My partner and I stayed at the Angra Marina Hotel late November 2023. The Hotel was located in Angra Do Heroismo overlooking Mount Brazil and the harbor. IT was a perfect location for our walking adventures and we took in the beautiful city of Angra Do Heroismo enjoying the local beauty of the town, the cafes, shops and of course the wonderful Christmas lights displaying the festivities of what was to come later in the month The front desk staff were wonderful, accommodating and the hotel's comfort and restaurant and breakfasts were great and we began our day in the beautiful dining room and end of day the comforts of our very nice hotel room. We could not have found a better place for our stay in Terceira as we journeyed from there to Lisbon and Porto but retained the wonderful memories of or stay at the Angra Marina Hotel! IT was wonderful!

The worst 5 star hotel ever, 3 star at best. The reception staff are rude, the night staff are worse, the hotel is unclean, mould and orange residue all over bathroom, the food/breakfast is awful. I was asked to move rooms, which was not an issue. However, no assistance was offered. Which from a 5 star facility i would except at least an offer, due to the room change being the hotels fault due to a leak. The only positive are the staff in resteraunt who are helpful and friendly.

THIS IS NOT A 5-STAR HOTEL! When my husband and I arrived at the hotel the lobby was deserted. There was no doorman or bellman to help with our luggage. The huge lobby with worn-out furniture was empty. There was no one at the front desk. Behind the front desk was a board that was taped up. Clearly, these were all uncharacteristic of a 5-star hotel. This is a one-star compared to the 5-star and 4-star hotels we stayed at on another Azores island, Sao Miguel. I thought the taxi dropped us off at the wrong hotel. A few minutes later, a lady came behind the front desk. She was not dressed in professional attire like what you normally see in nice hotels. To our disappointment, she confirmed that we were at the right hotel. Our room was not ready, and she asked us to bring our luggage ourselves to the storage room, which was dirty and smelly. My husband and I were disappointed with what we had seen so far and were quite nervous about the condition of our room. The room turned out quite spacious albeit sparse and dated furniture. We were at least relieved that it was clean and had no smell. However, many things malfunctioned - the A/C, toilet flush, coffee machine. We complained about the AC to the front desk. He was not surprised as he said it was a usual occurrence. He said the hotel was full and could not transfer us to another room. He promised to send a fan while he schedules a technician to come. Neither came. Thankfully, the temperature cooled down at night. My husband fixed the toilet flush himself. The other things we just let go. What is annoying about the room is that it does not have the typical light switches on the wall. You must use this weird remote control to turn on the lights, which should be easy to use but it was not. It kept turning on the wrong light. The breakfast room was huge with only one staff. It offered a not-too-appetizing breakfast buffet. You have to help yourself with coffee by lining up at 2 coffee machines, both of which kept breaking down. The only staff had to keep resetting them each time. The options for coffee machines included caffe latte and cappuccino, but they all came out as black coffee. I told the only staff that they seemed to forget to put milk in the machine, and she looked at me as if I was asking too much. The pool area looks very run down. It boasts of a pool bar but is not in use. There is a bar/restaurant on the top floor with no ambiance and is always almost empty. Too bad, because it had a lot of potential with its spaciousness and beautiful view of the marina. Our hiking guide mentioned that he had not met a single happy guest from this hotel. The only saving grace of this hotel is its location. To the front of it is the marina, to the left is the historic fort and the town is just a few minutes' walk away. Outside of this hotel, all of our experience in Terceira was 5-star.

Definitely not a 5 star, maybe back in the days when it was part of Barcelo group. While the hotel looks amazing on the cliff and has great big rooms and balconies it looks like it hasn't been kept up. Everything in the hotel and in the rooms is old and needs work. Things like the elevators that go random and stop at random. There is peeling paint all over a lot of balcony furniture and metal appliances are covered in rust. They do offer a pretty nice breakfast and the staff if very helpful. Also while the location seems nice it's on an extremely steep hill to walk in to the town.

