Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Hotel and the room were clean and comfortable. Excellent food which you can enjoy in the bar or the restaurant ....and all the staff are most friendly. Booking on-line was easy. Nice to have plenty of parking too. Easy base too, to be able to walk into Bideford.

We went to the hotel for a reunion, having been several times before. The bedroom was somewhat tired and the shower erratic, cold or scalding. This aside the stay was great, staff friendly and helpful throughout the weekend. I am celiac and they catered so well for me, I was given a gluten free choice of most dishes and had a selection of desserts at each meal. Thank you to the restaurant staff who looked after us so well.

Went Feb 2024 with my husband and our pug dog. The room was clean and comfortable. The pug was catered for as well. It was a "dog" room that the Durrant caters for. It's the first time we have been there. We would definitely return. The staff were all helpful and cheerful. The food was really well priced and very good. Also, the drinks were reasonably priced, which is rare these days. Would like to try summer as there is a swimming pool out the back. Thank you staff for making our visit so enjoyable. Xx

Well we found this to be a lovely hotel with friendly and hard working staff. The meals were good. always hot but sometimes not enough , the breakfast being the worse. There is always a but and ours was that the bedding was not too good with some stains on the sheet and cover etc, but the room overall was good.

I bought a £50 voucher for a Swedish massage for my daughter’s birthday. . She has cp and special needs. I unfortunately mislaid it and went in to the Durrant Hotel to ask for help. The Manager was unsympathetic, rude and uncompromising and refused to find a way to enable my daughter to get her massage. I therefore lost £50 and poor Sarah gets no massage. When I said that it was disgusting her words were ‘No you’re disgusting’. Some Manager. Needless to say I would NEVER recommend this hotel to ANYONE with a manager like that

This really is an attack of personality on a public forum. We have reported this review and did review the CCTV straight away following the upset caused to our staff member after your visit to the hotel. I would like to point out firstly that there is CCTV in the Reception area of the hotel with sound recording which has been viewed. You made it known that the voucher you purchased the week before was at home and is not lost. However, you wanted the paper voucher replaced there and then, which was not possible, as per the terms and conditions we couldn’t replace the voucher for you that was mislaid at home as per our policy, as we have no way of cancelling the old one. Our staff member tried to sympathise with you and suggested you try to look for the voucher, and apologised we cannot replace this. You continuously threatened that you would be writing a review and putting this on Facebook, as we were not replacing the voucher you had mislaid at home and accused us of theft of your money. The voucher as you advised, is at your house. Our vouchers are paper vouchers and can be redeemed in the R&R Spa for treatments or Durrant House hotel, at reception, in the Bar or in the restaurant with any members of staff. As we aren’t on an electronic system with our vouchers we cannot ‘cancel’ them as such and misplaced vouchers could be used after new vouchers are given in their place, Therefor this is not something we are able to do, even if this were not our policy. Our terms and conditions are clear on our advertisement and website and given in written form with all vouchers sold. Vouchers are sold with a 6 month expiry on them, we do hope that they find the voucher they have misplaced and are able to come in and utilise this in the R&R Spa. Below is a copy of the terms and conditions you would have received with the voucher, been advised of at booking and can see on our website/advertisement – USEFUL INFORMATION, TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. You can pay via voucher directly in person at the hotel. 2. Vouchers are valid for 6 months from date of purchase. 3. No change will be given if voucher not redeemed in full. 4. The gift voucher expiration date will be stated on the front of your voucher. 5. Vouchers cannot be used for any goods or services after the date on the front of your voucher. There will be no exceptions to this. 6. You cannot pre-book appointments or restaurant bookings beyond the expiry date. 7. Vouchers cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash or other denominated vouchers. 8. Vouchers cannot be replaced if lost, stolen or destroyed. 9. This voucher can be redeemed at The Durrant House Hotel, against food, drink, and accommodation, or at The R&R Spa. 10. If voucher is not presented in person at time of booking, full payment will be taken for spa appointments. 11. For spa bookings made and pre-paid on the phone, vouchers will be refunded when presented in person at the front desk. We do not tolerate verbal abuse to our staff who are following our policies and doing their jobs and our staff should not have to endure this. The way you spoke to our staff member when you visited the hotel was unacceptable, raising your voice for the duration of the conversation and becoming irate, pointing at our staff member across the desk and telling them that "they are disgusting" when trying to assist you and doing their job. To write this review is unacceptable and unfair following this and we hope this is removed after being reported.

The hotel was a little dated but has lot of character. The bedrooms were newly refurbished by the look of them. My main gripe is that when I asked for Yoghurt to go with the Prunes and grapefruit segment that were on offer I was informed that I had to buy my own. I want to particularly mention Millie on reception, it was her first day on reception and she was quite nervous but very polite and friendly and I would like to mention Steven the waiter who did all he could to make our stay memorable and nothing was too much trouble for him. The singer on the first night was brilliant and some including us got up dancing his name was Terry Bundy. The second night a lady sang but unfortunately she didn't keep many people after 8.30 and finished at 9pm. There is a bus stop directly outside to go to various places including Bideford, Barnstaple and Westward Ho! Some rooms were closed due to it being the winter period as was the hotel pool. We had 2 beds in our room one being a double and that was more comfortable than the single. I would also like to mention that we couldn't order a starter and orange squash as that was not allowed which I thought was pretty mean as orange squash is very cheap to buy.

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at The Durrant Hotel Spa. It definately wasn't a spa experience. . I felt the whole process was impersonal and lacked any enthusiasm or care. When I arrived, there was no one to greet me, when the member of staff appeared, I was asked to fill in a form which wasn’t even looked at. Nothing was explained and then I was taken by the same member of staff to an overheated room for my massage. She didn’t introduce herself or explain she would be doing the massage, there was no checking if the temperature was ok, if the pressure she was using was ok, if I was comfortable, if I had any problems with my back. The whole experience was very impersonal. The massage was more of a back rub using copious amounts of oil. After the massage, there was no discussion about how I felt. I was just told to get dressed. When I went to the reception desk down stairs, the receptionist didn’t even ask if I’d had a good massage. I emailed the hotel with my feedback 3 weeks ago and never received a response. I would definitely not recommend this spa as what should have been a relaxing treat was completely the opposite.

Great roast dinner , I’ve had it 3 times now when visiting the area. Served all day , the staff are friendly , the vegetable selection is extensive and cooked perfectly , puddings also are delicious … the restaurant area is decadent we sat in a booth on a couple of occasions and once in the bar when we had our dog with us. Highly recommend… enjoy
