Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Grand Hotel in Llandudno offers a picturesque setting highly praised for its proximity to the pier and bay, though the hotel's atmosphere receives mixed reviews, with some guests enjoying the nostalgic charm and others deeming it outdated. While many visitors commend the stunning sea views from their rooms, several suggest that the rooms could benefit from refurbishment and better upkeep.
The service stands out as both commendable and critiqued, with reports of both friendly and unprofessional conduct. Amenities and entertainment options are seen as limited by some, but the location often compensates for these shortcomings.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed for six nights at the Grand Hotel. It would probably be fair to describe the ambience of the hotel as one of *memories of past splendour*. Like many hotels of its vintage, it seems reminiscent of a Victorian past struggling to adapt to a changing tourist economy. Much of the contemporary clientele seemed to be coach parties. The decor is quite old fashioned. That said, the location overlooking Llandudno Bay is excellent and the hotel is easily accessible. It seems well adapted for disabled travellers with an access ramp at the front door and two lifts. It was also well equipped for Covid, with hand sanitiser readily available and clear instructions. Check-in was quick and efficient, though we managed to sneak in just ahead of a coach party which might have made it a longer process.
Due to public health regulations in Wales at the time of our stay, housekeeping do not service the rooms. You leave your used towels outside the door and replacement towels are left in their place in a sanitised bag. Our replacement towels were provided on three days out of five. On one occasion they had been collected but no replacements left (of course it might be that other guests had helped themselves while we were out) and on another day the used towels were not collected. We didn't bother reporting this, as at the end of the corridor was a trolley with fresh towels in sanitised bags so we just helped ourselves rather than bothering reception.
There have been some adverse comments about the breakfast in other reviews. First, let me say that the *rude Chinese waiter* mentioned in some reviews was not in evidence. The Chinese waiter who served us was exceptionally polite and very quick in bringing our breakfasts. The buffet is suspended due to Covid, so you order what you want in way of a cooked breakfast. They also bring toast and tea or coffee to the table. Currently no breakfast cereals *due to Covid* (presumably individual small variety packs are outside their budget) though some guests brought their own packs of cereals and just asked for a bowl and milk. One thing that can't be attributed to Covid, however, was the absence of orange juice. Each day we were offered apple juice and were told that they had *run out* of orange juice. They'd run out of orange juice on the Tuesday morning and were still out of it the following Sunday.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast tariff so did not have the evening meal, and we didn't partake in the evening entertainment, which seemed to include bingo every night, followed by either a variety show or a quiz. Allowing for the Covid situation, the hotel offered reasonable value for money.
The check-in and restaurant (breakfast) staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

We were told to check in from 4pm which we did, but the reception area got quite busy as everyone wanted to check in at the same time, plus people were coming in and out. We were given tea and coffee etc in a plastic bag as well as a small box of toffees. There was hand sanitizer in reception and throughout the hotel. The door to our room had a seal on to say that it had been cleaned, and we had a letter given to us to say that our room wouldn’t be cleaned for the duration of our stay (4 nights) due to COVID reasons. If we wanted clean towels, we were to leave them outside the rooms, and fresh ones would be left outside the door.
The room was clean and did it’s job, although the doors to the balcony were pretty sticky (we were in room 131) and hard to lock back up.
The only breakfast that was being served in the mornings was a cooked breakfast and there was toast and yogurt on offer as well, so no cereals, fruit etc due to COVID, we were told. There were cold and hot drinks which you could help yourselves to. The tables were decently spaced, but breakfast did get quite busy, with a long queue for the cooked breakfast which was being served by the chef on his own. We also had dinner there in the evenings which again was served by the chef, apart from the soup which was served to us on arrival if we wanted it. The menu was on display just outside the dining room, so we knew what was being served that evening which was starters and a choice of main meal including a vegetarian option, and a choice of a pudding. The food was ok, but there was a fish option twice during our stay, would have liked it to be more varied.
There was no WI FI in our room, you had to go downstairs for that. The bar area near the reception wasn’t open, we had to go downstairs if we wanted a drink. You have to pay cash in the downstairs bar, as they cannot get card facilities. The atm wasn’t working either. There is no car park at the hotel, you just have to take pot luck at parking near the hotel, which everyone wants to do for parking near the pier, or to access The Great Orme.
On the whole it wasn’t bad, I think it’s just trying to hold on to the old fashioned decor of its day, but I think it really needs a bit of an overhaul, especially with getting better WI FI access.

