Detailed Reviews
The Selborne seems to be a friendly family run type of hotel. Everyone from the reception staff, bar staff, waiters & waitresses all come across as smiley, helpful and friendly even the young lads who take the cases to the rooms are friendly fair play!
The hotel is looking a bit tired and could do with some updating but it is clean, the rooms are a good size, the beds comfy and there is plenty of tea/coffee etc available to collect from reception whenever more is needed.
Lots of coach tours stay here and they are very well taken care of by what I could see, the reception staff even wave the coach parties off when their stay is over. Many people return for another holiday stay, that says it all I suppose! Great value for money.

Recently stayed at this hotel as part of a five day coach break with Alfa travel. The hotel is a little dated, however everywhere was spotless, with clean towels every day. Due to the current Covid restrictions the room wasn’t made up daily, but this made no impact on us at all. The food was very nice, in particular the breakfast. All guests were well organised with social distancing, and the dining room staff were all efficient and very friendly and helpful. The bar staff were also very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again. I would like to add how good our driver was. His name was Ronnie, again very friendly and helpful with a good sense of humour, and always felt safe with his driving.

I wouldn’t recognise the hotel from some of the reviews... My experience was very different.
The hotel is on the edge of Dunoon with spectacular views across the Clyde. It is popular with coach tours and there were three coaches there when I stayed.
The hotel is well geared to cope with those numbers and the dining room is large enough to cope for all without having to reset tables. Different groups were allocated slightly different meal times to take pressure off serving staff and kitchen. This worked well, eliminating waiting time and meals were served promptly with minimal waiting.
Breakfast always arrived hot and freshly cooked and hadn’t been sat waiting under a heat lamp for long periods before serving. Food certainly wasn’t ‘awful’ although perhaps the brocolli one night could have done with less cooking time. Portion size was fine for normal appetites and I never left feeling hungry. There was a a good choice of food. Waiting staff were unfailingly polite and helpful and quickly learned the foibles of the tables they were serving..
Reception were always helpful and had a good knowledge of what to do in the area including local bus times.
The hotel is a long low building with very long corridors and creaking floorboards, which did upset some people and yes there are a few steps in places along the corridors. Some areas of communal carpet are getting ready for replacing.
My bedroom had been refurbished recently with modern furniture and a very good walk in shower. It was clean and comfortable. One minor niggle, they no longer provide shower gel or shampoo, so make sure you take your own supply.
For the price we paid this was amazing value.

Travelled to Dunoon with Gibbons coaches for 5 days from the 4th to the 8th September 24. Arrived at the Selborne hotel very late evening. A lovely welcome from the manager and staff. We were given our keys for room 306. Went up in the lift to our room to the third floor.
A lovely twin bed room, very clean, lovely soft carpet, plenty of storage for your clothes, lovely size shower room. Tea coffee supplied, hairdryer available in the room. There was an excellent sea view from our with a beautiful view of the garden. The room was very warm had to open both top windows as the weather was really hot, there was lovely thick curtains hung at the windows.
Went down for our meal at 7 pm due to our time of arrival, as the dinner is at 6pm and breakfast at 8am.
A wide selection of meals, a choice of starters, the soup is absolutely delicious. All the meals were lovely and tasty. They were all set on the plate, as no self-service bowls at the table as of some places.
The breakfast was serve yourself from the table that was set out as you went into the dining room, a choice of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, to take to your table or you could have a full cooked breakfast or anything off the menu that you fancied you could have cereals and cooked breakfast if you wanted. The menu was at the table for the evening meals. Some of the evening meals had to be ordered in the morning at breakfast time but not the starters. The servers would tell you the chefs special when ordering your meal. All the servers were excellent, very polite and friendly, and worked extremely hard.
There was entertainment in the evening with bingo, on the Saturday it was a Disc Jockey which you could choose your song of your choice which was a lovely evening. Bar closed at 11 pm. The price of the drinks I found very satisfactory as not a lot of difference in price to what is paid at clubs at home. Staying at the Selborne was really lovely, very friendly, lovely and clean, the decor was really nice, lovely soft carpets throughout. They did have a nice dance floor near the stage. All the seating was comfortable, spotless toilets, there was even hand gel on the handles on the doors in the ladies toilets that would gently seep out when you pulled the door open.
It was such a delightful stay, at such a lovely hotel, it's such a shame it went so fast. I absolutely enjoyed it, 😉 ☺️

Just spent twixmas here with Alfa travel, hotel tired and in need of some tlc. Rooms not bad but our bathroom was so small you were in danger of banging your head on the wall when you used the toilet. Nice views from the hotel but the food not brilliant, in fact on two nights out of the three we settled on salad. Breakfast was ok but service sometimes very slow, on our last morning our waitress took that long to come and get our tea and coffee order we needed to ask another waiter for service. She served her other tables with their main breakfast order and they came in after we did, in fact we didn't think we would be having breakfast before our coach left. Will not be returning.

