Went for a birthday dinner, table got ignored not offered any drinks beyond sitting down .. had to get up half way through mains to ask for drinks. Waitress we asked for drink menus never returned, asked for water never returned. Requests to acknowledge birthday pre made by my husband to make the night special ... ignored. paid more attention to a table of 5 left a minimal impact on us, mediocre experience - food nice - ambiance 0 - service -100. Was paying £32 a mains - would have expected excellent service and experience and didn't deliver. Best part emailed management 4 days ago now and have called twice no response. No customer focus - wont ever go back far better places to eat and spend money in ! really ruined a birthday surprise.

We stayed at Greyfriars in January to celebrate my wife's birthday. Having stayed twice before we knew we would enjoy our four day break. This time we booked the Rector's suite having previously stayed in the Elisabeth suite and the Venetian suite. There is something special about Greyfriars. With only 26 rooms it always feels exclusive. The staff can make or break a stay in any hotel and they definitely made our stay relaxing and comfortable. We dined in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed a good quality meal worthy of it's Michelin recommendation. We will be booking again and are looking forward to another special break.

It’s wasn’t a busy day when I visited and was disappointed that the service was slow. The table next to us was visited for clearing 3 times before it was finally tidied. We were not offered extra of anything and although the sandwiches were absolutely fresh and delicious (well done) the cake selection was very poor. The large lurid green macaron was without flavour or substance and I felt it was not handmade. The chocolate brownie had a very strange textured jelly top. I did not enjoy this and I could not determine the flavour. The cheesecake was ok but not outstanding and the mini mince pie was the best of the bunch with very good pastry! Most surprising we’re the scones. Although quite small, they’re were warm and good textured but one small dish of cream and one small dish of jam between two of us. Come on! It was not worth just shy of £26 per head. I really feel taken advantage of! Shame on you!

Gorgeous place! Exceptionally clean and beautifully decorated, we stayed in a junior suite for the “romance package” which included a three course meal but we decided to choose the ala carte menu at a slightly extra cost, we’ve stayed in a few luxury hotels but this was the best so far, we had the Colchester seafood cocktail followed by 8 oz fillet steak ( and the best “chips” ever) and the pigeon followed by beef wellington, too full for dessert we decided on the cheeseboard as room service later on in the evening, the staff were wonderful! Very welcoming and nothing too much trouble, the junior suite was spacious and had a beautiful marble bathroom with everything we needed, and breakfast was exactly what we was expecting after the delicious meal the night before, highly recommended this place! We will definitely be back, and such wonderful value for money too

We decided to have a midweek night away and go shopping in Colchester and tried The Greyfriars Hotel - what a fabulous experience! Car park was not clearly signposted, but soon found - plenty of parking at the rear of the hotel with a stunning and massive tree and outside terrace - we must go back in the Summer! All aspects of this hotel were fantastic - service, staff, room facilities - massive and comfortable bed and bathroom to die for, bar, dining room and excellent standard and presentation of food and service in the restaurant. Excellent attention to detail at all levels - we will definitely return to this absolute gem.
