My friend and I have just visited for a 3 night winter break. Cost £217 each dinner bed and breakfast. The hotel was warm in the very cold snowy weather. Manageable walk into the shopping area of the city. The Inn was nicely decorated and clean. The rooms were welcoming. We had twin room 8 upstairs at the back. It was reasonably quiet, warm and comfortable. Some noise from delivery vehicles in the morning. The shower worked well. There is no shelving in the bathroom whatsoever so if a lady with lots of toiletries it is a slight annoyance. The lighting in the room was dire, the lights should be much brighter. Food was good although cooking varied from chef to chef, plenty of variety and a lovely choice for dinner or breakfast. The staff were friendly and helpful. Particular thanks to Alex Clark and Tom at the bar who went out of their way to help us two elderly ladies. The weather during our stay was horrid, but the staff at The King's Lodge were the sunshine!

Stayed for 2 nights mid-week break and opted for the Winter Warmer package. Hotel is in a lovely spot 10 min walk from centre of Durham, we had a front facing room and it was lovely and quiet. Bed really comfy, slight problem with shower but this was rectified on the second day after we informed reception. Room was fairly compact but we don't go away to sit in our room so didn't bother us at all. Breakfast was spot on, order from menu for hot food and continental all laid out to help yourself. Evening meal was average pub food, nothing spectacular but OK (apart from the Retro Nut Tart pudding - this was basically crunchy nut cornflakes covered in caramel on top of a pastry base that was welded to a pie dish, very odd and would not recommend). All the staff were very welcoming and attentive - maybe some of those moaning in reviews should crack a smile themselves once in a while and make the effort to be polite to the staff. For what we paid we couldn't fault the Kingslodge, we only wish we'd have taken our Cocker Spaniel as we've never stayed in such a dog friendly place before and we felt guilty that we'd left him at home!

Room 15 obviously is above kitchens resulting in constant noise from radio and staff from 7am-10pm. Complained about noise, girl on reception acted surprised .. should’ve read reviews as it’s a common complaint going back over 2 years but they obviously haven’t bothered to rectify the problem. Breakfast portions were small and a lot of the food barely warm. Rooms are poky and the shower cubicle size is a joke! At nearly £400 for 3 nights it’s a complete and utter rip-off. Still awaiting the email we were promised when our complaint had been looked in to!!

Just returned from 3 nights at The Kingslodge. Great location with about 10 minute walk into the heart of the action, then back to this quiet retreat. Staff are superb, friendly and efficient with lots of advice on places to visit. Room was comfortable and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean. Food was of a good pub standard and had a selection of game dishes available which were very tasty.
