Detailed Reviews
This hotel is a bit of a mixed bag. If you’re looking just like somewhere just to sleep, then it’s fine. If you’re looking for a really nice posh hotel, then book somewhere else. We found the staff great, the barman is a nice guy, he thinks he’s a comedian (he was in places) but he brightens the place up. If you want a drink you may need to go and look for him first 🤣
Bearing in mind this building is very old, The decor could do with an updating, along with the carpets, some of the floors are quite amazing on how Un-level they are! Some of electrical sockets were hit and miss if they work or not.
The breakfast is never worth £15 a head, it’s basically the cheapest sausages, beans, bread you could buy in a fry up, if you wanted fruit, it was tinned. so was quite disappointed at the that.
We stayed 3 nights and we never had our room cleaned or new towels so I’m not sure how often they do clean them if you’re here for longer.
It sounds like I’m moaning a lot, but apart from the breakfast it’s a decent hotel, if you just want somewhere to sleep. We enjoyed our stay here, as it’s clean, very good location and like I said, we were out most days all day. I think 3 stars is fair for the place

We booked here at short notice after taxi-ing 2 family members and rather than drive another 2½hrs back home across unlit moors in the dark.
We booked at an incredibly reasonable rate for a double bedroom, through their group Britania Hotels.
The Hotel is in a great location on seafront at the end of a row overlooking the North Bay and Castle. There was some private parking at £6 a night however we had to park on street, as all booked, however the hotel obliged us with a disc to park for free until we were to check out as disc holder parking only on street during daylight hours.
The reception desk were very pleasant very helpful booking our breakfast time in advance. There was also a large lounge overlooking the sea where you could relax with a drink.
The hotel is of a vintage style including the lift, although it appears old, it is very clean and welcoming.
There were a few bits that looked tired and could do with a spruce up, but it didn't detract from our stay at all really.
Our room was on 4th floor and in it we found we had an even bigger superking bed than booked, with an extra smaller room adjoining with a 2rd bed all with a sea view even though just 2 of us.
An absolute bargain!
We could see North Bay and the sealife centre about 1½mile away from hotel room up the coast.
The bay was lit up at night with fairy lights and looked lovely.
The room had good firm beds ideal for back sufferers, there was a kettle with tea+coffee on a long desk table, although could have provided a little more milk and glasses for water or juice.
There was a Tv in both of the rooms. So if 3 stayed would've been even a better deal.
There was also a fan provided too and window opener, as no aircon.
Sammy seagull liked to pass the window and say hello too 😁 🦤
Breakfast was served in a large room with brass chandeliers and at the table but you could have as much or little as you wanted including cereal toast and full English breakfast. Just a slight gripe on breakfast as mushrooms too wet, not drained, hash browns too greasy and sausage was cheap, otherwise all the other items were good and for the price for B&B at £61 was great.
However I would have paid an extra few quid say £65 for B&B if decent sausage, mushrooms in butter and grilled hash brown.

When trying to book accommodation in Scarborough our concern was about the parking. We booked the night before and was told that the hotel carpark was fully booked but if we could find a place on the road we can buy a two day scratch card from the hotel for £6. We arrived at 10:45am and did manage to park on the road outside the hotel so relieved that that went well.
We couldn't check into the hotel until 4pm which does seem late and later than the majority of the hotels we checked out but no worries as we were prepared and hadn't gone to spend time in the hotel.
When we finally checked into our room (5) our attention went straight to the view which was fantastic (see photo)
The room itself was a family room with a double, single and bunk bed. It is desperate need of a refurb especially the bathroom. We took our own towels and pillow cases from reading previous reviews and with covid on the back of our minds but don't think it was necessary as there were plenty of clean towels.
We didn't opt for the breakfast partly due to reading previous reviews and found cafes within walking distance that served good breakfasts.
The WiFi was too weak to use even on the second floor and could only really be accessed from the ground floor.
We payed £95 for one night which includes extra for a sea view. A bit expensive but it was in an excellent location.

