Scandic Byporten is celebrated for its spotless rooms and commendable cleanliness, with a bustling lobby that's perfect for mingling, though the vibrancy may extend to some noise due to its proximity to the train station. The rooms, while cozy and functional, are noted by many to be compact. Service is generally regarded as friendly and accommodating, but there have been occasional reports of unprofessionalism. The central location is a highlight, offering guests convenience and ease for exploration. While some guests consider the room size and average breakfast as drawbacks, the hotel is still seen as providing good value.

Excellent modern hotel at Oslo's main train station. Small well appointed rooms with windows that open for fresh air! No view from our room but you are in the centre of town! Great reception staff and well themed bar area with excellent bar. V good buffet breakfast included. Great option for visiting oslo or catching an early train or flight.

Very conveniently located in the same building as the Oslo Sentrum station, so there's no need to even get cold or wet if you've caught a train from Oslo airport. Rooms are spacious and modern. Beds were OK comfort-wise, but nothing special. Room was slightly too warm with no temperature control so sleep wasn't great - windows do open but traffic noise too much to make this a cooling option. There was a Nespresso maker in the room, plus free coffee at reception, for all coffee addicts out there. The TV even had an extension connector for HDMI and USB plugins - a small but much appreciated touch that many other hotels could learn from. Breakfast was included and was a reasonably extensive buffer in the Egon restaurant next door, although the hot items kept running out, these were replaced when prompted. Would definitely stay again if I needed a convenient hotel to stay in for a night in Oslo, but would probably look further afield if I was staying any longer.

This hotel is in the perfect location . If arriving by the airport train , exit the main entrance facing Jernbanetorget , the hotel entrance will be on right side . You will see the restaurant Egon and the circular revolving door . Enter there and the reception will be through the doors on the right . I was in room # 555 for 5 nights facing the square. The room was nice had enough room for my belongings and was equipped with a hot water kettle, windows that open and hot water in the shower. The breakfast buffet at the adjoining restaurant Egon is one of the best . Tourist Information center close by and easy to use bus and tram . Easy to walk to most sites . I would recommend this hotel .

This hotel is attached to the main Oslo train station, and sits above a large shopping mall in the middle of the city.

When you exit the station into the main square, look to your right and you'll see the hotel sign above. You can enter from the square without going into the mall. There is also an entrance/exit to the station without going outside.

Check in was ok (pleasant enough staff overall) although one was a touch snobby (these types should be ignored).

The room was nice. The view was GREAT!! So so beautiful looking out over the square and out to the bay. The bed was comfortable and the room was an OK size for one. Tiny bathroom, but good shower.

The hotel would get a 5 star if not for this dumb policy. No early check-in's (even for a small fee) ALL hotels do this, its ridiculous. Clearly many people are arriving on overnight flights, since the luggage room/office was filled to capacity (over 60 bags)...the lobby was full of people waiting, and apparently they were not full the night before.

The area is perfect for sightseeing and shopping. Many food places in the mall, or next door in the station/mall building. There is also a giant old world food hall 3 mins from the hotel down the steps off the square.

The train to/from OSL airport leaves directly from this station: The train is fairly expensive, but luckily you have the option of the overpriced nonstop express, or a much much cheaper local train that only makes 1 stop (hah) is comfortable, still fast - adding about 5 mins to the journey. Plan ahead and understand the ticket/platform layout - a touch confusing.

I highly recommend the hotel (since the early check in issue was its only flaw) not bad.

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in such a detailed way, it is highly appreciated both by us and future guests. Great to read that you overall had a great experience although it is of course saddening to read that the experience wasn't flawless and beyond expectations, something we strive for everyday. Most hurtful to read was that we didn't manage to give you more than an ok check-in. With regards to the early check-in, we do have that opportunity if you prebook it via our own websites, you will then, against a small fee, be guaranteed the first room ready. I am unsure what day of the week you arrived but Fridays and Saturdays are typically challenging days with early check ins as the previous guests have used the rooms until 12.00. Nonetheless, I am sincerely sorry that this affected the overall experience. Hoping to see you again! Warm regards, Mikael Pohjonen General Manager

1 min walk to the central train station, three minutes to the central bus station (where all the long distance buses leave from) and bus- and tram stops right outside.
The location can hardly be beaten for public transport. Within ten minutes walk you will reach many of the citys sights.
The price for a standard room is quite reasonable compared to similar hotels in the area. Our room was very quiet. Nice bathroom, and good wi-fi. The room might be on the small side for two people with a lot of luggage, but we managed three nights without problem. Staff are professional and service minded.
Breakfast is good and served in a nice environment with good views.

