We booked a spot but on arrival the sign to the dirt road said "not suitable for large campervans"! We called the DOC station but no one was present after 5pm and the assistance service was not manned either. We didn't dare to take the risk so went freedom camping instead. The DOC website didn't mention anything about being not suitable for large campervans so we definitely will try to get our money back.
Great spot for an overnight or two in a motorhome. We have stayed here a coupel of times on different trips with family in multiple motorhomes. This place has spectacular views, is just off the main road and access to the lake is very easy. Thanks to the DOC staff that keep the toilets so clean.
Helpful to have a DOC pass but not hard to get. Makes for a cheap nightly stay. Dress for the weather as can be changeable. Getting colder at night but beautiful days with sun. Lovely bird sounds in the morning.
Don't even think about it. Horrible. For a camp that needs to pay exclusively, the camp site has no parking system. It was super CROWDED. SANDFLIES and insects everywhere. We parked for a bit, but then immediately changed camping place. It's the worst experience our family encountered during our trip.
This is my first freedom campsite when i was in nz south island. Stayed a night here in end Oct 2018. This place is beutiful and worth staying. The toilets are clean and there are 3 of them. Worth staying and highly recommended.