We did not get off to a good start after arriving on a Saturday afternoon for a week’s stay. Unfortunately we were given incorrect information by the reception staff at checkin and when we arrived for diner at 9pm we were told the kitchen was closed and we could not be served. One member of staff suggested we got an Uber Eats!!! After complaining some more we were eventually served a buffet dinner. The rest of the week we were given a set menu which was not always 5 stars and sometimes contained pork despite our telling the staff several times that we did not eat pork. We were often the only diners so remembering our dietary requirements should not have been too hard. The breakfast buffet was good. The staff are nice and friendly but not all of them are properly trained, waiting staff in particular. As some other reviews mention the building specifications are high but the place is poorly maintained. We did not have any cleanliness issues - our room was cleaned and our towels changed daily. I suspect the close proximity to the sea accounts for some of the damp smell issues but these are made up by the good location. I have had to think long and hard about the star rating and wish there was a 3.5 as that would have been my choice.

A hotel with a luxurious design like marble reception hall. Big corridors, large rooms with plenty of space. A breakfast with enough variety. The hotel is nicely located opposite the yacht harbour of Angra do Heroism. But the hotel misses an atmosphere; it’s big, empty and without a soul like there are hardly other visitors.

Not the 5 star hotel they are selling it as. Upon arrival we encountered the cold very uninterested in guests checking in staff, very little response when spoken to and 5 hours later a room. A room, not fit for a stay in my opinion, the smell of mold that hits you first when you open the room was awful, the barren room didn’t help with the feeling of a property abandoned! The shower floods the entire bathroom floor, making it serious slip hazard, I used beach towels to build a perimeter around the floor to try and soak up the water that doesn’t drain and spills out into room, the beach towels that you have to sign a sort of contract to get. The hair dryer on the walll is at end of shower where it can easily be exposed to water, the tub front was broken as was the toilet flush. Balcony was littered with cigarette butts and the rooms are soo damp my passport actually curled! The entire place seems abandoned except for the dirty furniture in the lobby, nothing on walls, glass cases empty and light in hallways that sometimes work sometimes don’t, and the lights in the entire hotel are never on, few in lobby at dark only. Made the best of it as there was no other hotel availability due to the Festa. This hotel has some explaining to do as to how they are 5 stars, DONT STAY HERE. Side note, they did switch us to another room due to the mold smell soo intense, transferred to a newer room, why wouldn’t you just do that to begin with, when I say mold, I mean we had sore throats and headaches. The “new” room was minus the smell but all other problems listed above were present in the “new” room as well. If this were to be your 1st experience in beautiful Portugal, how unfortunate that would be.

Let’s start with the positives.. very helpful and friendly staff and a great view over the marina. A lot of money was spent on the building and fitting of this hotel and this is very evident. However, updating and maintenance are urgently required to the paintwork and bathrooms in particular. A/C didn’t work correctly which will be an issue for the summer if not corrected. The friendliness of the staff made up for many of the deficits of the building!

We stayed for a week. AC did not work at our room at all. They moved us to another room by our request (staff is great BTW), AC still worked there gust few hours a day for three days and fully stopped to work again in last two days of stay. These were terrible two nights. We just could not get sleep in this humidity. BTW, there is also no AC at any of the hotel common places such as a lobby, restaurant, and the bar. This is definitely not a 5-star accommodation as claimed.