I would have given this 1 star if we did not have a sea view. The room was tired, all furniture was scuffed or damaged. The tiles in the bathroom were black in between, the toilet roll holder hanging off the wall, the balcony rusty and had weeds. The lobby was dirty and old, main stairs filthy and not been vacuumed for months by the looks of it. The breakfast was horrendous, cheapest beans, re-hydrated eggs and the worst coffee I have had the misfortune to have. On the bright side, as I said the view from the room was amazing for sunrise, the staff, although a bit rough and ready, were helpful and attentive. It’s a shame as the location of the hotel is excellent and if they tidied it up (2-300 pounds per room to freshen it up) it could be a good hotel.
Ps no car park and parking was nightmare, closest I managed to get was 0.5 miles from the hotel!

We arrived 23 August so during covid. No one apart from us wore a mask in reception while having a lengthy wait to check in.Sanitation stations are at entrance, indeed lots all around.
We had room 336 overlooking the Orme and a small balcony a bonus. However our room was dirty and stains on carpet and mould all over. Bed was clean pillows uncomfortable, but that is personal taste.
Our bathroom was mouldy and had a leaking toilet, we reported this and someone did Try to fix it but it still leaked. Because the floor was so wet it became unusable as it was wetting slippers through and dangerous in bare feet.
Because of covid rooms are not cleaned while in use so you just go to reception for clean towels. I don't see this as a problem.
Staff are brilliant doing the best they can.
Food reasonable, full English breakfast that is plated up for you at buffet by a chef wearing mask and gloves. Evening meal soup and bread served at table as us dessert, main course you are served again by chef at buffet counter, not much choice but again we are amid this virus.
One thing I didn't like was tables only wiped with damp cloth no sanitising then cutlery put on the table, perhaps on serviettes they supply instead would be better.
When weather turned a little it rained into our room as balcony door was very loose and wouldn't lock properly so we decided to end our break 2 days early something I have never done before. We did ask to be moved but we were refused but with rain on bed and almost unusable bathroom we had no choice. Below are a few pics of covid clean room and toilet after 5 mins of drying floor we had to leave towels down, dust on door at least quarter of inch thick soever cleaned. If a cheaper hotel I would say you get what you pay for but at over £100 a night I expect clean

We stayed for four (4) nights on the fifth (5th) floor. Twin room. Old style furniture and fittings but in keeping with the style and age of the hotel.
As it's a fifth (5th) room you have great views.. slightly smaller windows as it's the top floor.
Clean bathroom & bedroom . Value for money and centrally located in Llandudn near to the promenade and restaurants,
Would return to this quaint old building as its really enjoyable to stay in a place that hasn't be wrecked by the 21st century. helpful staff at reception.
Due to coronavirus covid-19 all items for tea and coffee were given individually in sealed bags for each guest.
All other items was sealed and sanitised TV remote etc...!
With hand sensitiser gel stations at each lift on all four floors and reception area

The room had no ventilation because the balcony doors were sealed. This may have been due to health and safety because the metal frame of the balcony was corroded and also due to the room next door sharing the same balcony, which we only realised when the man next door wandered in front of our patio door. His door mustn't have been sealed? There is no air conditioning in the room.
The beds were extremely hard, so very uncomfortable to sleep on like sleeping on a board.
The walls are very thin, you can hear next door. Also creaky floor boards so you can hear people walking along on the same floor and the one above.
Our room was clean, seemed to be freshly painted with new carpets but what it really needed was new fittings on taps, showers heads, better beds, restoration of the doors and balcony.
There is no maid service during your stay to replenish towels, toilet roll, soap, tea, coffee etc. These must be requested from the reception.
Breakfast is table service only, with a full English breakfast available. I'm not sure why there isn't fruit, yogurt or cereal? This may be a covid19 decision, but too limited for the price. The staff in the restaurant were pleasant and worked very hard accommodating all tables as fast as they possibly could.
The hotel location is great! It's right by the beach, pier, Happy Mount park and cable car ride to the Great Orme. It just need Britiannia Hotels to spend some money on it and make it grand again!

