Having visited this hotel before many years ago, and enjoyed the food in the restaurant, my wife and i decided to book it as a non resident on friday 15th october. Positives Friendly waiting staff, And food fine. Negative 2 hours 20 mins to be served 2 courses is unacceptable for any establishment let alone a supposed 4 star. Just to set the record straight we were not alone with our complaint as there were several others voicing their displeasure aswell. 1 couple waited ages to even be asked for an order, the gentleman eventually asked a waiter was there anyone serving here? A guy eventually said sorry about that, i, ll get it sorted. After another 10 mins or so, still no order taken, so the couple quite rightly walked out. Another couple who were residents waited a ridiculous time for their meals, and the old guy jokingly said should i put my order in for breakfast now!! Shocking experience, and a one my wife and i won, t repeat again.

This hotel has some very good points and some which make it one to avoid. The hotel is easy to find and in a great location. It is in an old building which has been kept fresh with tasteful decoration. On arrival the cheery efficient receptionist told us 'We have a really lovely room for you. True it was spacious, very clean and had fancy lighting in the bathroom and over the bed, even a television above the bath. It was very quiet with no gulls screaming. But it was at the back of the hotel with a small window looking out to the backs of other buildings and the ventilators from the downstairs toilet blocks were just feet away from the open window. The promise of lifts to all floors was true but it did not mention that our room was down several stairs on exit from the lift so check this on check in if you have mobility problems as we do. Then there is the parking problem. Free parking is available on street outside but while we were there not a single space was available within several streets. So we purchased parking in the hotel's own extremely cramped car park for £9. We took the last space the first night and made it up the stairs from the rear entrance but the next night there were no spaces even though we had paid another £9. We eventually discovered a pay and display car park a couple of hundred yards away which had spaces and was free overnight. We then asked for that night's £9 to be refunded which the receptionist readily agreed to and took back our permit, telling us the money would be deducted from our final invoice and waved us off. At this point I asked her if she knew which room we were in and she didn't. On checking out we found no deduction had been made. Why should we have to work so hard for little things like this in a supposedly four star hotel?

The reception staff were friendly, professional and helpful and we were booked in quickly and efficiently. We had a lovely room with a balcony and sea view. It did look a little tired but was warm and clean. The Crown has a concierge, John, who was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We intended to have one evening meal and eat out for the other two nights but after our first meal we opted to eat in the restaurant for the rest of our stay; the food was well prepared, tasty and varied, many thanks to Bobby the chef who obviously takes great pride in his work. We enjoyed good weather on our first day so just enjoyed walking up and down the sea front and sitting out in the many cafes. The second day was rainy so we went to Scarborough Fair near Filey, they have an excellent exhibition of fairground organs, vintage cars and motorbikes; there is also a cafe with delicious cakes. This place is well worth a visit. We had been apprehensive about our short break, our first in well over a year, but the staff and the guests were all sensible, some wore masks and all stuck to social distancing, so we felt comfortable and safe, so much so that we have booked for Christmas. An excellent break and a big thank you to all the hard working employees.

My partner and I came here for a much needed night away where we mainly just wanted to relax in the spa and thought, especially at £360 a night, we had found the perfect place. Unfortunately, this hotel is not a ‘spa’ as the name would indicate, nor is it 4*. I’ll start with some positives, - The reception staff were lovely, especially one particular gentleman who couldn’t have been more customer orientated. - The room was lovely and spacious with a nice bathroom and sea view Here’s the negatives, - We paid £9 fir the car park which is hardly fit for purpose, but the lack of off street parking is an issue too - We though the spa would be relaxing but there were no loungers round the pool to relax (or space for any), the pool was cold, potential gym members were being shown round, kids were allowed in so not very quiet, the jacuzzi was luke warm, and whilst trying to relax in the sauna staff were allowing parents to show their children round (even though it was meant to be no kids in that area) - Our massages were nice but mine was meant to be 1 hr but I went in at 14.05 and was back at the pool by 14.45 … it was £66 - It would have been a lot nicer if we had been given robes and slippers instead of having to ask for them, and if they offered service (drinks) in the spa which the ones we have been to previously do - The ‘balcony’ in the room was just wide enough for us to squeeze past each other - The Bed was actually to single beds pushed together, which was not comfortable - We rang for room service and when it came the staff member did not know how we could pay or how much but said the only way was to sign the receipt which was at the bar… so my partner went down to the bar to sign it and we were still charged for room service - In the bar it seemed understaffed - At night we had to call reception as it is dog friendly and some lovely person had left their dog alone in the room and the poor thing had barked continuously for an hour - Our room was above the bar, which was really loud and I could hear people until just after 2am… the walls are extremely thin so I had next to no sleep Unfortunately we will not be returning as it’s overpriced and underwhelming
