Just returned from 2 weeks at this hotel and would certainly recommend it. I’m guessing this has hotel has been fully refurbished in the last few years as it has a completely new modern feel to the rooms and all public areas including the restaurant. This was a pleasant change from the typically tired and dated Portuguese hotels you usually come across.
The Covid secure measures in place were adhered too by all staff and the hotel measures made for a safe stay.
The meals at breakfast and dinner are split into sittings of your choice to minimise numbers at any time and to minimise queuing. Of course you have to queue and be served with most of your food and I’m guessing there is less choice than the hotel may normally provide but in these Covid times this is perfectly acceptable for safety. The food was about what I expected so no complaints there either.
It’s a decent walk to Lagos town or a short taxi ride and the hotel reception can easily sort a taxi. Return taxis were very easy with a rank in the main square. Some excellent restaurants in town which I will review separately.
This hotel was very clean and well maintained and the service from staff was good especially as you must consider they will be operating on reduced numbers. Wide spacious pool area and no problem getting sun loungers. Both pool bar and full on Italian restaurant at the pool providing a choice of food if needed.
Would definitely return

It’s a nice looking hotel and is very clean, the pool is nice and very large. We always found beds
The room was big and again clean, we had a ground floor suite with separate bedroom for the adults

Location is not great with young children, although close to the beach, the walk into Lagos is too far with small kids. You have to get taxis ordered by reception and these can either be 5 mins or 30 mins-v unreliable especially if you have dinner booked.
Beach at the rear though is lovely and there is a nice beach bar with good food/sangria.

Pool bar at hotel is tiny! There is only one bar serving 100s of guests food and drink, long queues
Weirdly no bar inside is open during the day
Drinks expensive
Pizza place does good pizza though

Breakfast in the morning was very good

Kids activities not great during the day, kids disco was fun but started too late maybe 9?

Reception staff not very professional, some nice but some unhelpful

All in all it was ok but we wouldn’t stay again

We had a great family holiday at Vila Gale Lagos in June 2020. Hotel is very good adapted for clean and safe travel. We wore masks in the hotel building but not in the garden or near the pool area. Staff were wearing masks all the time. There are plenty of hand sanitizers all around the hotel and the hotel is being cleaned and sanitized non stop.
Breakfast included few queues to wait in. And it was a bit challenging to get a waiters attention to have juice refills. Food offering was limited to eggs, beans, sausage, beacon, cheese, ham, bread, pastry, yoghurt and miniature fruit salads. Same every day. Not very kid friendly. We had only breakfasts included, so can’t comment on lunches and dinners.
Entertainment program was also limited, but was rolling out as we were leaving, so maybe already improved.
Good tip for this hotel is to rent a car. Lagos is just 5 min driving and has amazing restaurants and old town. Also there are some scenic beaches in 10 min driving time. Outdoor car park is free.
Hope this review helps someone with 2020 travel plans.

The hotel itself is nice and clean and the food was to a good standard (whenever we go to all inclusive we end up eating out but this was the most we’ve used an all inclusive restaurant which is testament to the quality) we are early so there were no queues like others have said.
Top tip the food at the pool bar is delicious and included in the all inclusive, my son loved the hotdogs and burgers and we loved the wraps and sandwiches.
Our family room was a good size, the toilet door had no lock which was annoying.
Room tip: if you have toddlers don’t go for a ground floor room as they can escape. Our kids are older so was good for us as we could walk straight out to the pool.
There is a guy that tags your beds if they are left and after 45 min if you don’t return he takes your stuff and puts them in storage, this meant there was always a sun bed available and there was no saving beds at 7am which I liked although he was a little OTT at times.
There were plenty of green areas around which my son liked as he could play football.
You can walk to the beach which is stunning it’s 0.2km! But take everything with you as there are no shops, the shop onsite sells everything you need for the beach.
The town is €5 away by taxi and worth a trip, lovely shops and a market, nice football shop there, my son got a Portugal FC top for €19 and had Ronaldo 7 added to it for €10
The negative is a big one for us …the pool was freezing, no one was in it and those who did get in it were straight out after a few mins, it was so cold that my kids who normally spend the whole of the holiday in the pool spent the majority of the holiday bored on the sunloungers or in the room on their phones - I would not recommend or return here purely because of the pool! I think it’s because the pool is so big it’s impossible for the sun to heat it up.
There was a kids club but the majority of the guests were Portuguese, so the kids club was catered to this (quite rightly)

