Detailed Reviews
Fortaleza do Guincho is the perfect costal hideaway—just a short hop from Lisbon. I love the slightly remote location, the hotel‘s intimate size—and the absolute focus on quality.
Rooms are very characteristic for a Fortress—you pretty much feel like entering a different century. Yet all amenities are of the highest standard.
Quality, all around, is exceptional. The service is friendly and diligent. All members of staff appear proud to work here. Attention to detail is high.
The hotel features a Michelin Star restaurant with an amazing view (recommendation). But food in all outlets is excellent.
At the time of my visit the hotel had implemented an excellent Covid-regime, strictly followed by all staff (and most guests-the rest were kindly reminded). I felt very safe.
Thank you to both the brilliant GM and all staff for a wonderful stay.

We have stayed at the hotel several times but could only come for lunch at ‘The Spot’ this time unfortunately! The view is stunning and even just the tosta mista lunch was a huge portion and side salad was fresh and tasty. We felt it was great value and worth paying slightly more for the service and location. The cake of the day and coffees etc were delicious.
We were married here many years ago but the staff still remember us and make us feel so welcome. This was the Relais and Chateaux ‘treatment’ yes to a point, but the staff, particularly Marta and Petra, are just lovely, genuine, welcoming people. When we return to stay we do so for the experience too and we are grateful for their time and efforts.
The rest speaks for itself- wonderful clean, unique hotel with top class food & views. Don’t hesitate to visit!

We had the pleasure to spend 3 nights here in early September during which I had my birthday, one I will never forget.
The hotel staff made me feel so special and left a kind gift in our room on the day, it was very touching.
It exceeded every expectation we had of a 5* hotel from the quality of service through to the food and drink. Eating in the restaurant one evening is a must (if you can), and the location is great for days at the beach and quality seafood restaurants nearby. We are desperate to return one day!
Thank you to the excellent staff for making it an exceptional experience.

I stayed two nights at Fortaleza do Guincho and cannot recommend it. The hotel is totally overpriced and is clearly not up to the five-star standard that it claims for itself. Certainly the location on the cliffs above Guincho beach is spectacular, but the place is pretty lonely, there is no swimming pool and you need a car unless you want to stay there the whole day. Admittedly, the hotel lobby is nicely decorated, but the rooms are pretty small and basic and offer no luxury whatsoever. Bathrooms are clean but tiny and desperately need to be renovated. WiFi is very weak anywhere outside the main lobby. The staff at the reception desk are helpful but the waiters in the breakfast and lunch areas are not up to the job at all: service is slow and lacks attention for the guest. On the positive side, breakfast - which is included in the room rate - is of high quality, very rich and tasty. But overall, value for money is pretty poor. I would not come again.

Dear guest Danylux0412, We are extremely sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. We do apologize for not being able to offer a pool, a SPA and gymnasium, but the Hotel is built in a fortress from the 20th century, a protected building; on the top of it we are located in a natural park where the environment is really protected, therefore we were not allowed to make any changes in the building and surrounding area. Knowing, that it can be really important for some guests to have those facilities, we have signed an agreement with a club close by ( 5 minutes away driving from the Hotel ) where our guests can go and use the facilities. Taking in consideration our location, ( a natural park, just in front of the ocean ), a quite quite place, where you can enjoy the nature, the Atlantic ocean, the cultural live we have to offer around ( Sintra / Lisbon only a few minutes away driving) and the gastronomy we strongly recommend our guests to have a car, nevertheless we always can provide a private driver or to call a taxi. Once again we do apologize very much for not being able to reach your expectation. We hope you have enjoyed your time in Portugal, and really hope to welcome again in Portugal. We remain at your entire disposal for any further information. My husband and I stayed at Fortaleza do Guincho for two nights while we were visiting Lisbon. Overall, it has a great location for a relaxing time and great food options right there. Our stay here was unexpected because a worker's strike at the Lisbon airport stranded us for two days. We knew we didn’t want to stay in Lisbon itself and so we opted for Fortaleza do Guincho as a compromise so we could still stay close to the city.
Because I have loyalty status with Relais & Chateaux hotels, this was the closest place to us. I booked it in the airport terminal and then immediately got into a car and headed here. By the time I arrived the staff already had a personalized letter and had upgraded us, and that’s absolutely the kind of service that I appreciate. All the staff was professional and approachable and helpful.
We were upgraded to a corner room that looked out onto the water and neighboring peninsula. It was a relaxing respite from the drama at the airport. You truly are staying at a former fort and all the architectural finishes still reflect that. It was almost like going back in time while still maintaining the air of luxury. Our room had a small desk table where the windows opened up and you could lay on a chaise lounge to relax.
They have a one Michelin star restaurant here at the property, and so while that is a separate review, the breakfast is also in that space and it is just beautiful. All the food was very good here and the wine selections were perfect.
As we did not want to go into Lisbon, we used the bikes to go the 10 or 15 km to Cascais. Going there is easy because you’re going with the wind, but I will say coming back on the bike is tough going directly into the wind. It was still an experience and we were able to enjoy the countryside a lot more than I thought. There’s plenty of hiking opportunities, and of course you don’t need to go all the way to Cascais for a beach because there’s one directly next to the hotel. Actually, there are two!
This is a very unique and beautiful place to stay, and we certainly recommend it!

