The Crown Spa Hotel Scarborough by Compass Hospitality offers a mixed bag of experiences. Guests appreciate the scenic location and the spa and pool amenities, though some feel that facilities require updating. While the service can be warm and attentive, staff disorganization and slow responses have been noted, particularly during peak times.
Rooms, often described as outdated, along with the general atmosphere of the hotel, seem to lack the revitalization that many guests are seeking. Additionally, noise disturbances and varied cleanliness standards have been a concern, leading to questions about the hotel's overall value.

Detailed Reviews
We are from Scarborough so know the hotel & we had stayed under the previous ownership. We booked a King Size Executive sea view room but there was nothing like Executive or King Size about it. For some reason there was a TV at the end of the bath. There was no ‘walk in’ shower but a shower over the bath with a flimsy curtain. On checking in for three nights we were advised there’d be no cleaning of the room nor would bed linen be changed due to CoVid restrictions. I am all for following guidelines but this sounded like a lame excuse. If we’d wanted to make our own bed we’d have booked self catering. We took our six month old ( Cocker ) dog ( William ) with us and were charged £20 per night for the privilege yet ‘no cleaning’? Not even a welcoming dog bowl of water. We brought a dog cage for him so in any event he would not be allowed on the furniture ( as is the case at home ) so we felt that was a rip off. The temporary bar was often unattended; there was not much atmosphere. Breakfast was ‘ok’ and the service polite / courteous, served to the table. As for the Spa, priority at times was for children. Again. there were CoVid guidelines to follow but too much effort / restrictions as the changing rooms were closed so we abstained from using the facility. The only thing going for this hotel is the view and the free parking permit, therefore, for us we felt ‘short changed’ as it was an expensive three night stay to be fair.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While we sincerely wish you had a better experience with us, it is feedback like this that we learn from and use to improve ourselves. We acknowledge your dissatisfaction with some aspects of you stay and are working with our respective teams to rectify this for future stays. We do have to follow rules regarding the servicing of our rooms and also our food and beverage staff can only provide table service, and on occasion can be very difficult. We also have to follow government guide lines within the spa and gym. We hope for an opportunity to welcome you back to provide the hotel experience many of our guests have come to trust us for. Yours sincerely, Philippe

I booked a 3 night break at the Crown Spa for me and me wife as a getaway from the madness. On arrival at the hotel I queued to check in which took about 30 mins, the young receptionist was very nice, but didn’t really explain much such as breakfast times, using the spa facilities, location of the bar/restaurant etc. We opted to pay for parking which was fine, we drove around the back to park up and we were met with about 8 dirty mattresses piled in the car park, this wasn’t a great 1st impression for a 4* hotel. We went up to the room to expect a bottle of Prosecco ( at the cost of £28.95 which I thought would be a nice surprise for me wife to find a bottle of red wine) this was promptly rectified. We then sat on our balcony drinking a nice glass of Prosecco, with a mish mash of patio furniture (indoor table outside). The room was very nice, but dated, we did ask for the room to be cleaned again the next day as above the balcony doors it was full of cob webs.
We went for breakfast, all seemed good apart from some staff wearing gloves, some none and others just on one hand. We ordered our breakfast, which looked lovely after arriving very promptly, we soon found the sausage to be uncooked and rest not very hot. This was rectified and the second attempt was a lot better. We made our way out for the day and then we returned, we decided to have a drink in the reception area, as instructed we sat down as it was table service, after 15 minutes of waiting we gave it up as a bad job as no one took our order. We returned to our room and it had been cleaned. We decided to have a shower before we headed out for our evening meal, oh only 1 bath towel, which was the 2nd time we had to request another one, that’ll explain why we couldn’t get a drink as the bar man was delivering the towels. On the final evening we discovered the large bar at the side of reception and I have to say it was lovely, nicely decorated and the night guys Nigel and Rory are an asset to your team, they couldn’t do enough. I know we are in a pandemic and things are different, I just don’t think the Crown Spa warrants a £200 per night price tag as I have stayed in a lot better for a lot less. I hope this is just down to us been unlucky.

