Hotel's Favourite
First stay at Wrea Head Hall having seen an Autumn offer in the Cheshire Life magazine for one night, a la carte dinner and a cream tea thrown in. The reviews looked good and we booked for 2 nights in a superior room in the main building. The staff at Wrea Head are simply wonderful, polite, knowledgeable, and friendly. Very efficient... anything you asked for you got... our bedroom No 12 had a vaulted ceiling, and single pane windows. It was a little nippy during the night before the heating came on at 6 am. They did have a high tog quality quilt in the wardrobe, and we put that on the bed which made all the difference. I understand that room 12 is due for a makeover soon but it was spotlessly clean and well maintained. We noted the king size bed had a Hypnos mattress, and we slept well. The main building is stunning, beautifully decorated and the various lounges, dining rooms, library, bar and conservatory all had quality furnishings. The a la carte menu was extensive and the food great... De-structured Beef wellington was cooked perfectly to my preference, and it was a large, quality filet steak. I had the full English cooked Breakfast, and it was perfect with quality sausage and back bacon. Good to see quality ceramic tea pots and not horrible metal ones. Only annoying thing which I can forgive them for is the small sealed packets of Lurpak butter. Trying to get the sealed corner of the packets open is always a nightmare especially if you have big. pudgy fingers. Even the wife struggled to get them open. This hotel has a large number of loyal regular guests. Average age of guests probably around 60, no children, no dogs and no boom, boom background music. 'Josh' the barman knew what a 'Rusty Nail' was and we couldn’t fault any of the service. Expect to pay £7.80 for a Bombay Sapphire Gin with Fevertree tonic and £5.20 for a pint of John Smiths. The hotel grounds are glorious and extensive. It’s a fair walk down the long drive to the main road. We will visit again but probably on a special offer out of season. I would eat in the restaurant but if it was more than one night, I would probably try a dinner out in the Scarborough or Scalby area. This is not a party hotel but a place to relax in quality surroundings and comfort.

Wrea Head Hall had only just opened when we stayed here with friends a couple of weeks ago, and the staff went above and beyond to make guests feel safe and adhere to covid 19 guidelines. Everywhere was clean and sanitised and all soft furnishings, crockery and glassware had been removed from the rooms and toiletries, tea and coffee etc were in sealed bags. We received an email the night before giving us our room number and guiding us through check in (there was no check in), and explaining the measures that had been taken. We were a little taken aback by the severity at first, but once we arrived we could see that everything was being done with the guests in mind, and as the hotel had only just opened, they (like all of us) are learning how to manage the 'new normal'. Our room was magnificent and bathroom was stunning, with a roll top bath to die for. We had to choose our evening meal and breakfast choices on a tick sheet and submit it to reception before 5pm and guests are only allowed in the bar for 30 minutes before their allocated meal slot, but this wasn't a problem. The food was lovely and the service excellent.
Our only minor niggle was that the staff were inputting guests' bills into the till in the bar while we were enjoying an after dinner drink and every entry created a bleep, which was irritating. We did ask if they could silence it but were told this wasn't an option so we moved to another room. Perhaps this could be done in the office rather than in the bar where guests are relaxing?
Wrea Head hotel was a perfect location to explore the coast and surrounding countryside and a wonderfully tranquil venue to relax after the past few months of working 15 hour days through lock down. I would definitely recommend it and we will certainly stay here again.

It is just a year since our very first visit to Wrea Head Hall for my 50th birthday surprise. We fell in love instantly with this luxury, Gothic mansion and we have returned on several occasions since then. Wrea Head Hall never fails to amaze us. However, on our visit in December 2019, for my birthday once again, somehow, and we don't know how this is possible, as the service and hospitality is always outstanding, but this time it was even more magical. We questioned ourselves how this could be and then realized that Wrea Head Hall is not just a hotel break for us but it has become our second home. From driving up the long impressive driveway with landscaped gardens and mature trees, to entering into this beautiful hotel with all its history and charm, to being greeted with sincere warmth by Kevin, Len and all of the staff, to sitting down in the beautiful 1881 restaurant and being served the most delicious food by friendly staff, to resting in exquisite rooms that each have their own individual style and character and are all kept immaculate by the housekeeping staff. What a team they are! We spoke to many guests who have been returning to Wrea Head for many years and they also share the same feelings as we do. All this is what makes it magical. It was like being away with family. The atmosphere was delightful.
We would just like to share this experience...one late afternoon, as we rested in our room, we heard the sound of bagpipes playing out on the terrace. We couldn't see anyone in the darkness but listened to the beautiful sounds it made until it faded away, When we went down for our evening meal, a dear gentleman was writing his Christmas cards in front of the roaring fire. He spoke to us and it was clear just how much Wrea Head Hall meant to him as well. We asked him if he had heard the bagpipes earlier to which we found out it was actually the gentleman himself. He told us that he was in a pipe band and liked to practice everyday so he had asked Kevin, the General Manager, if he could go out into the grounds of the hotel to do so. The gentleman knew it had been my birthday and asked if I would like him to play 'Happy Birthday!' on the bagpipes the next day. I was thrilled and said that would be wonderful and told him our room number. We made sure we were in our room before 5.30 the following day and without fail, the gentleman, wearing Scottish attire, appeared out of the darkness and played the tune to me. Other guests looked out from their windows and it was a moment in my life I will never ever forget. Where else could you experience something like this? We met him and his dear wife in the bar afterwards and thanked him. These are memories we will cherish forever. So Wrea Head Hall is a treasure of a gem gently tucked away in the village of Scalby, but only a short drive in to Scarborough itself, making it the most idyllic location. We highly recommend Wrea Head Hall and know that any new guests will not be disappointed. They will fall in love with Wrea Head just as much as we did!

