Detailed Reviews
Recently stayed for a week in a dog friendly caravan which was modern, clean and spacious. Site is in a great location for exploring the area, there are some amazing beaches close by. Pool was disappointing, quite small and changing rooms need updating. Shop was expensive but there is an Asda just a couple of mins away. Can’t comment on the entertainment as we had our dog which aren’t allowed in that area (which I understand). We visited the restaurant once to eat (food average, bit over priced) and a few times just for a drink - we sat anywhere in the restaurant with our dog during our visits, however, on our last night we were asked to move as we were not at a dog friendly table and were told we must sit at either table 1 or 2 as these were the ONLY dog friendly tables! We were not aware of this. We really felt unwelcome at this point, we moved but table 1 was occupied and table 2 was a small table for 2 (there were 4 of us). The sign on the table read “dogs welcome until 8pm” - it was 7.55pm at that point so we necked our drinks and left - not happy. If you want to eat or drink here with your dog and can’t get either table then you would have to sit outside with the smokers, vapours and midges. There is another bar which we were told we could go sit in but it’s not the best and the Chlorine smell is overpowering as the room is next to the pool. This was so disappointing for us, if our dog isn’t made to feel welcome then we are not welcome - 2 tables out of the whole restaurant's is no where near enough, and only until 8pm?? I doubt we will return.

We are frequent visitors to Thurston Manor with our touring caravan and enjoy it very much,it's a great place to meet up with friends.
I have never written a review for here before so here goes: touring facilities are spotless, pitches are too although some can be tight as we found out this last weekend we were there. We were guided in by Robert the warden but our neighbours were not happy, apparently they didn't have enough room. I spoke to Robert who promptly sorted out the situation which we were most grateful for.
Our son uses the pool which he says is good (a sauna & steam room included)
The bar prices were astronomical a few months ago but are now average (which goes to show they have listened to customer feedback)
We only wish there were some dog friendly areas in the bar, it's lovely sitting outside on the terrace with the dogs but not so great in the cold.
We have stayed plenty of times in the past when there have been travellers also staying in the touring park but they have never bothered us in any way.
Overall Thurston is a good site,it has all you need & there are some lovely local beauty spots to visit too.

We stayed at Thurston Manor over the Easter Weekend. The staff in reception were welcoming and we stayed in the Walled Garden area which was nice and quiet and the caravan was clean and had everything we needed. The welcome pack of teas, coffee and milk was a nice touch.
Now for the not so good parts……
We booked to go the pool - you need to call up and book a slot, they are for 1 hour. When we got to the pool the steam room and jacuzzi weren’t working, it might be worth the staff mentioning this when you book as we were looking forward to using these facilities. The pool changing rooms could do with updating and there wasn’t enough cubicles to accommodate everyone. There is a leisure pool at Dunbar a 10 minute drive away with water slides so worth the drive.

Disappointing to say the least. We have stayed on the site before and had no issues but this time (and the last time we stay) has been more than disappointing. We arrived to the most basic lodge, nothing like the pictures. No kitchen roll, hand soaps, the smallest amount of washing up liquid, no dishwasher tablets for the dishwasher, no cushions on sofas, not a lot of cooking utensils or pans, french doors didn’t lock properly, one radiator in front room didn’t work at all the other half worked (cold at bottom, hot at top), rips in towels, numerous tie backs hanging out the wall for curtains. The lodge hadnt been cleaned properly, stains on sofas, dusty towel rails, hairs in shower and the bath, carpets not hoovered great, marks down kitchen cupboards, crumbs in drawers, marks on windows, dead flies on windowsill, sofas underneath hadn’t seen a hoover in some time! We didn’t arrive till after 6pm, by the time we unpacked had some tea and then went for showers we then realised there was no hot water, water would get warm for about 20 seconds and that’s it, got in touch with maintenance next day, to be told that it was something that needed changing on the bath (doesn’t explain the no hot water in the en-suite and kitchen) he said there had been 40 caravans with burst pipes the week before due to the cold weather (clearly hadn’t checked the rest that were due to be booked out the following week) we were understanding with it being the weekend they could struggle to get the part, Monday came and no updates, rung reception on Tuesday to be told someone would be sent down( the lady on the phone didnt seem interested one bit), waited all week and no one showed, we had to boil the kettle every night to get our 2 year olds bath temperature to where it should be, (tap made the bath 20 degrees & it needs to be 36) as the week went on the water got colder. ( we couldn’t wait for our cold showers every night NOT!). we ended up cutting our holiday short as we felt the park let us down by not being interested in sorting the issues out, they already had our £500+ from what we paid so why would they. we run our own holiday let cleaning business and we know the standards, this site completely let us down, we would never let our guests experience what we have.