This is our 4th time staying at the Clifton and we would not consider staying anywhere else. Slightly more unusual stay due to Covid but all changes as to be expected. Our Room was spotlessly clean a family sea view room on the 1st floor, Very spacious, quiet with great views all round. The only niggle was 2 towels would not be enough for a family but we had taken our own due to covid so not an issue for us. Yes the Hotel is Tired in Places so if your expecting Premier inn Interior then go stay at one. Sadly this year there was no evening meals available this has always been a plus for us as the food is good and suits ALL our family's fussy eaters. Trying to find places to eat was difficult. Breakfast was fine all the basics available. Reading previous comments regarding Rude/Uninterested reception staff we do disagree as we find the staff lovely and nothing is too much trouble, this has been the case on all 4 of our stays. Breakfast staff are always amazing and have been every year. Yes you do have to pay for parking and I do not know of many Hotels (not B&B) near the Coast/City where this is not the case. The hotel is in a perfect location 5 mins from the beach. Perfect for family's on a budget. We will be back next year.

I'm sorry to say this hotel disappoints on all levels, it's hard to find a good thing about it apart from it's in lovely Scarborough.
As you can see from the photos it's no palace that's for sure, but for the money they charge I'm sure some effort could be made.
We booked 2 rooms, 1 should have been a family room for 2 adults with 2 babies, the room was certainly not big enough for a family. Room 2 was what the call a double room, you only have to look at the size of the bed to see that's not the case, the window in this room would not shut and you can see why in the photo that they think a piece of cardboard is the best solution to save money, the bathrom was not fit for purpose, way too cramped and toilet was filthy.
We were a little confused by the rules about the wearing of masks, you had to wear a mask at the reception desk and signs up telling people to wear them in certain areas, but some guests just did not bother and were not confronted by staff.
I dont like writing bad reviews as it makes it look like I'm moaning or not having good time, we had a good time even though the weather was shocking, but this hotel let it down more than the weather.
I'm sure Basil Fawlty would feel relieved to know this hotel makes his look like the Hilton.
I'm not sorry to say we will NOT be using this hotel again, they need to use the vast amounts of money the make from good paying guests to at least do some refurbishments and decorating, just simple fixes on window locks would be a start....and cleaning the toilet would also help too. 😡

I have just returned from another very lovely stay at the Clifton. I have been returning here for many years, and for good reason.
On arrival, check in was very quick and efficient. I had a lovely room on the front with a spectacular view of the beautiful North bay. It was wonderful to sit in my room listening to the sea in the mornings as the sun poured in through the window. Contrary to some reviews on here, my room was extremely clean. The white
bedding sheets were immaculate.
I was very impressed with the measures in place within all areas of the hotel, to protect against Covid spread. The plastic barrier remains in place at reception, there are hand sanitizer stations throughout the hotel ( entrance, bar area, corridors etc) and on entering my room, I found the TV remote bagged up with sanitizer sticker on. It was also comforting to see that many people were also using face masks in the public areas.
Every member of staff I came into contact with was happy, friendly and chatty. I booked quite last minute so was unable to park in the hotel car park. This was not a problem at all, and the very helpful receptionist sold me a voucher for on street parking for a nominal cost of £6 which I felt was very reasonable.
It is undeniable that the hotel is rather dated. But this is one of the reasons I love it here, as it is part of its charm. Its like stepping back in time, or like a comforting hug from a grandparent. I love the old-fashioned 120 year old lift ( which worked the whole time I was there), and the provenance of staying somewhere where poet, Wilfred Owen, penned some of his most inspiration works. To enjoy the Clifton is to appreciate it for what it is. If you want a modern, soulless chain hotel, I suggest you book a chain hotel.

