We have just spent a fabulous three nights at the Red Lea and anyone feeling edgy about Covid 19 safety need not worry. The staff have implemented so many measures designed to help guests feel safe, secure and well served. All the procedures are designed for maximum safety whilst still providing a great service for newly-returning clients. Staff are wearing visors. There’s hand sanitiser and all the tables have been spaced well apart.

The hotel has only been open a few days but everything is operating very smoothly in ways guests can trust.
It was our first time at the Red Lea but many guests are very regular returners who clearly love the place and enjoy it as their Scarborough home from home.

We had a premium sea view room with bay window and fantastic view over the sea and Filey Brigg. The room was one of the largest you generally get in a hotel / B and B.
It featured one double and one single bed which we asked for. The TV reception was brilliant and the in room wifi was generally reliable with just a few loss of signal events.

I think the food stands out as fairly exceptional. The breakfasts were beautifully cooked, fresh and inviting whilst the evening meals were delicious. The menu was varied each night with a great choice. One new Covid19 measure is that the evening meal has to be ordered in advance but that’s not a problem at all.

There is plenty of on-street parking outside and very nearby which is free for residents so there’s very little to complain about to be honest. I get the impression that the Red Lea enjoys a great reputation with the regulars and it impressed us as first-timers. I would highly recommend this hotel for you Scarborough holiday.

The staff really appear to care about the service they are providing. We could not have asked for better.

We stayed for 2 nights from the 30th July booking at last minute just to have a break.
The hotel is up on the south esplanade so you get a fantastic view over the bay. It is about a 15 to 20 minute into town downhill which does mean it's a bit of a climb back up. There are buses at the end of the road.
Was a bit dubious about staying in a hotel with the Covid situation.
Had absolutely nothing to worry about hand sanitiser points were available to use in various areas of the hotel.
A one way system was in place to access your room and you were requested to use it if possible. Going up you had to use the life we did not have a problem with this. The life is quite small so may be a problem to some. Coming down you used the stairs.
You get a letter in your room which explains all the Covid precautions that are been taken.
Your room is smogged with sanitiser and no one else enters the room after that apart from you.
Our room was lovely and spacious with tea and coffee making facilities. We were at the back of the hotel.
I would just like to make a special thank you to Luke he was on the bar the night we arrived and served us breakfast both morning. He looked after us really well and was very welcoming as were all the staff.
Would definitely recommend you stay here.

Visited this hotel from 6-8 March 2020. My room was very nice but no view at all. Windows all misted glass. Towels- I would advise that you take your own bath towel as the towel supplied was definitely not suitable for drying after showering.

The food was excellent as was the waiting staff and the bar staff. All very polite and willing to help. One little thing though please advise waiting staff to always serve from the left as I don’t like having someone’s armpit stuck in my face as they stretch over to serve the person next to me.

Finally - I witnessed (heard as directly behind me) a member of my group being berated in front of the whole group of us (around 30 people) because she had revisited her room to use the facilities in her room. It had been made up and because she hadn’t left a bag in the bed it was assumed she had checked out!!!!! As the visitor had not handed in her key (check out time had not yet been reached) she was treated in the most unprofessional manner and was embarrassing for both her and the rest of the group who witnessed this appalling behaviour. I turned round to see the member of staff only to find that this was indeed the hotel owner!!! I have worked in customer facing environment all my working life and if I had spoken to any customer in this way whether in a 1:1 situation or in front of the public I would have been dismissed for gross misconduct. She was just like a headmistress telling off a naughty child, I expected her to give her the cane. It was awful. Miss Trunchball came to mind. This customer deserves an apology fir the way she was berated.

We stayed at the four star Apartments at the left hand side of Redlea hotel . We had our own lift , which went directly into our room ( via key only ). Fantastic & well fitted out apartment with good decor and finish , even having cooking , fridge/freezer and a dishwasher included . The lift also gave access to the swimming pool , Gym & Reception area . Breakfast was very good which is served between 8:00 & 9:30 and includes a hot English breakfast with porridge , fruit juices , coffee/tea and toast .
The location is fantastic which is just above the footbridge and one of the cliff lifts is to the right hand side of the Hotel and within a short walking distance of convenience shops and takeaways .
Car parking is included on the roadside and a parking permit is given by the Hotel which covers you during your stay .
A Well Recommended accommodation for Scarbourgh .

We booked a couple of nights at the Red Lea and it was superb. Staff are helpful and friendly. Very spacious, very clean room and excellent value for money. The breakfast was delicious with a good choice on the menu. The bar/lounge area was comfortable, the decor was colourful and stylish and an excellent selection of drinks available.
The location is fantastic so it's just a short walk to the south bay or the town centre.
Our highlight was the gym with an excellent range of equipment and weights. The pool looked fantastic although we didn't get a chance to use it.
The measures they have in place during covid are exceptional so no worries there. Sanitiser stations, communal areas regularly wiped down, 1 way system in place and socially distanced meal slots.
Fantastic stay and we will definitely be staying again!

