Great place to stay, room was clean, plenty of space with all facilities you would expect from a quality B&B. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much of a problem and made us feel really welcome in fact went over and above what I would expect and found from many stays at B&B's over many years. The walk to and from Durham City centre was just a nice pleasant stroll around 10-15 minutes. Would definitely recommend and will will be our choice on our next visit to Durham

Chose to stay at the Garden House Inn for 2 nights during a family holiday to Durham (2 adults + a 14 year old). We would usually go for a premier inn or travelodge purely for convenience but decided to give this place a try, and so glad we did. It's a quirky characterful building, with a really lovely bar area and conservatory. The outside space is small but nice with flowers and umbrellas etc. The room we had (4) was huge, with 2 big double beds- and decorated in an eclectic style which I really liked- well in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Yes the bathroom wasnt the most modern, and the shower could have been better but it was big and clean. We didnt eat there but the range of drinks was ok- no real ales back yet but this was as expected as they have just come back from lockdown. The staff were exceptional, Demi in particular, really friendly and welcoming. The walk into town is absolutely fine, a gentle slope back and ideal for walking off a big dinner. Despite being quite close to a road, our room was very quiet. All in all a great experience and hope they go from strength to strength as they recover from the last 18 months. If a modern bathroom and powerful shower is all that is important then maybe not the place for you. If you like olde worlde character and quirky charm, and a relaxed vibe, give it a go. My daughter loved it- and we all know how difficult it is to impress teenagers!

We stayed at The Garden House for a single night while visiting our son at University in Durham. We have another 2 years of visits ahead of us, so we will be trying several hotels to fit our budget. It's safe to say we won't be going back to the Garden House. The B&B is located a stiff uphill walk outside Durham City centre. The hill looks a little daunting, but actually was a reasonably easy walk from town. The B&B is located in a pub, which seems to have a thriving Pizza restaurant. We didn't try this. Parking is advertised at the hotel but is extremely limited as they have used much of the car park for outside seating. Two cars and it's full! On-street parking is available but is chargeable. There is no reception in the B&B, you go to the bar. The staff are friendly, but no one was wearing any face masks at all. This is odd because the B&B are clearly aware of the COVID situation as they used this as the reason for not being able to provide Breakfast. The room we had was superficially clean, with clean linen. But it is VERY tired, with many fittings cracked or broken. Door handles and chest of drawers were very grimy. The room had a very bad smell, which was a mixture of bleach and stale tobacco smoke. The bathroom was the biggest letdown. Again it was superficially clean, but although there had once been a shower over the bath, this has been removed and simply blanked off. The bath is old and cracked, with the enamal missing in places. The toilet brush is disgusting. There were only basic toiletries provided. The bed was rock hard and creaked alarmingly. The duvet and pillows were very old and thin. There was no sign of mattress or pillow protectors. I wanted to raise my concerns the following day on check out, but the only person around was a cleaner who asked us to leave our key. Overall this is a very poor place to stay. This was our second stay in Durham. Previously we had stayed at the Kingslodge which was much better in every way.

My friends and I visited The Garden House yesterday for drinks after work and the girl working could not have been more helpful she is a real asset to this business. Initially we had reserved a table inside but due to the sun shining we moved outside. Nothing was a trouble for the girl who provided cushions for the chairs and brought our drinks out. Throughout our stay she checked in with us to make sure we were ok and if we needed anything further. We will definitely be going back especially after I saw the pizzas being delivered to another table - they looked fab! If you are in and around Durham this is definitely worth a visit.