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay with us, it is highly appreciated. Great to see that you had such a lovely stay with us! With regards to the room size, our standard rooms are indeed space efficient, something we are doing our best to inform about during the booking process with both pictures, text and square meter size. I apologize if this information didn't reach you. To maximize the experience, my recommendation is to book a superior room, these are almost double in size and will hopefully give you a 5/5 experience :) Hoping to see you soon again! I had low expectations about the Scandic Byporten. It’s ranked in the middle range of Oslo hotels here on TA, and the hotel’s website is not very informative and mostly just states it has a central location.

Despite all that, I was pleasantly surprised. It is in a central location, right on a big public plaza next to the central train station. You are very close to public transport here, but windows kept out the noise.

Our room had a nice view of the Oslofjord, Opera House, and some downtown buildings. It was certainly the best view we enjoyed at any of the four hotels where we stayed in Norway.

The room was small, but no smaller than those found elsewhere in the country. There was a water kettle in the room, which was certainly a better way to make tea than the small machines found in other hotels.

The lobby generates a positive ambience at times. Decent music is played most of the time, and they sell drinks from a small lobby bar. At times, quite a few people were sitting in the lobby, making it a fun place to spend some time (at least compared to most hotel lobbies).

If you need to shop, the hotel is connected to a very large shopping mall. You eat breakfast across the hall at a restaurant, which was somewhat cramped in layout but functional and offered a fine breakfast.

On the morning of our checkout, there was some kind of communication problem with hotel staff. Our room had been pre-paid through a travel agent. The hotel was very concerned about collecting our voucher when we arrived. Upon checkout, however, there was no record of this in their computer system. The clerk asked for a credit card to pay for our entire stay. Fortunately, I had a backup copy of the voucher on my phone, and was able to email that. She acknowledged the hotel’s mistake and there was no issue. She did her job. Keep backup copies!

In a world of high expectations and disappointing experiences, this was the opposite. This is certainly not a luxurious or fancy hotel, but it exceeded my expectations. Their website does not do it justice.

Five of us traveled to Oslo for half term and stayed at the Scandic Byporten.
Our two rooms were initially very attractive. We used the facilities in the rooms and the hotel generally and were happy with them. The larger room, which we also used during the day was a “Superior”. The smaller, almost opposite and only used at night, was a “Standard”. The hotel claims to be child friendly but the rooms are anything but. It was a full time job to control our toddler. There are no shelves or cupboards out of toddler reach. The door cannot be locked other than by pulling up the inside handle, and a toddler can reach to pull it down again and get into the corridor. A toddler can also reach to pull out the key card from the electric supply slot, plunging the room into darkness. Finally a toddler can lock the bathroom door from the inside and then not know how to get out, while happily playing with water at potentially hot temperatures or the contents of parents’ wash bags.
A toddler can also reach much of the breakfast buffet, although that proved easier to keep under control (most of the time).
The hotel doors will open automatically when approached, no size limit. It would be possible to fit a sensor that only opened if the approaching thermal mass was larger than a preset limit. Thus keeping small children and pets on their designated side, in or out. Our toddler was able to get out of the building and/or to the nearest toy shop in Byporten Shopping.
In case you are wondering he is 2 years old.
I can recommend this hotel to adults, older children and children not yet able to walk!

Hi Tim, Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your stay with us, it is highly appreciated. Having a 2 year old daugther myself, I would say it is a full time job to control her regardless of the points you mention :) When marketing ourselves as child-friendly we focus more on the features of i.e. giving a gift to the children upon check-in, having child books available, shuffleboard and in the larger holidays (easter, summer and Christmas) having a children's corner available. I regret deeply that you interpreted it as how the actual building is constructed. Hopefully we will see you back without the toddler or when he's older :) Warm regards, Mikael Pohjonen General Manager

The room was cramped and poorly furnished. There were no shelves, drawers or wardrobe, just a clothes rail with three coat hangers so we had to keep everything in our cases. There was a night table on only one side of the bed.