As a summary: Hotel needs a lot of money in maintenance, staff are rude and so different from the others we met on the island, and even ignoring all of that, it is still not a 5 star hotel. As a starting point I do wish to say that we were upgraded from our original booking twice - once upon arrival as it was our honeymoon, and second as a result of that room being of a poor maintenance and cleaning standard. When we initially walked into our first room we didn't notice much other then the amazing view of the marina and after a long day of travel we were tired and had a short nap. When I awoke I had a shower but as I didn't remember to get a towel from the rack I asked my wife. At this stage she noticed that we only had one bath towel, and one hand towel. She noticed that this handtowl was folded neatly but upon opening it out was dirty. The level of dirt was not that it had been stained, but that it just hadn't been washed. There was makeup and dirt all over it. As she waited for my to get out of the shower to call she also noticed mould on the roof. As we waited for the hotelstaff to come to review the room we also noticed that there was sand and dirt in the bath, more mould on the roof above the bed, and the soft furnishings and bedding was dirty. See below for photos of everything bar the dirty towel. At this stage the hotel staff moved us to a new room which did have some slightly mould on the roof which should really be dealt with, but as it was only slightly present and everything else was ok we accepted this room. It should be noted for full transparency that this was also an upgrade. However, the big thing for us is that there was zero apology offered and the tone taken, along with some of the actual statements made, were "what is the problem, do you just want more towels?". Not a single sorry was offered at this stage. They even brought down the head of housekeeping to view the room who was just shrugging her shoulders and saying she didn't see the problem. With the room issue cleared up, albeit very poorly, the next few days went by ok. The breakfasts were of poor quality, although they do say it's a designed menu, but the buffet style had food coming out dry and generally of poor quality even if the choice of food itself was good. There didn't seem to be any way to order anything custom. The drinks in the bar were quite expensive for the prices in other bars in the Island, circa 1.5 to 2 times the price, although the barman was very friendly and welcoming. The pool area on the bottom floor was incredibly poorly maintained. It was dark, with quite a lot of dirt buildup in corners and in nooks and crannies and it looked to be what I would expect of a 2 or 3 star hotel that had been open for 15+ years. There was also a leak from the ceiling above one of the main walk ways which was incredibly unsightly. A few days into our trip we ran out the nespresso coffee pods that were in the room and called for more. We were told that four are provided for every booking and more cost €4. We didn't ask how many that got us as we decided to leave it and not get any. We now wonder if you get 4 if staying for 8 nights like us and also 4 if you are only staying for one, but this seems to be incredibly cheap and far from 5 star resort service given I have never been in a hotel before where tea or coffee making facilities in the room are not standard. Nespresso is of 4 star + quality, but they are more expensive, however if the hotel do not want to absorb this cost without passing it onto the customer, then why not just use normal instant coffee instead? We'd have been happy with that. A couple of days later we needed some toilet paper, and called to reception. A hour later it had not arrived so we called again. 50 minutes later it had still not arrived but we had a trip planned and so left. When we returned 3 hours later housekeeping were then in our room and so replaced them. But we found this level of service where we were waiting over 110 minutes for a couple of roles of toilet paper to be delivered unacceptable of even a 3 star hotel. The reception when on the phone offered no apologies at all. I personally have never been to a 5 star resort/hotel and so do not know of the expected level of service. However I have stayed in a high number of 4 star hotels both for work and for pleasure and know that the service received here is significantly less then that I'd expect at a 4 star, let alone a 5, and I would rate it to be a poor 3 star hotel at best. Through the lens of hotel standards and maintenance levels, the hotel was dated, poorly furnished, and very poorly maintained. From a food and drink perspective the choices were poor for an apparent 5 star hotel and the prices were high not only for the island itself, but for what you get. However, times are tough at the moment and perhaps its tough to get workers on the island to fix these things. This might bring it down from a 5 to a 3 star, but what shouldn't be impacted is the hospitality of the staff. However, the staff themselves were not 5 or even 4 star level of friendly. They were short, rude, poorly trained, and unapologetic or accommodating for both major problems and simple requests alike. This hotel itself I would rate as being a 3 star at best, and despite our two upgrades to a Jnr Suite I would say the price we paid was still questionably worth it. I am lowering my review 1 star further due to the staff themselves, who when compared to the other islanders who are incredibly, incredibly friendly, were some of the worst hotel staff I have ever had to interact with. We will not be returning to this hotel and would not only not recommend it to others, but would actively encourage others to stay in other hotels.