On the outskirts of Scarborough, Scalby to be precise, about three miles and a lovely walk back into town, the hotel is set in acres of it’s own grounds and right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.
Having undergone sympathetic renovation in recent years this Victorian building is beautiful, with Arts & Crafts interiors, opulent decoration, a fabulous staircase, and most importantly in a Victorian property, modern bathrooms and plumbing.
Coping very well with the covid crisis, the staff are adopting well disciplined routines to ensure the safely of all, and we feel their attention to this very reassuring, which complements their friendliness and professionalism.
Our lovely bedroom has plenty of space to spread into, and two views over different aspects of the grounds. The super-king bed very comfortable and as mentioned a good bathroom with separate and very controllable shower.
Public spaces include the galleried hall, bar and conservatory plus a covered and open terrace - perfect for a drink overlooking the grounds, nearby fields and surrounding hills.
Whereas normally there are two levels of menu, dining is currently restricted to one menu and the food pre-ordered earlier in the day, however the choice and quality is very good and one doesn’t feel disadvantaged. There is a very good wine list, which contains plenty available by the glass across the price spectrum, and even the more expensive labels are sensibly priced.
An excellent hotel we look forward to revisiting.

We booked the Wrea head Hall Hotel for 4 nights in August as the starting point for our holiday, We also chose the hotel as the said they catered for allergies. The first thing to say is the Wrea Head hall Hotel is a lovely hotel a real gem in Yorkshire, the rooms are spacious comfortable and well decorated. The rooms in the coach house although decorated in a more contemporary style they are still in keeping with the main hotel. The standard of the food is extremely high, however there is a significant
problem with regards to the dissemination of critical allergy information to staff.
The Hotel had clearly put Covid controls in place that were being being used and adhered to. these included face masks, hand sanitiser at every entrance, socially distanced tables in the restaurant and reduced room servicing to reduce the staff access into your room. Servicing of your room would be undertaken if you requested it.
We originally booked room through booking.com but were contacted the following day to be told that Booking.com had double booked the room, after discussion with Mathew we agreed to book room with the hotel direct as it was abetter deal. we were told room would 31 would still be accessible due to my mobility issues.
When we arrived we were delighted when we were told we had been upgraded to room 1 and taken o that room, imagine our shock and disappointment when a few minutes latter Mathew returned apologising that he had made a mistake and room 1 was booked by another couple named Williams. We were then taken to room 31.
Although I managed the stairs with my mobility issue it was not ideal as there was no handrail on the right.
As guests we were asked complete our evening meal and breakfast menu choices and hand them into reception each morning. we clearly detailed my gluten free requirement due to my Coeliac condition. my wife also wrote clearly on the menu form that I was a Coeliac and must be gluten free. Despite clearly giving the gluten free requirement, on a number of occasions I was given the wrong food i.e. bread, sausages etc .I had no confidence which resulted in me having to question the waiting staff, I did speak to the hotel manager after I was given a normal sausage at breakfast and when I queried this with the waiter he confirmed it was not gluten free. The waiter took my breakfast away only to bring it straight back minus the sausage which is completely unacceptable. There were a number of guests staying at the hotel at the same time as us that were Coeliac or gluten free and they to were experiencing the same problems and were also having to question what they were being served.
I believe there is a breakdown in communication between what the gusts were detailing on their menu choice sheets and the kitchen. and it's more by luck than judgement that I or another guest was not made ill by the breakdown in communication.
It is only the lack of attention to detail that stops me from awarding an excellent / exceptional rating to the Wrea Head Hall Hotel. The issues we had could easily be corrected.