We were staying for two nights but the chambermaid neglected to service our room on the second day, something we only discovered when we returned in the evening and it was too late to do anything about it but report it the next morning.

The hotel’s wifi doesn’t work properly and you are expected to go through some rigmarole online to fix it yourself. One of the hotel’s few redeeming features is the helpfulness of the staff on reception who did this for me when I asked.

The hotel is very well located and we had a decent view from our window. The quality of the breakfast is pretty good although, as another reviewer has commented, the restaurant is awkwardly laid out and hideously decorated in a would-be “quirky “ style.

Hi Simon, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, we need guests like you to be able to improve ourselves. It however hurts me genuinely that you left us with such a bad feeling. I don't know what went wrong with the cleaning but I will make sure to bring this forward so that it wont happen to our future guests. We are equally frustrated about the update that Apple has done recently that is affecting some Iphone-users. Unfortunately the work-around with going via another website is currently the only solution we have been offered. It is nice to see that my colleagues did everything in their power to lessen the frustration around this. With all these hiccups I fully understand that we might not be your first choice when returning to Oslo, however I know that we can do better and I hope we get the chance to show it to you. If so, send me an email to mikael.pohjonen@scandichotels.com and I will do my utmost that your next stay meet your expectations far better than this one. Hoping to hear from you! We were super impressed by the friendly staff, the cleanliness of the hotel and the proximity to the train and site seeing that we wanted to do on our last minute trip to OSLO. We chose this hotel because we had and early flight to Stockholm and it had better reviews than another comparable hotel in the area. We joined the Scandic Loyalty Program upon booking and we were very glad that we did. When we arrived at the hotel a little early after arriving on the train from the Oslo Airport, we went directly to the hotel (literally a couple minute walk from the train station) to see if we could drop off our luggage or if possible check in early if they had a room available. Fortunately they did have a room available for an early check in, and because of the loyalty program, we didn't have to pay the minor extra charge for checking in early. Staff was so accomodating and friendly and the room was super comfortable. The shower was also great! Great water pressure and super hot water. Loved the decor in the lobby. After sightseeing, my husband and I hung out on the very comfortable couches for about and hour just listening to the music in the lobby and reading our Kindle books. Excellent first experience with the Scandic brand and we will definitely book with Scandic again in the future if our travels bring us in their market.

The reseption is very nice, the people working there are really helpful, and the rooms are made in a way that they seems bigger then they are. Very practical. The bathroom is tiny but excelente shape - really good solution. But , the cleaning is terrible! Never had a hotelroom that felt so dirty in my life!
The beds are a nightmare! They are worn down and awful to sleep in, and consists of two 65 cm or so beds stucked together. You roll to the middle and the beds goes apart! The madrass is hard as stone with no feathers anymore. The pillow is a hard thing, not possible to shape and is a nightmare! I had to use my jacket as pillow to be able to sleep! So buy new pillows and beds, and do some propre cleaning and this hotel will be exselente!

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. Great to see that my colleagues did such a good impression on you! We need guests like you to be able to improve ourselves, something that is clearly the case after reading about your room experience. I would so grateful if you could send me an email to mikael.pohjonen@scandichotels.com with your information so that we can get the chance to shift the beds and pillows in the room you had. We are continously buying new beds and pillows so luckily not all rooms are that bad. When it comes to the cleaning it is with true pain I am reading about the poor service, it should of course not be like that, I will make sure to rectify the obvious lacks in our routines. I fully understand that your trust in us has weakened, I do however know that we can do better and I am hoping we will get the chance to show it to you one day. Hoping to hear from you! Hi - sorry I can’t answer about the air-con. We stayed in February when it wasn’t an issue for us. Check out the summer temperatures in Oslo to see what they are likely to be. The hotel is right by the station and bus and tram stops, so it was busy outside at all times. I wasn’t worried at any time during our short stay there. Standard rooms in the Scandic are small - fine for an overnight stay but I wouldn’t want to stay there any longer. What size room have you booked and how long do you plan to stay? The hotel is directly accessible from the station which is a huge bonus. Hope this helps.