Stayed here with family on B&B basis and was everything we were looking for. Room was a good size, modern decor, clean and with good views. Grounds are really well kept and the pool is large and great for kids. You are in easy walking distance of town centre (about 25 mins or 5 mins in cab for 5€) and 5 mins from a beautiful sandy beach. Breakfast selection was fine in terms of quality and quantity (and as long as you get there before 9AM there are no queues), but as we ate out for nearly all other meals cannot really comment on the overall quality (but from breakfast assume it is standard all inclusive fare). Did not have great deal of interaction with staff, but everyone we spoke to were friendly and helpful.

A few quibbles. There is a lack of shade due to insufficient umbrellas (loads of sun loungers, but majority not usable unless you plan to roast all day), we managed to get somewhere shaded most days but this shouldn't be an issue at all. Our room seemed to have thin ceilings as we could hear people above walking about at night (not loud enough to keep you awake, but made me think my kids were up). Sometimes our room was cleaned late in the day (although we found putting the clean me sign on the room expedited things). The kids pool is quite separate from the main pool and the main pool itself has no deep end (it's about 1.2m throughout).

Overall all the main things right and about what I would expect for a four star hotel in this price range.

The reception was light and airy but not welcoming, the team were not very communicative so overall not a good first impression. There were insufficient sunbeds for the number of guests and very little shade. To get shade people reserved beds and although hotel said they were addressing the matter there was no visible sign of this. If we wanted a bed with shade we paid for one on the beach 15e or waited till late afternoon to find one. Pool area lovely but sunbeds looked old and worn and needed a good clean. The room was comfortable with a good balcony overlooking the sea. The cleanliness needs to be addressed dirty windows and balcony glass in need of cleaning not touched the whole 2 wks we were there. Door curtains dirty and stained. Cleaning times were all over the place and sometimes after 4.30 was normal far too late in my opinion. One of the worst aspects was the food quality which was very poor and nearly always cold not what you would expect from a 4 star - unacceptable really. The bar area has the most uncomfortable stools and evening entertainment is poor so much so we only went once in two wks. One positive aspect is the closeness to Lagos itself takes about a 20/25 minute which is pleasant although be careful of the pavements which are made up of small tiles which are extremely slippy. Lagos is a lovely town with a great atmosphere (which the hotel lacks) with lots of wonderful restaurants which are great value for money. If you do visit this hotel then I would suggest go on a B&B basis only and eat out otherwise you will be extremely disappointed. Meal times in the restaurant were chaotic at times and very badly organised. Finding something of quality to eat was a major issue. The restaurant team worked extremely hard but appeared very stressed (lack of help). I think generally the efficiency of the management in the hotel are the problem. This could be a really lovely hotel but it needs work and a great deal of effort to attain this and most certainly a complete overhaul of the food quality and menu.

Dear guest, Thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments and views. At Hotel Vila Galé Lagos, we take our guests’ feedback seriously as this is the only way we can truly measure and continuously improve the service we provide to our guests. It is indeed disappointing that your stay with us has not been outstanding. We apologize for the dissatisfaction you have experienced. We are disappointed to hear you didn’t find our breakfast offerings excellent. We usually receive positive feedback on our comprehensive breakfast selection which features various Continental favorites but it is unfortunate that it was not up to your standards. On a similar note, it is disappointing that you did not find our dining options ideal. Unfortunately, we were unable to impress you in this aspect. Thank you once again for staying with us and providing us with your valuable feedback. We aim to improve and we look forward to serving you better in the future. Kind regards, Aníbal Costa

This was our first holiday as a family with our 4 year old daughter. I must say the hotel looks beautiful and the pool area is spectacular. We went to Lagos with Jet2 from the UK and sadly will be complaining about the misinformation provided on their website about evening entertainment for children (there was none). Thankfully….the Club Nep team saved the day. A massive thank you to Hugo, Daniela, Vanessa, Fabiana and Goncales (sorry for spelling!) who made our daughters holiday amazing. The kids club was quiet but they made her feel special! The kids pool/park area is fantastic here and really made our holiday.