We stayed for two nights.
Easily found with plenty of parking.
Well maintained ‘country estate’ grounds.
During this road trip we stayed at three similar properties, so sadly this review is relatively objective.
Whilst others have given excellent reviews, only the saving grace of an excellent chef saved our review from being average. It really does trouble us writing a review such as this at a troubled time for the hospitality industry.
Staff throughout were professional and efficient, but that’s where it stopped for us. None displayed any willingness to engage to the point of utter detachment from the guests apart from performing their duties efficiently.
The interior of this fine country house has obviously received plenty of TLC without being over renovated and is wonderful.. The terrace was inviting during the fine weather of our stay.
Our ‘deluxe’ room (6) was clean and in very good condition with a comfortable bed. However, we found it cramped by any comparison with very limited room to move around and equally limited capacity to spread even our limited baggage about. The very small bathroom was marbled throughout with quality fittings, but with very limited space for anything other than a toothbrush etc. I totally accept that in a house of this nature (and we’ve stayed in plenty) rooms can be limited in various ways, but to class this as Deluxe with an appropriate rate is stretching matters to the limit.
Now to the positive. The quality and standard of our two dinners was outstanding - and we did ask that our thoughts be given to the chef and his brigade. The dining experience was for us the saving grace of our stay. Breakfast was to a high standard.
The ‘Covid’ procedures worked to an extent, although we were at a loss to understand why on both evenings the 3 tables in use out of a room of 6 (or 7?) were all adjacent rather than spread out. I’m beginning to believe that the pre ordering of meals has nothing to with Covid but is more for the benefit of kitchen management. If that’s what it takes to produce such excellent dinners then so be it, but to have to decide on the next mornings breakfast by 1700 the previous afternoon? We get it that the ‘cereal’ buffet is a nono, but surely a standard hot breakfast can be ordered at the time, if necessary on paper to limit personal interaction. We really have no idea on breakfast appetites until after the early morning coffee!

We stayed for seven nights in Room 6 and thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent at the Wrea Head. The welcome letter prior to arrival was informative and very useful. All staff were masked when in the hotel. The room was spotless and any toiletries or tea/coffee requests were immediately answered. The breakfast selection was large and varied. The evening meal was delicious and I must say over the seven days I tried everything except the vegetarian options. See the photographs of the amazing food on offer.
Overall I would like to say a big thank you to Mark and his staff. Everyone was so polite and met our every need. A special mention must go to Len who made us laugh every evening during the dinner service.
I know we only got one hour in the library (dining room) but never felt rushed. This was due to ordering earlier in the day for the evening. A great idea!
Thank you Wrea Head! We will return.

Having stayed at Wrea Head Hall last summer, therefore having first-hand experience of the superb standards of cleanliness and service on offer, we tentatively booked a short break here at the end of September. One of us had been shielding and so we were very cautious about risk in these difficult pandemic days but on reading the hotel's policies it was clear that everything possible was being done to minimise the risks. We told ourselves that if we did not feel safe at any point we would simply abort the remainder of our stay.
I am happy to report that our stay was every bit as good as previously and the weather was better than last time too! The room was spotless, food sublime and all the promised policies were clearly in action not simply written out to satisfy a tick-box for a higher authority. As before, the staff were friendly without being intrusive and managed to retain an ambience of relaxation despite the restrictions in place. We are delighted to report that we felt safe enough to stay for the full duration of our booking and would happily return again. A huge thank you to everyone on the staff - stay safe and keep up the good work.

We stayed one night, dinner, bed and breakfast. A beautiful hotel, set in a lovely location. Everything was explained regarding check in etc in an email before we arrived. The hotel has only been re-open a few days since lockdown, and in our opinion they have everything really taken care of, hand sanitiser as you enter, staff wearing facemasks, the rooms are spotless, tea, coffee, toiletries etc are all in sealed bags in your room. You do have to pre book what you would like for dinner and breakfast but there is plenty of choice. The food was lovely, couldn't fault it and the service very good. Kevin and his team seem to work very hard in keeping the guests comfortable and at ease during these current times and are very friendly and polite. We will definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Hello Richard87, the last dinner sitting on Friday is at 8.30 pm. If you have any other queries, please contact the hotel directly. Kind regards.
Hi. We stayed in room 23 a lovely room on the ground floor. If you look at all the rooms on the hotel website it tells you which floor they are all on.
It’s from about 6pm. Due to Covid safety measures you are asked to choose your menu choices and time earlier in the day. No problem with this as it’s to keep everyone safe as they have reduced the number of tables. Beautiful hotel and food