We stayed here for a few days earlier this month. It looks and feels like an old fortress right on the Atlantic, beaches either side of it, about ten minutes drive from Cascais…and very windy!
Excellent service as you’d expect from Relais & Chateaux - especially from the reception staff who were very helpful as we planned and replanned our journey. There’s a casual dining cafe and a more formal restaurant plus drinks on the terrace. It’s a very elegant place to stay, close to Cascais and its restaurants and a good base to travel around the area with a car to see Estoril etc. Some larger restaurants along the nearby beach but go further (ask the staff for recommendations) along and the food and service is excellent. We had a room with open balcony and one with a closed balcony - we preferred the closed one, it came with windows that opened if needed, a chaise longer and a balcony door to separate it from the room.
Very good stay in a historic hotel.

I was a little nervous because of a few recently bad Trip Advisor reviews, but I am so happy with our stay. This is an elegant hotel in a fortress from the 1600s. It was a 5 minute walk from 2 beautiful, iconic beaches in Cascais. There is a little beach shack with food and drinks at one beach, and a restaurant at the far side of Guincho beach (more of a trek). Everyone we encountered was pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed speaking with all of the staff. They are available yet not intrusive. The tasting menu with the wine pairing at the Michelin Star Restaurant was out of this world - the quality, freshness, creativity of the chef and service from the staff was second to none. The breakfast spread was unreal and extremely generous. They have a little bar area with a fireplace and TV, and games. If weather permits there is an outdoor balcony to dine on and also an outdoor patio which was so relaxing to have drinks and look at the sea.
The one major issue we had was our air conditioner did not work, and while the staff were very obliging, no one seemed surprised, and we were pretty much told it wasn't going to be fixed . It became stuffy in the room. We had a beautiful balcony and breathtaking view that more than made up for this, however, there are no screens so we couldn't leave the door open for fresh air. We were provided with a standing fan which we were thankful for. The minor issue we had was that the bed/mattress/frame/pillows left a lot to be desired. With improvements in these areas and perhaps a shelving unit in the bathroom below the sink, it would have been 5 star. Some might say the rooms are small but that is expected and we did not have an issue - it is an intimate hotel with only 27 rooms in an old fortress so the footprint is expected to be limited.
It was very romantic and quiet. It seems remote but really there is a big surfer gathering spot next door and it's just a quick taxi into town for a night out, shopping or to get to the marina. We had the hotel organize a private tour of Sintra for us and it was amazing.
I would definitely recommend a stay here because of its charm and stunning location.

