Modern well appointed rooms. On the room tv one can create mobile access on phone to hotel services. Pool at top with great views, wine and liquors but only Heineken beer. Good mattress. Shower tub combo. bidet hair dryer toiletries.
There’s a mini bar with liquor sodas as well as nespresso coffee. There’s water by the bedside ( that one is free) wine and water bottles over the minibar (charge) .
Buffet breakfast extensive. Everything from made to order to salads, breads, cereals, meats but also vegan and gluten free options. On the roof is Pool bar open until 8 and lobby bar to 1. Live music. Main group of elevators goes to floors but with separate ones to the spa and roof pool (only two. Takes a while)
Negatives. Ac is slooow. It took several hours to drop from 25c to 19c. (77 to 67) Busy road ask for higher floor. There’s a Park across street but graffiti on one building. From here the tourist areas a bit of a walk. In the bathroom, the Hair dryer requires the user to constantly hold the power button. By the bedside are multiple buttons (all unlabeled) that work the various lights an even room curtains. One electric outlet in bathroom bit inconvenient spot.
We had a hiccup when we checked into the hotel as we were informed we would have a specific room but it wasn't available. The front desk agent "Beatrice" was fantastic!!! She listened to our concern, and immediately made it right for us. We stood in the Presidential Suite which was a treat. It is quite large, it has a full bathroom with a jetted shower and then a tub/shower combo. Double vanity and toilet/bidet. There is also a half bath in the suite which comes in handy. Every night we had a nice treat of wine/champagne and sweets or appetizers left on the dining room table. The Air conditioning struggled a bit in the bedroom to get colder at night time. The hotel is beautiful and well maintained. The breakfast was amazing every day (photos attached) The rooftop bar is nice if you go early in the day - it's packed with people later in the afternoon/evening. We ate dinner at the bar one night and the food was delicious! We did try the Italian restaurant and we did not care for it.
This is where the review starts to go down in rating. We booked round trip transfers with the hotel for airport pick up/drop off. We paid $120Euro round trip however you are better getting a cab. The van that picked us up was old and Air conditioner was broken, then the car that picked us up at the hotel to drop us off at the airport, their AC was sluggish.
I believe the most disappointing aspect for us was we booked Private tours with the hotel and the description the hotel provided is not the service we received. After paying over $400+Euro per tour per day we had no idea entry fees or lunch was not included, we had to pay for every entry fee on top of the tour. The tour guide would drop us off and tell us where to walk and what to see many times never coming with us and just staying in the parking lot. I thought we were paying for escorted tours. The final tour described us having lunch and going to a winery for tastings etc. The hotel then stated they made an error on the description they detailed the 10 hr tour when they priced out the 8 hour tour. They gave us a credit of $100 to make up for the misunderstaning but we still didn't get the tour we were informed was included for the price.
The hotel staff responding to emails needs to do a better job on explaining their tours and setting the expectations of what is and what is 'not' included. As we would have hired a different company that had everything included for the same amount. We found ourselves paying an extra $100 euros per day with lunch and all the entry fees.
We had breakfast included in our rate and our family enjoyed it, although it wasn't great. My teenage son made good use of chocolate fountain. The fruit was really good and so were the eggs.
The hidden gem at the Epic Sana is the spa, which is accessible to guests. There's a wonderful indoor pool with jacuzzi jets and a steam room. Our family basically had the place to ourselves one afternoon after a long day of sightseeing.
The absolute worst experience I had during our two week travels around Europe occurred at the rooftop pool bar. I hesitate to say this but if I were the manager of this hotel, I would fire both the rooftop bartenders. I sat at this bar for 20 minutes while the bartender pretended to make my drink. Instead, he kept servicing every person who came up to the bar. I have no idea why. He just ignored me and then handed me some sort of mix of fruit juice and alcohol. I had no idea what he made. Then, he went back to ignoring me. It was highly disrespectful and just terrible customer service. Skip the rooftop pool, which is always overcrowded and head to the spa pool instead. If you have any issues with the bartenders, please let management know. I did when I checked out.
The hotel is located in the upper end of the city and you have to walk around 30 min to the city center and Bairro Alto where many bars and restaurants are located. However the area is full of high end shopping and great atmosphere with the park just around the corner.
We used Uber a lot and paid 4-5 eur to the center if not walking, otherwise public transport is easy and jusy around the corner.
Luxourios hotel worth it all!
The housekeeping service was impeccable, attentive to the replacement and tidiness of towels and ammenities, and of course overall cleaning of the room. All you had to do was leave the apartment for a few minutes and,"voilà", the room was impecable again.
Be sure to enjoy the Fitnnes space/gym, swimming pool (with amazing water jets), saunas and the showers (there are 3 of them). They provide an incredible, unique, and invigorating experience; especially the sensory shower which simulates the 4 seasons of the year.
During all the 5 days of my stay I went to the gym to enjoy the plenty and diverse breakfast at it's fullest. I'm a vegetarian and i've never seen such a sensible concern with different food choices and dietary restrictions, either at the buffet or by the staff!
I've been to many hotels around the world, but I've never seen one with such a tasty and assorted breakfast! Finally, take at least one night to dine at the gorgeous Allora Restaurant, with impecable service and fresh food (to my wife one of the best panna cotta's out there)!
Congratulations! On my next passage through Lisbon the EPIC SANA Marquês Hotel will be my number one choice! Thank you for everything!
Moreover, a very very unpleasant surprise was at the check out, when the reception asked to pay for the minibar ,but in the room there was no price lists of any products (we only drank 2 coffees and 2 bottle of water , which usually are free and offered by the hotel).
The first impressions on walking through the front doors were this place has class.
The check in was friendly and efficient with no language issues; we all then headed off to the bar and had a great evening with some great staff. The evening got late, and I found myself in with a very raucous, but friendly group. The bar man came across and asked if I was ok in the middle of the group, yes, I was, and it was great to see both people enjoying themselves sensibly bar staff recognising the situation could be a bit overpowering for some.
Breakfast was ok, varied, but did not hit the highlights for me, I don’t think it was the food, maybe the presentation, but not starting service until 7 am is too late if you are travelling and need to be in the airport early.
The rooms are well appointed, even the standard ones, the internet was excellent at around 150 mbs. I did think the lighting, curtain and general technology were a little over the top, but seemed to work, I was staying in a room with a bath, and hurdling into it / climbing out of it was not good for me – shower trays always please. I did like the mirror TV, but the channels were a bit limited.
Its also in a good position mid-town and close to a tram station.
I do feel my score of 4 is a little harsh, but relating it to the overall experience, the bath and breakfast were not what I would have expected from a 5 star hotel
So, all in all would I stop there again – certainly, could anything have done better – open breakfast earlier and remove the baths.