In it's heyday this beautiful building, with enviable views, would have been lovely but it is far from grand today. We booked through lastminute.com, prepay, no cancellation. On arrival the hotel smelt of stale frying. There are many, tatty, "not allowed" type notices. On arrival(@12.15) we were told our rooms would be ready at 1 O'clock and invited to wait in the entertainment room. The furniture was in a very poor state, worn and torn. We decided to explore and get our bearings, only to discover that our rooms were in fact already prepared! Sadly these rooms were VERY basic and shabby, both had stained carpets and throws(we kept our socks on rather than walking in our bare feet). Supplies on the hospitality tray were plentiful.😊 There seemed to be a large percentage of residents of whom, we would not have been surprised to find, the taxpayer was paying for their accommodation. En-suite facilities were even more basic and grubby-none of our party felt able to take a shower because of cleanliness concerns. Towels were good. Buffet breakfast was fine with a reasonable choice of cereals, porridge, traditional English hot breakfast and toast. It was a rare surprise to have fried eggs with a runny yoke, well done chef! Adjacent to the hotel is a large area of derelict landslip which we assumed to be a recent event however upon speaking to hotel staff, we found that the "slip" had occurred 27 years ago!!! With hindsight we should have complained. Sorry we would not stay again 😔

What an horrendous experience. We arrived for our 2 night stay just before 4.00pm and were asked to wait outside until dead on 4 so as not to clutter the reception area. When we got to our room we discovered there wasn't any water. When we enquired about this we were told that a plumber had been summoned. We were hoping to go to the restaurant for dinner but it was closed so we took a long tour of the town and found that allthe eateries were takeaway or eat outside. I'm afraid we are not alfresco diners so we went back to the hotel. With no other alternative we were forced to order dinner from Just Eat, which I have never done before. We later enquired about breakfast and were told that the dining room wasn't open because of Covid and that we would have to go out or order in. Why were we not made aware of all this when we booked. That night we went to bed and the noise was terrible. There were people sat not far from our door talking very loudly until very late. In the end I had to go to the door a ask them to be quiet. Also the door to the corridor banged shut every time someone went through it. When we woke up the following morning after very little sleep we decided to go home as we could not imagine spending another night under that roof. I shall be writing to Britannia Hotels and asking them for a refund for the extra night. Please avoid at all costs.

This hotel is old tired and not in good shape.
Room (319 sea view) was not in good shape. Cabinets falling apart, carpets dirty, mould in bathroom, windows so dirty I couldn’t see the sea view I paid extra for.
Stayed during COVID-19. Did not see one cleaner, public area carpets very dirty, did not see anyone cleaning things like lift buttons or hand rails. Noticed a screwed up bit of paper on the stairs, it stayed there for our 3 day stay.
Water went off for 4-5 hours one day. When complaining lots of people checking out and moving to other hotels lots of unhappy people. Felt very unsafe from COVID during my stay.
Very tired hotel, not in good condition staff not good and not many of them.

Booked a budget weekend break and didn't expect a lot for the price I paid! Very pleasantly surprised. Although hotel is old it is immaculately kept, very clean and well serviced. All meals were superbly cooked and served buffet style. Unlike many buffet style meals these meals were hot, served on hot plates and not a sign of being stored in the containers for ages. Entertainment was available each evening but I cannot comment on that as I was in bed early after being out walking all day. Only down side to the hotel is that it doesn't have a car park. Disabled parking on the road but very limited spaces and that may cause problems for the less able.