Having read several negative reviews I was apprehensive about my choice of this hotel. The visit proved that my worries were largely unjustified. The hotel does look a little tired in some areas. Our room was clean, spacious with modern furnishings. The floor did creak quite loudly in a few places but such features are not unusual in an old building. The hotel location is very good and we were fortunate to find a parking space only a few yards from the hotel. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel and we enjoyed the food. The choice of dishes was more than adequate for our 3-night stay. The waiters deserve credit for working very hard at busy times, almost running from tables to the kitchen. The housekeeping services were limited due to the Covid-19 measures in place but we have to learn to live with such restrictions these days. Housekeeping did respond promptly to the few requests that we made. I would book this hotel again but try harder to get a sea-view room.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive review of The Crown Spa Hotel. The last six months have been the most stressful we have ever experienced for both the staff and management who really are trying hard to provide the service expected by our guests, sadly we do receive reviews that I feel at times are unjust. I will pass on your positive comments to both staff and management who I know will be delighted that we have another satisfied guest. I do hope that a future visit to Scarborough brings you back to the Crown as nothing pleases us more than seeing a returning guest. Sincerely, David Chambers – General Manager.

Arrived a little early so waited in bar area. When room was ready there were a few issues, pillows smelt sweaty, quilt didn’t seem to fit the cover, cobwebs in corners dusty spots. Didn’t do a four in a bed inspection but for an ‘executive’ room you expect a bit better. Barman who served us drinks was the man who came to change pillows and quilt cover etc. Charged for parking when did not require so they owed me money back which they settled at checkout. Breakfast staff very friendly and professional in these strange COVID times. However the food not the best and poached eggs not runny at all. Wanted to have a swim and spa but limited to a set time. Tried to book for treatment but told fully booked even though we only just got there. May as well have gone to a standard hotel as no spa received

I have stayed in this hotel many times before and was expecting at least some sort of service resembling 4 stars, even in these strange times. I went with a friend (June 14th for 3 nights) and we had 2 sea view rooms at a substantial price. When I asked for someone to help with the luggage I was assisted, but told they weren’t supposed to touch baggage! Why? Surely sanitising hands before and after and wearing a mask would suffice?
I had chosen a double room as I wanted the option to do some painting inside if the weather was poor. As it happens the window was so dirty that you could barely see the sea. I mentioned this when I went to reception and it was duly noted and ignored. I also asked if I could have some green tea bags and this also was ignored. My teas, coffees and toiletries were stocked up in a haphazard fashion and I had to ring down for replacements, I did though get the green tea on the last day.
My friend found a pair of dirty knickers behind her chair, so obviously the room hadn’t been properly cleaned. My room wasn’t overly clean, with black fingerprints on the cupboard door. We were informed that the beds would not be made each day but only after 3 days, when they would be completely stripped and changed. That is fair enough, but wiping round the sink each day would be helpful as at least I would do that at home….
We enquired about breakfast but were told that the only option was in-room continental and we could have the booking sheets to order. These never arrived. Fortunately a short walk through the gardens opposite took us down to the Spa café at the seafront where excellent and well-priced breakfasts (and other meals) were available. I also had someone else’s bill put under my door one night. When I mentioned it the receptionist seemed unconcerned!
One of the lifts doesn’t work properly and my friend was stuck, trying to get her case down to my car as I held up traffic in the pull-in bay. But never mind. If you hold the doors together it will move. A member of staff told her this, so it’s obviously not a new issue.
Outside this 4 star establishment there are several dead trees in pots and when I sat in the lounge the floor was filthy.
I do understand that these are difficult times and staffing must be an issue but if you are charging 4 star prices then please provide an appropriate service. If you can’t do this, then charge better prices. In the past I have been rung up after I arrived to see if everything was OK. No contact this visit.
I feel that a B&B would be a better option and probably the service would be better.

I don't usually write a review containing any negativity without approaching the hotel first with my disquiet. However, during three nights, including one dinner (most of which was uneaten), in one of the Crown Plaza's best rooms, we were never once asked if everything was O.K. This hotel might just scrape 3 ½ * on the strength of the excellent spa facilities and the kindness and attention of most of the staff (we encountered only one dud).
The location, on the Esplanade, is matchless and the view from our room a delight. I reckon I was paying £200 for the view and £45 for the rest of it. Our room was a bit tired and grubby – my wife spent the first 20 mins removing dust and smears. The balcony was disgusting, with the detritus of several weeks evident. Following a telephone call, two cleaners quickly appeared to remedy the situation, but we should not have been shown to a room in such a state in the first place. Otherwise, it was adequate, although the designer who paired red, flowery curtains with pale blue, regency-striped pelmets is probably in the wrong profession.
The bathroom was smart and modern, but the 'rain forest' shower spoiled by a cheap plastic curtain.
We decided to eat in the restaurant for our first night, to save searching elsewhere.
The food was quick to appear, copious and totally lacking in taste or any semblance of culinary merit. I would not have fed the penne to my dog, and I don't even have a dog! Fortunately, there are a couple of half decent 'Indians' in the town. Breakfast was better; excellent smoked Haddock and a chef who made a decent fist of a soft poached egg not dripping in vinegar. Sadly, the plastic bread was really cheap, boarding-house stuff and there was no yoghurt one morning.
Given its location, this could be a spectacularly good hotel. It needs an active, motivated manager with international experience and a very firm hand.