Had a lovely relaxing holiday at Thurston Manor. We were a large family, one in a deluxe caravan which was spotless, with a veranda, 2 bedrooms, en suite, main shower room, full sized fridge /freezer, full sized cooker/oven, top of range microwave etc. My Daughter stayed in a large 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom lodge with a large kitchen complete with washer /drier and a dishwasher, large lounge/ dining area and huge deck area outside.
The staff were lovely, from the barman to the pool lifeguards. The entertainment team went above and beyond to keep the Grandchildren busy - they were bloody brilliant and so nice.
Yes the holiday park is quiet, and very hilly, but is so picturesque, with wild deer, rabbits and pheasants roaming around.
I have been to many holiday parks over the years and would recommend this one if you want a relaxing holiday with entertainment and leisure facilities thrown in.
Thank you for a great holiday - hope to see you again soon

We visited over Easter in a tourer. ALL the fresh food in the shop was litterally rotting and mouldy, carrots were black and soaked in the cardboard shelf, potatoes had eyes and some even had begun to root.
Entertainments area was lovely and the staff in there were absolutely amazing with the kids. The range of activities is good.
However there were no reasonable adjustments for Autistic people, no aids or quiet sensory spaces available, no ear defenders to help kids to be able to enage in avtivities where the music was loud and the lights were flashing.
There was some kind of committee meeting happening in the big room during the kids activity sessions where the attendees were aggressive and raised their voices along with use of bad language. Not appropriate and frightened the kids.
We did drive to town to replace the ear defenders that we had but really disability support should be available on site inline with the disability and equality acts. Not all disabilities are visible after all.
There was only cold water in the shower blocks. When we reported this the older women at reception was incredibly rude. The toilet block closest to our pitch in garden area was closed for repair and STILL is (May 2024)
Its a beautiful place but lots of work to be done. We met 4 members of staff that were helpful the rest could do with some training. Stock rotation/Sell by and use by dates needs to be looked at and making the site and activities fully accessible and inclusive for ALL is a big MUST for Thurston Manor.

In general, OK if your basic hospitality expectations are very minimal. Staff, on the whole appear disinterested and unhappy to be working there. Training leaves a lot to be desired - don't expect much and you'll be fine. Anything out of the ordinary is a huge ask (in our case, a simple checking in delay that anywhere else would have been able to facilitate with the lowest of base customer care) so aim to have as little to do with the staff is advisable. A general sense of odd-ness prevails, such as some facilities on their timetable being inaccurate - an example is don't pay much attention to shop opening/closing times as they don't appear to relate to actuality in our case. Caravan cleanliness is, again odd. Everything - floors, dishes, cutlery was soaking wet. A sense of wet dog smell hangs in the air. On the plus side, the caravan was not too dirty. If you are stuck for somewhere to go then it's not the worst place in the world, and it is well located. Keep yourself to yourself, try not to interact with staff (or expect much from them), don't relay on any facilities offered, bring your own food and it will be a near average stay if off-season. Probably nowhere near worth going if in peak season

We have just returned from a weekend at Thurston manor. The site itself is really lovely. Our caravan was a bit tired - door frame not sealed properly/ part of it coming away, bathroom door not shutting properly, towel rail fallen off, blinds in kitchen broken. However we still had a great time and wouldn't put us off going back! We fed all these issues back to the reception and they took our feedback on board.
The nisa on site was very expensive and not the best selection of items - but there's an Asda a Short drive away so this wasn't an issue.
The restaurant was nice, the food and drink was nice and not too overpriced. The manager in the restaurant (Graham I think his name was) was really helpful and couldn't do enough for you! He took our concerns about 2 of our children's allergies very seriously and removed peanuts from the premises for the duration of our stay. Also a shout out to Ryan he was really friendly and great with the kids in the shop when the kids were spending their ticket winnings.
Entertainment was excellent and the team was great with all of our chilsren. Plenty of free and payable activities. The evening disco etc was great also.
We didn't end up using the pool but it looked nice when we popped in - small but perfect for families!
Overall I'd really recommend this site to anyone. We had a great time and will definitely be back!

As soon as we arrived, we seen a big bit of rawhide beside the caravan which we asked to be removed and it wasn’t. We have a 1 year old and a dog. The caravan inside was dirty, the accommodation manager did come up quickly to see this however it was hoovered and that was it. We were told the caravan hadn’t been booked in at the office to be cleaned for us arriving. No basic amenities such as washing up liquid, hand wash, kitchen roll. For the price I would have expected this at least. There is a horrible musty smell throughout the caravan. No cushions or anything, very very basic. Been totally out off but spent £400 to be here for the week so we’re stuck.
We were given £40 in vouchers for the restaurant after I went to complain about the dirt on the floor, was told cleaner will come up tomorrow to clean the caravan but it will need to be sparkling!

We googled dog friendly accomodation in or near Dunbar and when Thurston came up it looked great and an ideal place to spend a week while we visited family .
Dog friendly is a bit of a stretch to say the least .
Dogs are not allowed off lead while on the park and they are not allowed in any of the facilities.
There is a seating area outside where you can order food and drink but there is no shelter or wind break so your food is cold before you get a chance to eat it .
There was a dried up rusty water dish where supposedly your dog could have a drink !
If you are looking for dog friendly avoid Thurston unless of course you don't mind going off site to exercise your dog and have your meals .
Deluxe Caravan was OK at best. Wish I had brought my own bedding as duvet barely fitted the bed my husband I spent the night pulling it back and forth It took 3 days to get WiFi working and TV signal was rubbish I presume down to it being windy .
OK as a base but don't expect the luxury you see advertised online.
To be fare we did not use any of facilities so shouldnt really comment on them, but I have to say there doesn't look to be near enough to accommodate the amount off caravans on site if they are ever fully booked!
