Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

this place is advertised as a "farm stay" however, the reality is it more like a great boutique hotel wonderful clean room and even better meals! Wines and bar akin to an international hotel friendly and entertaining hosts. (without being overbearing or intruding) many thanks David and Sue for a great stay! highly recommended

A perfect setting for a quiet break before the onslaught of Christmas. Peace and tranquility abound in delightful grounds and a home full of character. Past Presidents crew from Wellington.

One of the best travel experiences I have ever had, I highly recommend that your visit to New Zealand include at least a couple of night stay with Sue and Dave, our wonderful hosts at Mairenui Rural Retreat. They made us feel as though we were part of their family with wonderful conversation over gourmet meals, cooked by Sue. The location is pure magic. Set in the hills near Mangaweka it gives you an idea of what life is like for "real" farming New Zealanders. The Retreat is set on hundreds of acres of hilly farmland with a river running through it. We got to experience Dave working with his dog to move the sheep from meadow to meadow and the vet visiting for check ups on the horses, a special treat for us city dwellers. I am an avid bird watcher and got to see the beautiful and

Still a little gem tucked away in the hills east of Mangaweka, North Island, New Zealand, which rewards you for your hunting with its tranquillity. Delights include: Kereru, (NZ. Native Pigeon), swooping above us high, then deliberately stalling, followed by a downward glide, all seemingly for our pleasure. Weather was great on the first evening to set up our humble picnic table in front of the view. Hosts welcoming as ever…….so all in all: Great!……thank you Sue and David.

The hosts very very warm and courteous. It was fun to have a meal with them and exchange ideas, views and culture of our two countries. The location and setting was terrific. It could not have been better. Our best stay ever. I recommend at least two nights and a farm tour.

First up – we can only highly recommend this wonderful farm and its owners to you. Mairenui epitomises a kiwi back to nature olde world country experience. Time has stood still, with rutted access drive, original farmhouse villa, the old stable, and back to basics living. Every aspect of our accommodation was imbued with the character of settler life. But don’t expect a glossy magazine style – this experience is genuine farm pragmatism, and close to untouched. But the icing to this is the attention to the visual: delightful flowers, old carts, wagon wheels, bikes and interior decor. When it comes to creature comforts, it’s there, but in the context of honest farm life. Our hosts, while we stayed only one night as we passed through, were immediately generous and welcoming,

Our 3 night stay at Mairenui Rural Retreat was our first experience with real Kiwi hospitality and one we will always remember fondly. Sue and David (hosts & owners) welcomed us to their farm with friendliness and warmth beyond words. We were truly treated like family. Our time definitely exceeded all our expectations—Mairenui farm is an environment that is rich with things to see and do, from us waking with birds singing outside our Homestead room, to watching the horses and foals, to touring the farm with David in his Land Rover, seeing the wonderful stags in the back paddock, and witnessing David shear sheep, to enjoying delicious farm fresh home cooked meals prepared by Sue. Her cooking was outstanding and every evening meal was complete with generous wine selections and

I fell in love with this place from the first time I stayed there. The homestead resides in mature trees affording privacy and a very relaxing atmosphere. David and Sue (the owners) are exceptional hosts taking the time to introduce visitors to the farm if they wish and making every effort to make your stay enjoyable. I would recommend for couple wanting a romantic getaway or families who want to let their kids go crazy outside. The farm is located within 15 minutes of the Rangitiki river and approx 30 mins from the Ruahine Ranges.

“The Retreat” @ Mairenui Aptly named this country hideaway is found by turning east off State Highway #1 near to the stranded low-flying D3 cafe, as all Kiwi’s know we are in: Mangaweka. Almost straight away one senses a slowing down of pace, giving way to local traffic from one end of a narrow timber decked, truss beamed bridge. Whilst one waits for the local’s Ute to pass, a glimpse is caught of the modern Italian built viaduct for the mainline rail track peering from around the curve in the river. 20 minutes drive further up the road one enters a glad of 800-year-old Kahikatea, (white pine trees), and discovers a rustic house, (designed by now deceased Architect John Comensky) viz: “The Retreat.” Other reviewers have designed it as “hobbit” like, which indeed is

Stayed here for three nights and arrived early evening. The hosts had lit a fire for us for our arrival and we walked into this awesome lord of the rings style house with all sorts of nooks and crannies. No cell phone coverage which was even better. We did nothing but eat drink, go for walks and play tennis on the courts whilst being watched by sheep and a horse with her new foal. The hosts are lovely. Waking up in the morning listening to the only sound of birds mostly Tui's was great and a few sheep in the background. You can open your bedroom french doors and look out across the rolling hills whilst laying in bed.