Dear Mrs. Jennifer, First of all we would like to thank you for your comment and review. You can't imagine how pleased we are to know that we have exceed your expectations; since we work really hard day after day, to make sure we are able to reach our guest wishes. Thank you so much for such a details comment in what regards the Hotel and the surrounding area; as mentioned by you we are quite remote, but at the same time really close to the major points of interest. Lisbon and Sintra are about 20 to 30 minutes driving, Lisbon International airport is about 50 minutes away driving, Cascais a fishing village is only 5 to 10 minutes away, and of course we are just a few seconds away from the beach, therefore for the ones you want to combine the nature, the ocean, the cultural live and the gastronomy, we can be really great option. Especially for the ones looking for something different, since the Hotel is built in a Fortress from the XVII century and located in a natural park. Wife and I stayed 3 nights before our cruise from Lisbon. We had a great stay and would highly recommend it. We rented a car and drove around west coast during our visit so the hotel location was perfect. If you just want to see Lisbon then stay in the city.
Staff was extremely friendly and most spoke very good English. The hotel is a converted 200 yr old fort but the inside is totally renovated and fairly modern. Our room was nice, small with either a queen bed or 2 twin beds. Air conditioning was effective and very quiet. Voltage was 240v European plugs so bring converters if from US.
Parking was a private lot in front of hotel so avoid the crowded beach parking lots. We drove to Cascais for dinner 2 nights, also drove up west coast including Mafra. Use Google map or similar cause driving includes small villages with winding roads. One day we went to Sintra to see Pena Palace and other sites. Hotel will get your tickets and they advised us to Uber to Sintra as parking is scarce. Great call! Uber works with local Spot rideshare and only cost 15 Euros each way. Sintra was worth seeing.
Our room included breakfast in their beautiful dining room overlooking the ocean, very good food. We ate lunch and dinner one time each in their bar restaurant, very good steak sandwich and hamburger. Wait staff were friendly and efficient.

We stayed here for three nights during our first trip to Portugal. We had been in Lisbon and wanted to escape the city, and enjoy the coast in a luxurious hotel. We are very happy we chose the Fortaleza do Guincho.
This is an older classically decorated hotel situated in a national park, on a promontory that straddles two magnificent beaches. The views of the beach, the ocean, and the surrounding countryside are amazing. It is about 7 km away from Cascais, and while there are excellent restaurants in walking distance, a car is optimal to enhance ones stay. The hotel does provide bicycles for guest use.
When I booked our room, a junior suite was not available. I had asked to upgrade to one should that become available. On our arrival we were delighted to find that we were able to have an ocean side suite with open balcony, upgraded at no additional charge. We found a bottle of port, water, and fruit on our arrival. Our room was large and beautifully decorated. The balcony had table and chairs that allowed us to sit outside with privacy. While the bathroom was a bit small, it was very functional.
Breakfast buffet was included in our stay and was excellent. We ate one lunch in SPOT, which was quite good. We also had one dinner at the Michelin starred restaurant that is part of the hotel. It was an extraordinary meal.
All the staff we interacted with were genuinely friendly and helpful, making us feel more like family than hotel guests.
We loved walking the beaches. Unfortunately, these are not good swimming beaches because of the huge waves and dangerous riptides. However, there are beautiful swimming beaches in Cascais that we took advantage of.
My only regret about this hotel is that it does not have a swimming pool. But I knew this beforehand and felt that the great location and hotel quality would make up for this loss. It certainly did for us.

We accidentally found this hotel while on a long hike from Cascais. It looks like an old fortress. Decided to book a night but got there well before check-in. Staff did an excellent job getting us a room early and also extended our check out time. EVERY staff member we met went to extraordinary lengths to ensure our needs were met to the very best possible. Great location on the Atlantic. Rooms very nicely appointed and hotel is excellent. Had dinner in the Michelin restaurant and I say add a star to this one. Spent some time with the Chef and his creations are masterful but most of all delicious. We changed our travel plans and will be back for a couple of nights in mid-October even though we have already paid for those nights elsewhere. Have travelled all over the world and would rate this hotel and location in our top 5.

Good morning from Fortaleza do Guincho Relais & Châteaux,
I am afraid we don't have a pool in the Hotel.
You do provide towels to go to the beach, and we are laterally on the beach ( 2 minutes away - walking ).
As for the umbrellas you can rent it on the beach.
Let me just to point out that July and August can be quite windy in here.
I hope I was a help.
With sunny regards from Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho Relais & Châteaux.

I am afraid not; but we can assist you with the transfer from the airport to the Hotel.
I remain at your entire disposal for any further information.
Best regards,
Mariana Franco
It is 7 Km. Easy cab but the hotel gives you bikes. We watched movies there in the beach and then enjoyed dinner and drinks on an amazing roof top bar!