Was booked in this hotel for 6days on a self drive holiday.
Although alpha were aware I was taking a rollater as am disabled, they managed to put us in a room as far away from reception as was possible, found it so difficult both going outside & to dining room.
As to the dining room, although face masks are stlll mandatory in Scotland, they were worn but no use using them as chin straps or just over the mouth. There was no self distancing either in the dining room.On the first night Sunday we were kept waiting to be served 3 quarters of an hour till all the coach party guests were served even though lots of them came in after us,on complaining was told they thought we were waiting for our tea/coffee,so I told the supervisor a meal would be nice very apologetic & was told it would be put right at breakfast Mon morning, not so,same carry on again,so I complained yet again, was told it would be put right on the evening meal, was slightly better but so annoying when people are getting served before you yet come in after you.
Now to the food, disgusting offerings is how I would describe the food, miniscule portions, not very appetising either.would not fill a small child.
The noise in the dining room was horrendous why people have to make so much noise at meal times is beyond me.Every day of our stay I was shaking with the noise around me in the dining room.
Finally on Tuesday morning we could stand no more of it & made the decision to pack our cases & leave,we paid £100 more than coach passengers but got worse service, how can that be right.
Don't expect any refund for the 4 days we weren't there but will write to Alpha & see what they have to say.
Finally the general manager was very polite as were the staff but sure they don't know the half of it.

The hotel was clean but very dated, wallpaper loose in the bedroom, paint work not done for years. The corridors were uneven and you could hear everybody going past because the floorboards squeaked every time someone walked along. You could hear the shower being used next door and the water being run.
The staff were friendly and helpful all but the manager who was arrogant and sarcastic, he really shouldn’t be in the job terrible attitude.
What passes for food is terrible, bland cheap and nasty, the portions are more in line with a care home for the elderly.
We traveled with Alfa Travel but never again waste of money, save your money go elsewhere.

Just returned from a 7 day break with Alfa to Dunoon.
From being picked up and transferred to our coach at the interchange everything went smoothly our brilliant and knowledgeable driver Dave made the long journey very enjoyable. When we arrived at the Selborne we had a sea view room with great views over the river Clyde. Our room was cleaned daily with clean towels if needed.
Breakfast was filling plenty of choice as was the evening meal could not fault the meals at all, our waitress Charlotte was excellent nothing was too much for her.
Only disappointment was missing the Northern Lights on our last night due to being a sleep in our comfy beds. Would stay again if it was a bit nearer. Thank you.

Visited on a 7day Alpha Coach Holiday, this hotel has to have the best views of any Leisureplex Hotel we have visited. Even in the atrocious weather, it was a pleasure to sit in our bedroom & admire the scenery. Direct access to the promenade, makes it ideal for an evening stroll. There are lovely walks from Corlarach Car Park, which is only a half hour uphill walk from the hotel.
All of the employees were very helpful & friendly. The dining room is a little crowded & noisy, but the young staff coped efficiently with a smile. The bedrooms were only serviced by request, but we actually enjoyed this option!
It was appreciated that majority of people complied with the Covid restrictions in the hotel & on the Alpha main coach. The real disappointment was the lack of compliance on the Alpha outward feeder coach, masks were on chin, hanging on wrist or completely removed. The return Alpha feeder coach was even worse, all other passengers made no attempt to wear masks – probably the most worrying part of the holiday!
We would definitely recommend this this hotel & plan to make a return visit

I have recently returned from a holiday to Dunoon with Alfa . Our hotel was The Selborne & I have been very impressed with it . The location is perfect with views across the Clyde Estuary .My bedroom was a single but had every comfort including the most fabulous walk in shower . Piping hot water no matter how early in the day . The staff were efficient & most obliging . Any requests were dealt with straight away . The housekeeping service was perfect . The food was good with a huge choice on the menu to suit all dietary needs . Our waiters were excellent & in particular Brian . I would like to return again one day .
