looked like they were prepared to spend days, weeks, or even months here.

Needless to say, the crowds ruined the experience for us and we blasted out of there at first light the next morning.

This place is stunning, a perfect place to stop for a few nights. Very picturesque and quiet, the lake is lovely to swim in and there are plenty of flat spaces to camp.
Another magnificent DOC site, a perfect stopover in the way to wanaka or queenstown

Utterly wonderful and remote DoC site with pitches directly overlooking Lake Hawea and providing wonderful views morning and evening.
Good, clean flush toilets and water supply.
Long, well-maintained gravel road to get to the site.

This is a most amazing DOC site and certainly worth the long drive along the narrow single track road to reach it. Just $20 for a night in this beautiful place on the banks of Lake Hawea. It really is a hidden gem. There is a pleasant 1km loop walk in the forest behind too. There are cows and sheep along the way who sometimes block the road but they are easily moved.
