Detailed Reviews
Came here for a wedding.
The house, which used to be a school, is beautiful.
After the wedding, drinks and canapés were served in the Orangery leading out to the garden. Canapés we’re lovely.
After photos we went in for our sit down meal, which was delicious. The chef catered well for people with food allergies. I’m a Coeliac and I had Gf gnocchi for starters, pork belly for mains and cheesecake for dessert.
Disco was held in the evening, when more tasty food was served.
However, the day was slightly spoilt by the accommodation at The Old Stables. They are reached along a partially unmade road which wasn’t very well lit. We all had to walk here after the evening reception and there were plenty of potholes filled with water, causing wet feet and the possibility of a twisted ankle.
Our room had a bedside light that didn’t work. The other bedside light appeared to have to be switched off at the socket, meaning you had to get out of bed to do this.
Also, there was no plug in my sink, so a wet-shave was very difficult.
Overall, a wonderful house, lovely staff and the perfect place for a wedding, but it’s a little bit let down by the accommodation at the Old Stables.

Pros: Exceptional, picturesque old English country house with extensive, well maintained grounds. High quality meals and bar service. Attentive staff. Owner was particularly empathetic, and helpful resolving an unexpected difficulty with one of the guests. Bedrooms in the main house are outstanding. Additional accommodation is provided in converted stables nearby within the property grounds. Bedrooms there have basic beds but have en-suite bathroom.
Cons: Very strict rules on check-in. No room access before 4:00pm. If you don’t have a car, the Stables are a a 10 minute walk from the main building. Tough with baggage. No travel cots provided.

How do you make a mid week November birthday special. Answer: you book Grittleton House. 60 people to celebrate 60 years. A small number for such a grand house but still it felt inviting and comfortable. Drinks on arrival in the central atrium and then from the bar in the Library. Warm and cosy. The canapes were delicious and served by smiling polite waiting staff. Matthew and Vanessa Shipp made the whole occasion easy, stress free and the best birthday I have had. Will not wait 60 years to do it again.

Wonderful setting inside and out. Beautiful laid out gardens with wide lawns and colourful flower borders. Excellent food and friendly staff. Couldn't fault. Easy to reach from the M4 or A4 coming from London or Bristol and beyond.

+1
I really wanted to give this place a good review. It’s so beautiful inside and out. We stayed at the converted stables, which was lovely & clean. But it was spoiled when my mother in law tripped & fell on the uneven paving slaps down the side of the accommodation. We had to ring for an ambulance. It’s extremely dangerous. And yes, the cobbled stones my have been there for a long time etc. But the paving slabs should be replaced asap and the cobbled stones cordoned off. There are no warning signs about it and no stopping anyone using that part of the path. Please block this path off before someone else hurts themselves! It could be a young child to an older person. Dangerous for anyone using it.

Room Tip: Avoid uneven dangerous path next to the converted stables. It’s a death trap.

Stayed overnight in The Stables after a wonderful wedding, attended to by friendly staff.
Unfortunately, our overnight accommodation was a let down - the shower door was broken, the milk provided on the tea tray was lumpy and the room did not have a wardrobe to hang the clothes that were worn to the wedding - not even a coat hanger.

Went to a 60th birthday drinks and canapés party in Nov, wow what a fantastic venue and party, the hall and library/bar were perfect for such a party, it felt intimate but was spacious enough so that you never felt crowded, the canapés were excellent and kept on coming, I particularly loved the beef and horseradish Yorkshire puddings, Nelson and his team were excellent. In the summer the House and Gardens must be amazing, I will definitely be returning.