We were bed and breakfast and I am glad this was the case. The breakfast was what you’d expect from a large hotel offering a buffet and lunch options from the pool bar were reasonable. However, meal options for children in the evening were poor.

The rooms were a good size but sadly the housekeeping service wasnt great meaning by the end of the holiday there was a lot of dust in the room and we had ants beginning to appear. We also had an issue with our air con for the first two days. The initial advice was to just turn the system off altogether and it took several attempts for someone to reprogramme it to ‘summer mode’.

The indoor pool was nice but as mentioned in previous reviews you have to wear a swim hat at a cost of €4 euros each. We didn’t mind this. However, we were frustrated when we were challenged on this yet several other families using the indoor pool at the same time were simply let in. The spa manager was not overly polite to us in this situation which was a real shame.

Overall, it is a good hotel and the overwhelming majority of staff were brilliant! Going at the very start of the season was perhaps a draw back but something we will think about on our next trip.

For me, I am rating this 4 stars purely due to Hugo and the team at the kids club. They really made this holiday what we had envisioned for our daughter (who is desperate to return!) I hope these staff are acknowledged for their incredible hard work!

Hotel close to Meia Praia beach, a beach several kilometres long- Walking distance. The rooms are nice and clean. The AC in my room only would work full power or switched off. So the room was too cold at the middle of the night (this was August) and had to wake up to switch off the AC. Nevertheless the my room had views to the beach. Everything was clean in the room, and the personal was attentive and efficient. They offered to extend the check-out time. The hotel is big with entertainment areas and good parking. There is a big swimming pool outside and other heated inside. The outside pool seems more geared towards families with kids. However you may be tempted just to cross the road and go to the beach. Breakfast was nice. I felt safe regarding COVID. Masks mandatory when circulating in common areas. I recommend this hotel indeed.

I am extremely disappointed! I've been traveling all over the country (Portugal) and I am staying in numerous hotels. From 3 stars to 5 stars, and I have never been so disappointed with a hotel as I was with Vila Gale. Upon arriving at the 4-star hotel, my mother and I (I am currently pregnant) had to climb the stairs of the hotel with 4 suitcases because there was no one to help us with our bags. No one at the front desk or any other staff who works at the hotel offered to help. We then took the luggage trolley to put our bags and enter the lobby.
While we were checking in, the man who helped us was extremely grumpy. Clearly, he didn't want to be working. He gave us 1 room key and didn't explain anything about the hotel. Neither the opening hours of the SPA, restaurant, swimming pool, nothing.
After going up with our bags, we went down to get information and how to get around the city and get to the center. The woman who helped us was very friendly.
When we arrived back at the hotel, we wanted to go to the SPA, it was already 7:30 pm, we went to the reception to ask how it would work, as we wanted to rest in the sauna. Another man at the reception who helped us was very rude. He told us that we would have to make an appointment but it would close at 8 pm. Therefore, we did not enjoy anything at the hotel.
We went up to the room, and I called reception asking for a fork, the man who answered wanted to charge me 10 EUROS to bring a fork to my room. As I mentioned, I have stayed in countless hotels in Portugal and around the world, and this has NEVER happened. Mainly because this is supposed to be a 4-star hotel and treat its customers well!!!
Finally, I felt disrespected and the lack of customer care was HUGE. I felt like they didn't want the guests there. We were going to go back to this hotel but decided to go to Tavoli instead.
I DO NOT recommend this hotel! The view is beautiful, the location is good, the breakfast buffet is also very good, but the 5 employees I talked to (except Susana) were extremely rude and rude.

Based on the cost and other reviews, we were very excited to stay at this hotel. However, the overall experience was not great.

Other than the Italian restaurant onsite, the food was horrendous and for exorbitant cost. The additional amenities mentioned upon checkin-in were also poorly maintained, highly expensive and mostly inaccessible. The room was not bad, but the balcony was largely unusable due to the high number of bugs – which also found their way into the room as soon as you opened the door. The staff in the spa area were lovely, but otherwise found the majority of people working there to be dismissive and unfriendly.

The only saving graces for this hotel were the large-sized pool and the close access to the beach.

Overall, my recommendation to potential visitors of Lagos would be to consider a different hotel. It looks beautiful, but the experience was very disappointing unfortunately.