I came here with my mam for 4 nights in early August having booked online and then booking a reserved parking spot just before travelling. The tariff and parking spot are paid for on arrival. The rooms were adequate albeit with 1 or 2 niggles but the customer service on the whole was better than the last time and the cleanliness also better as the rooms are sanitised prior to using them. However, this means we had to ask at reception to top up with clean towels, toilet roll or tea making stuff though this wasn't a problem for the staff on reception. We had good sleep while we were there and decent views over the North Bay (and the car park). Breakfast was OK (good sausage and scambled egg but salty bacon). I initially had my doubts about coming back here after our June 2018 visit but this time it was a much better stay.

Likes - The location is great for the north bay and has beautiful views, albeit through dirty windows
Disliked - The lack of cleanliness given it was closed for so long you would think it would be in good repair but this is not the case. Even pre-covid I would have been very dissatisfied with the standard of cleanliness. Given COVID, it is not good at all. Some of the staff quite abrupt. Instead of telling guest they wound be servicing their rooms they have a card in a sealed pack of teas and coffees, telling people they won’t be servicing rooms. Which we didn’t have a problem with at all, but it could have been mentioned on check in. You have to book your time slot for breakfast for each day, again absolutely fine but again not mentioned at check in. We asked about it and booked the first day then nothing was mentioned about subsequent days so this caused a bit of issue checking in for breakfast the following day. The bedrooms were Not clean to a high standard. Despite sticker on the doors saying it was fully sanitised. We arrive to the bunk beds having dirty sheets on them. They were stained but also covered in sand, so not just a case of stains that hadn’t come out in the wash. There was cup/glass marks on the bedside table from a drink which was sticky. We put a bag on the top of the wardrobe and it came down filthy, see pics of after we wiped the top. Not good value for the money at all,£343 for 2 nights for 2 rooms, rely on the location and charge a premium for it. I’m not one for going round picking faults and didn’t take pics of all the areas that were an obvious issue as I wanted to keep it positive for my father and children. The quality of the breakfast was shocking. We were first sitting at 8am and the floor was filthy.. did not fill you with confidence that the hotel was to normal standards, never mind COVID cleanliness. The sausages were the cheapest I’ve even seen and just fell into mush when you tried to cut them, I’d have been interested to know the meat content. On our second morning we were lucky enough to encounter one pleasant member of staff.

We arrived at the hotel before check in time and was able to book parking for the week and pay for the room, but we had to wait for the room to be ready, which was fine. We were given a five person sea view room, which was an upgrade as we only booked a standard four person room. The hotel is definitely dated And most places smelt damp, the room was spacious, with amazing views, so glad of the upgrade. The room was fairly clean but I took antibacterial wipes and wiped down everything myself. The beds were comfy and sheet were clean. The bathroom was small, clean towels. The shower was a nightmare, it pointed horizontal and flooded the whole bathroom, in the end we showered whilst holding the shower head. The milk and tea bags were out of date, I didn’t realise until I had lumpy milk in my mouth and nearly vomited. The bed sheets and towels were never changed during our four night stay. We also had a phone call one day accusing us of smoking in the room, we had kids with us, so that would never have happened, I was in the shower, so putting it down to that, but did not like the tone of the receptionist when she accused us of smoking!!! We had to ask for extra tea bags, milk and toilet roll as nothing was checked or replaced. Overall experience was ok, but we used the hotel as a place to sleep, we were out most of the day and evening, so was just a place to rest our heads. We didn’t book breakfast and didn’t use the bar. No instructions upon arrival, hand gel and signs about social distancing all over the hotel so that was good. Most staff were pleasant but one receptionist was very very rude. Fab location, we left the car in the car park through the day and walked everywhere, we drove to Scarborough after 6pm when the parking was free. Overall a pleasant stay.

Booked for 1 night Sunday, you need to pre-book parking £6 to park in hotel carpark, wasn’t aware however managed to park at side on street £6 for parking permit purchased at hotel so not bad as valid for 2 days. They have put measures in for Covid which I found to be a very good standard, we had a ground floor room very quiet, bed comfy overall pleasant room (small niggle no toilet brush) Room above however had horrendous floor boards..... sounded like pipes expanding fortunately they didn’t walk around much 😂 location spot on & would return.