Stayed here on Friday night with my husband and daughter. It was absolutely gorgeous. We had a lovely comfortable stay and the staff was lovely. The hotel is located in a fab location and was very clean. We had the premium family room with an amazing sea view. The hotel had sanitiser everywhere and the pool was open to one family at a time and was given booking slots. The bar was a lovely relaxing chilled place to unwind and have a drink after a busy day in the sea front. Highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again

We first came to the Red Lea only 3 months ago in July right after lockdown ended and we were so impressed that we came for a second time in October.
In our view there’s very little not to love about this great hotel. The staff are very welcoming indeed. The rooms are excellent and the food, especially the evening meal, is top notch and great value for money.
This hotel is fully Covid secure and takes protocols very seriously which is exactly what people want in order to feel safe during these challenging times.
Both times we had one of their superior rooms with sea view. These rooms have two beds and they are extremely spacious. Everything is spotlessly clean with rooms being aired and fully prepared before guests arrive.
Ours had plenty of electricity sockets.

On both occasions the wifi reception in the room was top-notch and you can connect both PC and phone to the network. There’s no silly restriction on the number of devices.

For us the evening meal is a vital component of the experience here. All of ours have been piping hot and superbly cooked. We got a brilliant 3 night dinner bed and breakfast deal but, if you were buying it separately, 3 courses is less than £20. Their house white came in at around £15.50 which is great value for a restaurant. You are allocated a table based on your room. This time we were fortunate enough to get one by the window which we loved.

The Red Lea is popular with the older generation so it’s very sedate, ordered, polite and quiet which is exactly how we like it ourselves. I do now suspect that we will become some of their many regular returnees. When you find a great hotel in a place you love there’s no need to chop and change is there?

What a lovely hotel !

This was their first day opening after Covid.

Very impressed with their Covid procedures & cleanliness . We felt very safe.

They kindly upgraded our room to a double as I had booked a twin , and gave us a sea view.

Room was immaculately clean. Bed was comfy and we slept well.

Staff were all so helpful & friendly. They even phoned to find us a restaurant to eat in as their evening dining facilities weren’t open until Monday.

They found us a Tapas restaurant which I would also highly recommend called La Rocos.

Word of warning. Always book your evening meals early if eating out in the town as the restaurants quickly get booked up.

We ate breakfast at the hotel costing £10 per person. A great dining experience with a plentiful breakfast choice. You have to book a time for breakfast so that they can manage the people dining at one time.

We walked into town from the hotel. Very hilly as situated on a cliff. There are lifts chargeable at £1-20 PP one way for those hard of walking. However very easy to negotiate walking down & up.

Highly recommended hotel. We would happily stay again xx

Thank you so much

We really wanted to love this holiday after such a horrid year but, try as we might, we can't give this hotel any kind of positive review. The view from the room speaks for itself, we had to ask for toilet paper twice before it arrived at the room and the bar and restaurant service was dreadful. On the third night we went into dinner 20 minutes late due to the time it took the woman behind the bar to serve us, we were completely blanked by the staff until a waiter, whose sarcasm was worthy of Father Jack, asked if there was a problem, 30 minutes later. We left as all meals were pre-ordered and we knew our starters, one pate, would have sat under a heat lamp for 50 minutes. Well, on our last day the sarcastic waiter could not have apologised enough (obviously worried about losing a tip or a formal complaint) and served us ahead of other guests which just annoyed them and meant we were rushed. Before we got good service (last evening meal and breakfast) there was always something missing and we, and other guests, always had to ask for something. When settling the room bill we weren't asked if everything was OK, they obviously knew. We love Scarborough and feel sorry for our local coach company as the driver was great but we think they should think again about using this hotel.

Response from , General Manager at Red Lea Hotel
Responded 31 Dec 2020
Hello Auroras and thank you for taking the time to post your review. In view of your comments I think it's necessary to respond in defence of our hotel and more importantly our staff. Firstly, you stayed in a very spacious well equipped bedroom - the outlook may be poor but it is not within our control. Had you requested a sea view room, you could have been upgraded. We have reviewed the cctv recording at the time of your stay - on the occasion that you claimed that you were 20 minutes late to sit for dinner, we can see that you actually came to the table just seven minutes after seven o'clock by which time others in your group were being served. The waiter came to your table at 7.18 and you left the table by 7.20. On the other nights you were served three courses and coffee within 35 minutes. It is totally inaccurate to say that your starters would have been held under a heat lamp for 50 minutes. Incidentally, we have been taking pre-orders for dinner as part of our coronavirus procedures. Your insulting comments about our restaurant staff are just too bad and give a totally false impression. Our staff are honest and diligent workers and we are most grateful to them for helping us through this very difficult year. You will not be coming to this hotel in the future.
