Thon Hotel Opera is often celebrated for its prime location near Oslo's central train station and local attractions, making it a strategic choice for sightseeing enthusiasts. While opinions on value vary, many guests appreciate the variety of breakfast options and well-equipped rooms, though some desire more basic amenities.
The hotel's cleanliness and service frequently receive compliments, with the staff's friendliness being a highlight. However, guests have called out that some rooms might feel outdated and small, despite the overall welcoming atmosphere that mirrors the nearby Opera House.

Detailed Reviews
I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights in January 2020. The location is extremely convenient, right next to the train station and a few minutes away from the main shopping area and several local attractions. The hotel is beautifully decorated inside, the lounge area is impressive. The bedroom is small but very nicely decorated and fitted will all necessary amenities, including tea and coffee facilities and Molton Brown toiletries. The breakfast and lunch were excellent, buffet style, with great choice of hot and cold food. We used one of the meeting rooms and it was also very good, with nice refreshments available throughout. Finally, I experienced amazing service at the restaurant (with the waiter offering to bring tea and coffee when he noticed we had not got any), meeting rooms (where the staff member ran after me to the lift to deliver the iPad charger I had forgotten) and reception (where the staff member kindly offered to make restaurant bookings for us): extremely attentive staff that went over and above to cater for our needs. I will certainly come back next time I am in Oslo!

Not only is it a very modern hotel but it is the most conveniently located one for both tourists and business travellers. Just opposite the opera house and the water front and next to the railway station, it was very convenient for us to take a train to the airport with our luggage without having to worry about a cab.
The rooms are nice and cozy and the breakfast was quite elaborate. The hotel houses some amazing piece of art created by an English artist. Water in the whole of Norway is potable and one can drink straight from the tap. That’s a big blessing to the citizen and even visitors to this country.

I have stayed here before and I come back not only because of the central placement but also thanks to the very professional and service minded staff. The breakfast is very good and so nicely and clean presented. Even in these times with the corona virus I felt very safe to eat from the buffet. The staff always greet you and make you feel appreciated. The business rooms are nice. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. In my opinion a good choice of hotel for your stay in Oslo.

After staying at a hostel at the beginning of the trip, it was worth it to splurge for the location and delicious breakfast for our last night. We rolled our bags right over from the airport train and after the quick check-in, were in our room in no time (less than 20 minutes after the train arrived). The room was incredibly clean and bright, big enough for two travellers and their bags and we saved over an hour by not fussing around with tram, etc.
The breakfast is excellent - a huge array of choice with fresh ingredients and the option to make some sandwiches for lunch, which we did. They have an excellent coffee machine and a friendly staff member to show you just how to use it. Given the cost of restaurants/food in Norway, the breakfast is excellent value, included with the room.
The room was quiet. Ice machine in hallway. Could do with a few spoons to stir the coffee/tea in room. Staff were friendly and efficient and there's a 'left luggage' area, which enabled us to sightsee after check-out, without having to drag our bags around.
They do host the Viking Cruises, so the other guests were a bit older and all seemed to crowd the hotel restaurant at once. It seemed like a long wait with only 2 servers, etc so we ate outside the hotel in the evening (which wasn't great). A tip would be to get a sandwich/pizza from the bakery next to the hotel or walk over to the water area and go to Salt for some atmosphere. Avoid the tram area.

Located near the waterfront, the Thon doesn’t look much from the outside but is understated cool inside with a huge reception and immaculate contemporary rooms. We had a superior room on the 8th floor with a view of the square, well soundproofed and quiet at the weekend. Most notable were the staff who without exception were so welcoming and friendly, even during busy breakfasts. The breakfast has every imaginable option, too much to list including gluten and dairy free options - you won’t go hungry! Location was great, right by the opera house and harbour, cathedral, palace and Acker Brygge shopping and restaurants all walkable with a bit of effort. Right by the central station too, so roll off your airport train right into the hotel. Recommended.

We were in Oslo for a three night mini break.
Location: Right beside the central station. As you arrive in the station from the airport just look for signs marked "Opera" it is literally right outside. Very convenient for central Oslo, airport trains, shopping, Opera House, local transport etc.
Reception: Smooth check in, always friendly and helpful when approached.
Room: Nicely furnished with a good bathroom. Mini bar fridge, ironing board and tea/coffee making facilities Most rooms do not have good views in this hotel due to its location. We were overlooking a multi story car park. The bed was very comfortable, very quiet, and the room was tidied every day by room service.
Breakfast: Served on level 3 in a large restaurant. Superb selection of food on offer. We did not eat other meals in the hotel as many restaurants are nearby.
Conclusion: Probably one of the best hotels in central Oslo. beautifully furnished and appointed, good staff, and an excellent breakfast. Highly recommended!

