The only surviving original Art Deco hotel in Lisbon, with a touch of modern whimsical nuances, this small hotel is unique. Dating from 1944 and designed by the famous Portuguese modernist architect Cassiano Branco, it retains its original soul. Meticulously recuperated , it was combined with nowadays technologies in order to offer all actual comfort. The Hotel Britania is perfectly located in a quiet street just off the exclusive Avenida da Liberdade.

Hotel's Favourite
My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in celebration of our silver wedding anniversary. Having considered many, many choices of hotels in Lisbon, selecting the Hotel Britania was a brilliant decision. When going to Lisbon, this hotel should be your No.1 choice.
What makes this hotel special are the exceptional staff. From Carolina and Migual at receiption with their welcoming, friendly and efficient manner to the front of house and housekeeping teams, many of whom have been there for years.
In particular, a large thank you to Carolina with her wonderful suggestions, directions and history that made our visit more fulfilling.
The Hotel Britania is a truly exceptional blend of elegance, history, and style. A hidden gem that’s been preserving the charm of the 1940s, this boutique hotel offers guests a luxurious, intimate experience that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern. From the moment you step through the doors, you’re transported into a world where art deco opulence meets warm Portuguese hospitality.
Just a short walk from the vibrant Avenida da Liberdade (Lisbon's fifth Avenue equivalent), we had easy access to Lisbon’s best shopping, dining, and cultural landmarks.
Each room is a beautiful balance of classic design and modern amenities. From the plush bedding (the bed was massive !!) to the soft lighting and luxurious marble bathrooms your in comfort from the moment you walk in the door.
We will definetely return to the Hotel Britania Art Deco and I would highly recommed staying here.

We couldn’t be happier with our stay at the Britania, located in a quiet road close to the theatre and the Avenida metro. We loved the character of the hotel: it’s Art Deco look, the preserved barber shop, the photos and the gallery of past tableware. But its the staff that make this hotel so special: what a team of consummate professionals in every department!
From the correspondence when making a direct booking (rescuing us from near disaster after Expedia cancelled our reservation) to the presentation of a glass of bubbly and Pastéis de nata with birthday candle, the staff went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Every member of the team was polite, friendly, helpful and efficient.
In terms of facilities, our room was large. The bed was enormous! And blissfully the curtains were heavy and well- lined, ensuring a good night’s sleep. And for once there was a dressing table with mirror and light (so often lacking in modern hotels set up for business use).
On entry, there’s a lobby - ideal for hanging up outdoor coats. The lobby also held the mini bar (which meant no humming fridge in the room) and tea and coffee making provisions (although no milk for tea).
The bathroom was well appointed: the large bath had a rainfall shower as well as hand held attachment; the provision of robes, slippers and Molton Brown toiletries added to the sense of old fashioned luxury.
Port was provided in the room (as well as available for afternoon tea alongside a light black tea and pastels de nata). And the hotel also provided a complimentary bottle of bubbles for my birthday.
Breakfast included a huge range of lovely fresh bread and pastries; fruits, cereals, yogurt, fresh juice, as well as cheese, charcuterie and eggs. I was delighted there were teapots, and my husband loved the coffee maker.
We appreciated the free entry to the art gallery, which inspired us to explore another part of the city and climb yet another Lisbon hill for a view down to the port.
Thank you for making my birthday trip a memorable one.

I always love to return to the Britania. In the fifteen or so years that I have been a guest here I was never disappointed. The attention of the staff, the decor and all the small details that make such a big difference to the seasoned traveler make me and my wife so incredibly comfortable. It is and remains one of my favourite hotels in the world. During our latest stay we used the hotel’s garage which is at street level and pleasantly spacious (most other hotels’ garages are several floors underground and do require some manoeuvring!j. But I would avoid the room immediately above the garage (216, I think), as you hear the garage door being opened and closed as well as the nightly rubbish collection. Apart from that, I cannot praise this hotel enough and congratulate the management to their achievement of maintaining such high standards Year in year out.

This small, boutique style hotel exudes charm and glamour. We were very fortunate enough to be given a room upgrade, so stayed in a very beautiful suite. There were lots of art deco style touches in the room and the hotel itself has lots of art deco period details, all of which added to its beauty and charm. Other nice details included lovely Molton Brown toiletries and a complementary glass of delicious port available in the room, which were very much appreciated. The hotel is spotlessly clean throughout and the staff were charming, elegantly dressed and extremely helpful during our stay. The buffet style breakfast was excellent, with lots of fresh fruits, a selection of breads and delicious pastries all of which are replenished frequently by the lovely staff. The hotel is perfectly located in a quite street from which you can walk down the wonderful Avenida Liberdades with all its glamorous shops and be in the centre quite easily and quickly.

We stayed here for 2 nights in January and were immediately impressed with this hotel. It is very carefully decorated and is being brought back to its original state, including cork flooring which actually looks like marble until you feel it.
Booking in was straightforward and speedy and the cases were in the room when we got there. The room itself was spacious, understated and stylish, as was the hotel in general. Unfortunately when we were there the library was being refurbished to its original style so we couldn't see that but there was plenty of room for breakfast and drinks without using the library.
The beds were comfortable, the towels were huge and soft, and slippers and gowns were provided. A decanter of port was in the room and also port and ginja and water were available in the lounge free of charge. (Ginja is a local Portuguese drink similar to cherry brandy but not sweet -- it is really very good.)
The location of the hotel was excellent, just behind the Avenida da Liberdade and it was any easy walk into the centre of the city. A tram ride to get to the fort and the statue of the explorers.
This has become one of my favourite hotels and we will definitely be back in the not too distant future. Thank you to all the staff for a very pleasant stay.

