Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our 2 night stay at this beautiful rural retreat off the beaten tourist track was a highlight for our visitors from Canada. Perfect place to unwind, take a walk and read a book. Wonderful dinner with Sue and David who are generous and informative hosts that soon feel like friends. Will return whenever we can.

We (couple + 2 year old boy) stayed in the Villa for 3 nights, a grand old home. It's showing its age a bit but everything works and it's a beautiful old house. The highlight is the garden, with slide, tree house, old tractor and landrover, as well as farm animals next door, and basically everything to keep our boy happy outside all day. There is no TV, but hundreds of books and lots of kid's games.

Attended a staff retreat at Mairenui. Was a marvellous environment to relax and work productively with my colleagues. The welcome we received was marvellous with Matt and David ensuring we received the personal touch before David disappeared to do some Christmas duties. Sue, David, Matt and Leonie were consumate hosts - the food was great and everything was done to accommodate our groups needs. I was fortunate to have the "Retreat". Wonderful place to hang out in. Very easy to get to, 10 minutes off State Highway One or a picturesque drive up from Feilding via Kimbolton.

This is a retreat that suits the rural seeker, we stayed here during our honeymoon, the hosts David and Sue were outstanding. David treated us too a 4WD tour in his 1953 landrover, afterwards we enjoyed a round of tennis and walks in the area. The retreat was a wonderfully clean character building, and nothing beat curling up infront of the fire for the evening. Doesn't suit younger folk looking for a fast paced nightlife!

Our hosts started our visit with a personally made sign on the porch to welcome us, and this was the setting for rest of our stay, warm, friendly and welcoming, we stayed for a night in The Retreat, a wonderful setting among ancient old trees that must have a story of there own to tell, the fire in our retreat was already running hot, just lovely. Being our wedding anniversary, I chose the full three course dinner option and dinner with our hosts was outstanding, the wonderful warm and friendly setting, great conversation, beautifully prepared and delicious food. Thank you David & Sue.

Stayed for one night in the homestead on a weeks tour of the north island after a few days of very average hotel and motel accommodation. What a wonderful experience in a beautiful location comfortable rooms and the most charming hosts. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner and breakfast and the worst part was having to leave the next morning we could have stayed a week. Thank you Sue and David for a wonderful time we plan to return!

Decided I needed to get out of Wellington for the long weekend. Chose Mairenui Rural Retreat at Mangaweka as Mangaweka recommended by workmate and I had never been to Mangaweka before. Great weekend. Obliging and friendly hosts, Sue and David. If it's rustic you like than the Retreat fits the bill. Sure is a "hobbit-like" house so quirky. Very private, lovely trees and views. Loved the big bedroom for the expansive view across the farmland from the bed, and equally loved the bath with outlook of trees and sky. Had to light the fire on the first night, as our unseasonal cool summer weather created a chill. All set ready for me to flick a match: just the way I like fire lighting! Great community spirit - did a rafting trip and a couple of local walks and purchased at

We had no idea what we would find outside of Mangaweka at David and Sue Sweet's Mairenui Rural retreat as it was recommended by a fishing guide we hired, Jim Rainey. We were so pleasantly surprised. This feels like the real New Zealand. David showed us around the farm that has been in his family for generations and Sue made the best food of our 3 week trip. She is a stellar cook. In fact they spoiled us for everything else to come. David and Sue could not have been more welcoming and yet gave you all the privacy you wanted. We were lucky enough to spend New Years eve with them and had the best food, wine and company that one could ask for. They speak many languages and have travel all over, so there is no shortage of interesting conversation to be had. There was a French

Mairenui is as authentic a farm/rural stay as you will get in NZ. The feel is absolutely genuine and is set in one of the North Island's most scenic areas with beautiful rolling hill farmland, a beautiful canyoned river and native bush walks. The accommodation is wonderfully old fashioned and gives you the feel of an late 1800s colonial farm house stay with fire places, verandahs overlooking bush and farmland, while also having all the comforts and amenities you would expect. The property is secluded and it is lovely and peaceful, you wake to only hear the bird song. The hosts really "make" your stay. Sue and David understand your needs and the hosted farmhouse meal is a must as the food and wine is excellent and the conversation with the hosts brings out their clear love of