The hotel has a good cleaning policy: if the room does not need to be cleaned, you will receive a voucher for each day it is not cleaned. The hotel's restaurant is good, but the outdoor terrace needs a quick upgrade. The breakfast is luxury. Great location at the central station. The rating is lowered by the quality of the towels (you would expect more luxury towels and dressing gowns from a four-star hotel). There is room for improvement in sound insulation: the neighbor's alarm clock and small rattles can be heard in the room. Unfortunately, it is not possible to get twin beds in the superior room. The level of customer service is mostly good, especially the staff in the breakfast room are mostly professionals with right attitude.

Dear traveller10941, thank you for your contributions and feedback here on Tripadvisor. I am happy to hear that you had an overall nice stay with excellent breakfast and service. I agree that the outdoor terrace needs a facelift, which is planned to be done in august/september. Your feedback around towels and sound isolation is noticed and hopefully something we can change on our next facelift. enjoy the summer and hope to see you back soon .

This is a large hotel right next door to the train station and so easy to find if you’ve arrived by train.
Efficient reception team and secure ticketed luggage storage if you are too early for your room check in.
We had a twin bedded business room (no doubles available when I booked) which was fairly compact but there was enough room to put suitcases and the bathroom had a bathtub (always a positive for us).
The room was on the sixth floor and overlooked a lovely pedestrianised square with restaurants and the station taxi rank - however associated street noise was not an issue at all.
Very clean throughout the hotel. Beds very comfortable.
Extensive breakfast buffet, well organised, plenty of seating. Coffee pod machine takes a bit of navigating but we got there in the end!!!
The hotel restaurant bar on the ground floor shouldn’t be overlooked - we had two meals there (limited menu). Food was well presented, nice and hot and tasty.
Top tips in Oslo.
Rather than buy the expensive Fjord electric boat trip buy a travel ticket from the Ruter ticket office (we had a 24hr cheap as chips for zone 1). It will include the B1 Ferry from Akker Brygge that stops at a few of the islands. You get close up and you can get off or stay on. Much better views.
We used the same ticket to take the T Bane out to Holmenkollen where the ski jump is (stunning views across the city).
Free things to do - the two sculpture parks are a must. Quite different to each other. Allow at least 1.5hrs for each to appreciate the sculptures and their surroundings.
The view from the top of the Munch Museum is free to access as is the roof of the Opera house.
There are statues and sculptures around every corner in Oslo and the architecture is varying and interesting.

Dear TAH67, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback about your recent stay at Thon Hotel Opera. We appreciate your thoughtful comments and are pleased to hear that you enjoyed various aspects of your experience. Our location, adjacent to the train station, is indeed a major convenience for travelers, and we’re glad you found it easy to locate. Our reception team takes pride in their efficiency, and we’re delighted that our secure luggage storage was helpful during your early check-in. While we apologize for the limited availability of double beds, we’re glad you found the twin bedded business room comfortable. It’s wonderful to know that the room’s compact layout still allowed space for your suitcases and that the bathtub was a positive feature for you. We’re equally thrilled that you appreciated the cleanliness throughout the hotel and the comfort of our beds. Lastly, we’re pleased that you discovered our hotel restaurant bar on the ground floor. While the menu is limited, we strive to present well-prepared, hot, and tasty dishes. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated. Very disappointed with our 2 night stay . The hotel doesn’t need a sauna as the room was sweltering and despite calls to rectify the best they could offer was a small desk fan. We had to crack open a window for the entire stay letting in the noise and whatever bugs decided to visit . We didn’t have a functioning fridge , the drinks went in cold from the supermarket and came out at room temperature , warm, like really warm .
We could not figure out how to watch the free to air tv and there were no instructions apart from the chrome cast instructions on the screen which we couldn’t get past .
A number of other guests on our tour complained of the heat in their rooms so I don’t feel so lucky now that it was only me . I suggest the hotel stop being miserly and switch on the air conditioning for the place as I suspect this was the issue .
The only shining light was a superb breakfast , however the lack of sparkling water and the staff not willing to get some from the downstairs bar was annoying .
Over rated property and unless you enjoy sweating all through the night I wouldn’t bother . Should be 1 star but the breakfast gained it another star

Dear DownunderBob, Thank you for your rating and comment. We appreciate that you took the time to write a review after your stay. I'm sorry to read that your visit to our hotel didn't meet your expectations. Unfortunately, our hotel does not have air conditioning, but a ventilation system that regulates the temperature in the room. It is very unfortunate that it did not work properly during your stay. Regarding the fridge in the room, our staff should check the power outlet every day and that the fridge is functioning. I am sorry that we failed to do this during your stay. We will of course work to improve this routine. I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Thon Hotel Opera on a future occasion, and that your next stay will be more comfortable. I don't think you can, but you can easily buy it on the app and not worry about finding a place downtown.
Yes, the sofa in the business room can be used as a bed.
In Scandinavia it is common for people to share the same bed base but have individual covers. So the bed looks like it is two seperate beds in pictures but it is one one big bed .
Hope this helps
Hi. I can't recall - I think we had one king size bed.