I had high expectations when I chose the Britania Hotel as the base to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary, and they were all fulfilled. Don’t be fooled into thinking that because it’s boutique it lacks something the bigger chain hotels have, in fact the opposite is true. This hotel is more personal, more welcoming, warmer, and truly a pleasure to return to after a day exploring this beautiful city. But that’s not all.
Populated by ever smiling and helpful staff the hotel is located just off the Avenida da Liberdades within a short stroll of the Avenida metro stop. Breakfast is excellent - freshly squeezed juice, Nespresso coffee, tea, pastries, eggs, cereals, bacon, sausage, and the bread rolls. Mmmmm. Port, pastries, tea and coffee free every evening from 5-9pm, and free port in your room too. Linen changed every day, cleanliness excellent, And, English language channels on our TV, and not just news channels.
My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in the Britania Hotel. We were greeted upon entering our well appointed junior suite with a bottle of champagne to celebrate our wedding anniversary, a great start to a stay that we were saddened to leave.
Highly recommended and thank you for a wonderful stay. We’ve already recommended you to friends and we will be back.

We stayed here for two nights in the beginning of February 2020. Reaching the hotel from the airport is very easy, the airbus stops at the main street, 200m from the hotel. We arrived rather early (11am), so our room was not ready, but the person at reception offered us complimentary breakfast, while we were waiting. We ended up walking around before coming back to check in, only to find that we were upgraded to a room with a patio. The room is spacious, and has coffee maker and a fridge, and a free bottle of port that is replenished every day. In addition the the complimentary breakfast, the hotel serves every day between 5pm and 8pm complimentary coffee and the famous Portuguese cakes, and port and a Portuguese liqueur are available 24 hours a day in the library. The hotel itself has a rich history, going back to the 40's, with Art Nouveau architecture, but for us the main advantage of this hotel was the excellent service of the people who worked there, who tried to be helpful in every respect. The ratio of quality to price (it was less that 100 Euro a night) was unexpected.

We stayed here in early February on the last two days of our 3 weeks in Portugal, and we are so glad that we had chosen this hotel for our ending stay. While the location was very convenient and the room comfortable and quiet, it was the people who really made our stay feel exceptional. Door men, front desk, breakfast staff, everyone we interacted with was helpful and upbeat. Whoever manages the hotel chooses and trains their people well – it shows. I’m a light sleeper very sensitive to noise, but I had no problem here. Our room’s entry door opened to a small foyer with bathroom to the left and a separate inner door, which isolated the room from the hall. The window had outer and inner windows; the hotel faces a quiet street with a building under construction across the street but I was never disturbed by noise. As to location, the Avenida metro stop is only a few minutes walk away, as are numerous good restaurants on R. de Santa Marta / R. Sao Jose. We like to walk everywhere (even with the hills), and 20 minutes or less in various directions will get you to the main tourist sights. Breakfast was filling and the hours were quite generous as I recall. We look forward to staying again next year!

This is a boutique hotel I would always want to go back! The location is as convenient as it gets. One can access public transportation, parks, restaurants, and one of the main avenues in Lisbon by walking just a few meters. The staff is kind, attentive, reliable, efficient, responsive and will always make you feel welcome. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds super comfortable. ALL the areas are spotless clean! Additionally, the free WiFi connection is strong and stable. They serve breakfast buffet for almost 5 hours, making it convenient for the early birds and those who would like to sleep-in. The variety of food is good, but most importantly everything is always fresh. Coffee...oh the coffee...all the types of coffee were really good. I highly recommend Hotel Britania Art Deco if you are looking to stay in a peaceful, clean, comfortable, and centric location in Lisbon. Search no more!

We have spent seven memorable days in Lisbon and the experience wqs thoroughy enjoyable. The hotel dates back in the 1940's art deco period and this is reflected though its current style, which honours its rich past.
Location: Extremely safe and central location, out of the hustle and bustle of the historic centrr nearby but just a couple of minutes out of it, on a very quite and safe street, just off the great and beatiful Avenida de Liberdade. From and to the airport we very easily used the Metro, the metro station Avenida is just 2 minutes from the hotel. The are is extremely well connected to all public transportation, but we mostly explored Lisbon by foot, and we felt the location of the hotel was absolutely perfect.
Room:I We had a room (24) honouring the hotel's historic background with a Bazilian artist - Vinicius de Moraes, iwhich we found very special. The room itself was extremely spacious, high ceilings, art deco style, modern amenities but teh design reflecting its art deco heritage. Filled with character. The bottle of Port in the room was a very pleasant touch. The sleep quality is oustanding - vey good quality bed.
Breakfast: Thelibrary / brakfast saloon / bar was also true to hotel's art deco history. We enjoyed the variety offered, especiallythe fresh fruits every morning. The selection is vey wide and the service is very attentive and the ladies very friendly.
Services: Though we normally expect a colder / impersonal interaction with hotels in general (compared to more intimate stays like B&Bs), we we felt very warmly welcomed and the staff was exteremely attentive, friendy and privded very valuable recomendations. We felt very spoiled in every way during our stay :)
We will share these very warm memories of our stay in Hotel Britania and we recomend with open heart staying here for a memorable experience in Lisbon!