My husband and I stayed early July 2021 for 5 days. We stayed in an Executive King with sea view room.
We usually go abroad and stay in 4 or 5* resorts. We chose The Crown Spa as it seemed to match the type of hotel we are used to.
On arrival we were welcomed and given free parking vouchers for roadside parking outside the hotel. All good.
Room was spacious and modern, if a little warm. Carpet could do with a clean but generally all good.
We ate in for breakfast every day and couldn’t fault the food, we ate in the hotels Taste restaurant in the evening on 3 occasions and again found the food tasty, well cooked and of generous proportions. We used room service most days which was quick and always delivered with a smile.
Spa facilities were all completely booked up but we were able to use the pool and steam rooms once. They were ok.
Overall everything was very good, the bed was comfy but the room was very warm. I didn’t give 5 stars to the review as our room was completely missed by housekeeping on one day and when paying over £200 per night, this is unacceptable. When we brought this to the hotel’s attention however, fresh towels and tea and coffee were brought up immediately and a good clean was completed the following day.
Given the current Covid circumstances, everything was as good as could be hoped for. Loved Scarborough we would visit again.

Just returned from a 2 night stay in room 112. Not sure what to expect as read some worrying reviews. We must be on a different planet.
The room was fine. If picky a few marks on the paintwork and the odd tiny scuff on the wallpaper, as is a par for the course in busy hotels. It was very clean and not a mark or bit of fluff on the carpet.
The reception staff checked us in very efficiently, explaining all new safety precautions. Told staff would not enter our room but all toiletries, drink replenishments, and clean towels are left outside the door and to ring if anything else was needed.
We used the pool which was spotless. I am sometimes not happy with the standards in hotel pools and this one well passed the test.
I believe that there is a reduced menu due to Covid. The breakfast was delicious and we were warned about the hot plates.
Dinner was also very good.
After being very nervous about what we would find, I have no hesitation in paying a return visit.

Poor cleaniless lets this place down for sure which is unnecessary all that is needed is management to ensure cleaning takes place and that rooms are cleaned properly. I spoke with management and the attitude was as bad as the cleaniless of the room, showed no interest or intended to put things right this is why I am writing this review and sharing pictures so other people know what to expect as I believed we were going to get a 4* hotel and expected it for the 469 x 3 nights we paid was so disappointed to have been given a room in this condition. On a positive Great location clean bright entrance, clean reception area and restaurant staff excellent, food good..... Surprised to see all these reviews on cleaniless for this hotel, 2 other couples also complained about this during our visit so I am not alone and I am expecting a robot reply from the management team as I have seen in all of there responses to reviews.....same response to all..... Step up management you need to take action.

We were thoroughly disappointed in this hotel! After genuinely looking forward to staying here, we couldn’t have been more disappointed. When arriving out front it looked great, however go round the back to park, you struggle. The car park is cramped and expensive. The reception area was nice, the staff were good. However after booking a “mini suite” we were greeted by a tired looking average room looking over the car park. The furniture was dated, poor quality and mismatched. Not what you would expect from a “mini suite” in a “4 star hotel”. Even with a hanger on the door stating the room had been fully cleaned due to COVID, it was not up to standard, mould and grime in the bathroom, dust all over the living area and tiles not fitted correctly in the bathroom. Room was far too hot, even after turning the radiators down (appeared to do nothing), then opening the window means you’ll be woken up first thing due to activity at the back of the building. The bathroom was nice on the face of it, however the sink taps are ridiculous and not right for the sink, the toilet seat is not right for the toilet, and certain tiles are not fitted correctly, to name a few things. On to the restaurant, firstly seated next to another couple even though the whole restaurant was empty. Secondly the waitress not only whispered the whole time, but had no idea what drinks they offered so had to keep going back to check. Lastly, the food was average for the cost, main meal was presented well and then arrived with oven cooked chips?
In summary, this hotel is average at best. The location is okay, however the walk down to the coast is very steep so some people may struggle. I would suggest the management personally spend some time going over the rooms themselves and will quickly notice the issues.
