Detailed Reviews
This was our first trip away during the current situation, we have been to Scarborough numerous times, but this was our first visit to the Cumberland Hotel.
We went self drive, parking can be difficult, but we managed to find a space about 50 yards from the entrance , and the reception provides parking passes. The hotel appears to have been entirely refurbished. Public rooms are large and airy, with modern decor. However due to social distancing the bar was also used as a dining room, and the dining room as well as used for dinning was also used for entertainment. The staff where incredible, having to work twice as hard, table service only for drinks, no buffet breakfasts so waiter service for all courses (food was very good and there did not seem to be any reduction in choices )
There are sanitisers everywhere, one way systems, and the staff work hard to keep the place spotless.
Bedrooms again are modern, with plenty of storage, comfy bed, TV, hairdryer, kettle ( tea and coffee packs are obtained from reception on demand) large bathroom, we had a walk in shower. The Hotel is well located just a short walk from the town centre, or down to the South bay or the spa, but if you've never been to Scarborough before be prepared to walk up and down hills.

We stayed at this hotel at spring bank week do it was a busy week in Scarborough, we were booked in for six nights on a coach tour with alpha, I did pay extra for a room with a view and I have to say it was worth every penny it had good views over the town. The room was spotlessly clean as was the rest of the hotel, The food was good I have no complaints there and it was served to us by some very hard working staff who would always give a smile and if you wanted anything you only had to ask. I take the point of the previous review it would be nice to have a quiet lounge area but having said that we have to remember the social distancing aspect and all available space was taken up just to provide meals for everyone, once restrictions are lifted it would be a lot better and people would be able to move around, The entertainment on the whole was good I never went there expecting top class entertainment I personally think you have to weigh up what you're getting for the price you pay,for me it was good value because we stayed in a superb hotel and alpha did us proud with taking us there and trips out. I would highly recommend staying here.

Visited with an Alfa coach trip, and was not knowing what to expect. I am pleased to say that I was impressed with the way things were handled under the weird circumstances. Only people from the same room were allowed in the lift at a time. Masks had to be worn moving around the hotel, and all the staff were wearing them. We opted not to have anyone come in to clean the room during our stay r. No major problem though as clean towels could be obtained by leaving used ones in the corridor the same with rubbish. Any extra tea coffee or loo rolls could be obtained from reception. The dinning room was a different experience from what we are used to, we were in the entertainment room and all the tables were distanced from each other. Cutlery and crockery were delivered to your table on a tray for you to place on the table. Meals were served by a member of staff with a different member of staff clearing the table. The only problem with this was if the clearing staff were a bit slow you ended up eating your next course with dirty dishes on the table, which isn’t ideal. Our room was fine basic but clean . There was a good supply of hot water. We had a good internet connection in our room. And in our dinning room / entertainment room.Entertainment was of usual standard for an Alfa hotel. The food was good l ll can honestly say l never went hungry. Despite the staff having to walk further than usual it was always hot. The staff were all pleasant which helped us have an enjoyable stay.

Location is good, short walk to sea front and town. Steep road.
Clean room, had the option of a daily clean by the staff (could only be done 3 hours after we left the room), or just empty bins and towels and leave outside room daily, which we did. Had to get toiletries, milk sugar coffee etc toilet rolls from reception when needed.
The lounge had been turned into a second dining room to accommodate distancing and we were allocated a table which we had to use during our stay, so had to sit at the same table for meals and also if we wanted a drink. Had to wear a mask if we weren't having a drink. No entertainment, not even background music, no bingo or quiz as indicated, no atmosphere, dreadful. The other dining room had all this but we weren't allowed to go in there even though we payed the same as them! Good job the weather was good but after walking round all day didn't always feel like walking round after dinner, which was 7.15 pm (which was too late) or it meant sitting at the dining table or in your room!
The food was very good and the staff did their best in very difficult circumstances. All cutlery, crockery and condiments were wrapped individually and given to us each on a separate tray.
Cases out at 7 am as usual and had to be out of the room for 8 am but breakfast wasn't til 9.15 am! (again quite late).
I am told by regulars that the hotel is usually very good and I am sure it is, but this Covid thing has really put a dampener on things. I really don't think that anyone who was there will be booking another holiday until things get back to normal. We expected restrictions, but not that many.

Firstly, I think The Cumberland needs to get it's lift fixed asap, as the vast majority of guests seemed to be over 70. The lady I care for was put in a room which had a leaking toilet and a shower door which would not close. After using the toilet once and having to clean up the filthy toilet water, she discovered the shower door would not close. They said they knew about it so why put somebody in that room ? So being unable to then shower or use the toilet again we requested a move. 6 hours later we eventually got moved upstairs. Rooms we were moved to were absolutely fine. Cleaning every day if you require. Food was great, however, 3 of the 7 days it seems nobody was serving our table and we had to keep asking to be served. On the other 4 days we were served by a really nice, hard working young lady who is a credit to the hotel. On one day the group on the table next to us actually got up and left the dining room because nobody would serve them breakfast. There is entertainment on 6 evenings a week which is reasonably good. Bingo also on. There is far more right than wrong with this hotel, but there is certainly room for improvement, especially with the dining room service. This is simply due to a lack of staff I would say.

The hotel followed the covid guidance and with the breakfast area the tables were distanced and you were waited on with the food the waiters worked extremely hard, efficiently and politely so a big shout out to them. The lady on reception when we checked in was very helpful and welcoming, she was surprised when she found out it was our first visit to Scarborough.
The room was average size but too warm, I would find this uncomfortable in the summer months

Travelled with Alpha for seven day break. Check-in was speedy & luggage delivered promptly to room.
Room was clean, reasonable size, could hear sounds from other rooms, but to be expected in an older building. The only real problem was noise from the Smokers area, several floors below us. Loud talking sometimes after 11pm & twice before 6am!
The hotel was clean, very well ventilated . The staff were really pleasant & helpful & all wore face masks. Robert in the dining room, deserves a special mention
Food was great, good choice and ample portions.
Excellent location, ideal for quiet level evening stroll, with sea views
Looking forward to a return visit

Before we arrived at the Cumberland hotel we knew the lift was out of order.
As we were on the second floor it was a bit of a marathon going up the stairs particularly when you are older. However on arrival the staff carried our cases to our room which was 215 and we much appreciated this. The room was quite spacious, very clean and nicely furnished. It was cleaned every day and the beds made.Clean towels provided when required. The shower was excellent but you had to keep an eye on the temperature as water was very hot. The service in the dining room was excellent as was the three course dinner each night with a great selection. As we were there in March we also got a free drink each night. The entertainment was first class and finished at 10.30 each night. Bingo was also played each night. I would highly recommend The Cumberland fir a first class stay.

Just returned from an excellent 7 day holiday with Alpha Travel. Everyone so helpful. The food was lovely, no one should ever complain about being hungry after the delicious meals served with a smile by our waiter Robert. Even the Vegetarian in our group had a choice of enjoyable meals. Our twin room on the top floor was a good size , the single was much smaller but again adequate for one person.
As this was our second visit to the Cumberland Hotel we did not make use of the included excursions, but chose to do our own bus rides & many nearby coastal walks.
The only complaint, was the inconsiderate person in a top floor room. Whenever they entered their room, they switched on their television full blast, which even included very late night. It could be heard out in the corridor & drowned out the sound of the television in the adjoining single room. Maybe the hotel could ask people to consider their neighbours when turning on their televisions!!
