Detailed Reviews
We have stayed at several B&B's and this is definitely at the top.
Not only is the place really nice, our room was large, warm, had a beautiful view and the best bathroom we have ever experienced at a B&B.
But even all this does not reach the owners to size!
It is rare to meet so service-minded people.
We felt immediately welcome and at home.
We were served delicious breakfast when it suited us.
We got plenty of help to where we could find restaurents
and where we could explore the area's beautiful scenery.
When we came back after a nice hike with quite dirty pants and socks
we were even asked if we wanted them washed!
Most impressive, however, was that they offered to bring and pick us up at the wedding we were attending nearby so that we didn't have to pay for a taxi.
An offer we happily accepted!
But the surprises did not end there. As we sat in our room and relaxed late on our last evening they came up with a bottle of wine for us. We should not sit without anything to drink.
We were incredibly happy to stay there and was fortunate to meet so sweet and nice people. Thank you for a very pleasant stay and for many fun and interesting conversations!

One look at the beautiful sea view from our lovely bedroom was enough to convince us we had made a good choice. Add to this the comfy bed, well appointed ensuite and the relaxed and friendly hosts and we were set to have a perfect weekend.
We loved the relaxing walk on the beach before getting ready for the wedding we were attending at nearby Dunglass Estate.
We had a very satisfying breakfast (newly laid eggs) in the country kitchen enjoying Linda and Peter's chat. It felt like we were old friends not just guests. We were offered lifts to and from the wedding venue and Peter very kindly offered to take some photos of us in our wedding regalia.
Thanks for making our weekend so special and for the tip off about Cove.

Chose Thorntonloch House as a convenient location for the Scottish Open Golf Tournament, and also because of the many favourable reviews on Tripadvisor.
We were warmly welcomed, but informed that as they were at full capacity with contractors working locally, the lounge was out of action as the guys who had been in our room had been moved there to sleep. Also, the dining room was not available as it was being re decorated.
We were shown to our room which was clean and pleasant, however, there was no soap or shampoo in the bathroom.(The following day this was provided) Fresh milk for early morning tea was provided for the first morning, but did not subsequently reappear.
Breakfast for the first two mornings was brilliant, with just about anything available, but by the third morning there were only eggs available.
Although Linda and Peter are great people, we think they are more interested in providing a hostel for guys working locally, than being a genuine tourist B & B

Thank you for your review, You booked your two double rooms eight weeks ago. A confirmation email was sent and I received no further response. i.e. Deposit, Telephone number or any details except an email address. your next and only communication was the day before your arrival. I had however catered for your POSSIBLE arrival!!! You had booked 2 double rooms and were given 2 Family Rooms <upgrade> your party used all four double beds at no extra cost. The soap ? On the website it clearly states, that I do not provide toiletries as the plastic bottles are not environmentally friendly, however you were given soap on REQUEST..... Not the next day! It also stated on the website and in some of the Trip Advisor reviews, which you obviously read, that breakfast is served in the "Farmhouse Kitchen." The dining room is for evening meals which you did not book therefore you would not have required to access. The sitting room is private. There is a sofa and table and chairs in your own very large room. The breakfast? Your wife informed me the evening before you departed that you would like poached eggs on toast therefore I did not cook a full breakfast for you. You also failed to inform me of special dietary requirements until your arrival. You did also receive a large reduction on your three night stay. As for being a HOSTEL!!!!!!!!! This is a business and it would not be in my interest to wait about for .a " Genuine Tourist" of your type, to confirm and pay for bookings just in case they chose to arrive. I would also suggest that it is inappropriate for you to comment on my clients. whom may or may not be " Genuine Tourist?" I had an option to turn you away at the door for non payment of deposit but chose not to implement this and ruin your trip! It was after all the Scottish Open Golf week, the whole area was very much over subscribed.

Everything started great. It had a beautiful view right on the ocean, finished bathroom and a nice big bed. As we were getting ready for bed we started noticing spiders on the walls, ceilings and in the curtains. When we closed the curtains a few more came out as well as the mama spider, AKA the biggest spider we've ever seen in our lives! It was the size of a persons palm. We figured out after that the smaller ones were just its babies. Where the nest was, we don't know. We went downstairs to try and get a hold of the owners and explain to them the situation but we couldn't get a hold of them. We knocked on doors, looked around and called out for help...NOTHING. We had to search for the phone and call her cellphone to finally get a hold of her. When we explained the problem to her, she belittled us and looked at us like we were three years old. We called for a cab and when it came she stuck her head in the passenger-side door and openly mocked us. Very poor customer service and hospitality in our opinion, therefore, we wouldn't reccomend this B&B to anyone, unless you like sleeping with spiders.

Its a pity that they didn't mention being picked up from the railway station (6 miles away) for free, having a 2 course meal and that they didn't waken any of the other guests when they were looking for me! nor that they left at 1.30 in the morning having not paid.

Thank you so much Linda & peter for such a warming & peaceful stay... I arrived by train from edinburgh where Linda kindly picked me up & invited me into this beautifully restored house.. My room was cosy/spotless & had a bath which was super big with a super comfy bed!! Linda & peter welcomed me as a solo guest to eat dinner & breakfast with them... They are very interesting/knowledgeable folks with kind hearts ...Really enjoyed our chats...dinner & breakfast was heart warming &tasty .... Linda & peter also told me about the cove nearby which I must go back to explore.. The area is great for walking & photography with a short walk onto the john Muir path...Top rated b&b which I'd recommend without doubt... Hope to see you both again in october to catch those sunset/sunrises you spoke of:-)

Stayed here for 3 nights whilst celebrating our friends wedding and felt right at home! A beautiful house with lovely rooms and the best cooked breakfast (made to order) each morning. As we had booked out all the rooms and there were no other guests, we were encouraged to treat the place as our own. An amazing B&B-would definitely recommend to everyone. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Couldn't agree more with 'DonkScotland'. A great place to stay, beautiful old house, sensitively restored and with one of the best en suite showers ever (didn't test the spa bath!). Wonderfully welcoming hosts who couldn't do enough for you (even gave me lifts in to Dunbar when I was stuck). As a solo traveller it is so lovely to have a host who is happy to sit and chat over a relaxed cup of coffee - just made my stay for me. The place had been highly recommended to me and it was even better than my expectations. Couldn't have asked for more.

I had a long drive from Skye to Dunbar and called Thorntonloch to see if it would be OK to drop off s golf bag and a suitcase there. I had to return my rental car to Glasgow Airport so I wanted to unload this stuff and then drive back to Glasgow. So I gave them a call and talked to Peter who told me they were doing a dinner party and would be up if I arrived late. So I arrived in the evening while the dinner party was going on, only to be invited to sit in the kitchen and fed! Linda cooked up a lovely dinner and fed me just what the guests were getting. I left a couple of hours later, refreshed, fed and happy. The next day when I returned, it was more of the same - like you are staying with family and not just a business sleeping arrangement. Filling breakfast in the kitchen, lots of chatter and jokes, Peter giving us buiscuts for our golf outing, great rooms. What more to asking for? Nothing at all. I've stayed at many fine Bed and breakfasts but Thorntonloch is a one of a kind and that kind is absolutely perfect.

Everything about Thorntonloch House is LARGE - the rooms, the breakfasts and above all the welcome. This is a genuinely warm and friendly place and we very much enjoyed our brief stay here. As a place to stay one night to break a journey or a base for a slightly longer stay it is hard to fault and hard to beat, and Linda is the perfect landlady/host.
