Detailed Reviews
Stayed here 12-19 March 2020.
Early season booking so expecting things to be a little on the quiet side. Reality was that due to the Coronavirus pandemic Lagos was quickly moving to voluntary lockdown. Local attractions were already closed, shops were closing as a precaution and as the week went on open restaurants were becoming scarce. Even the Adega closed.
It was against this backdrop we enjoyed our short ghost town holiday and somewhat exclusive use of the hotel.
Throughout our stay the staff at the Avenida were great. Always smiling and helpful (although I suspect they must have been a bit bored - there were only 3 rooms occupied as we were leaving).
The hotel is modern, in great location and with good views over to the Marina (if you book a Marina view). It was worth the extra cash. Frosted glass toilet cubical was fine as was the shower enclosure. A shelf above the sink might have been handy for storage.
I observed meticulous hygiene standards being maintained throughout and especially in the restaurant. Sanitiser was available at various locations.
We had a lovely meal one evening in the hotel’s restaurant and enjoyed the food at breakfast. Nothing disappointed my taste buds.
One mistake at check-out (my room account was charged for something someone else had charged) quickly and easily rectified.
Looking forward to returning in 2021 although compared to this visit it’ll no doubt feel less exclusive!
Meantime I hope the lockdown of 2020 is a short one and that the owners and staff at the Avenida are able to welcome guests again very soon.

Currently staying at Avenida hotel in Lagos, don’t normally review however it’s a must. We still have a few nights remaining at hotel but just wanted to say for anyone thinking of booking this hotel, DO IT! Currently staying in room
202 and the views of the Marina and main promenade are spectacular, it’s a great place to chill and watch world go by. The room is bright and spacious along with a massive bed. As people have mentioned rooms are open so keep this in mind if you like your privacy. The breakfasts are nothing like we have had before, you have choice of food from buffet or ordering off the menu. You must try the pancakes/waffles with fruit as it’s the perfect way to start your day. The service in breakfast is also perfect, the staff make you feel welcome and go out their way to make sure you have a great start to your day. The location of this hotel is another great point as within a couple of minutes walk you are in the old town with plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from on the way. As already mentioned you are close to the Marina and you have the choice of plenty of bars and restaurants there also. At the top of the hotel you have access to a sun bed area infinity pool, again the views are amazing and a great place to enjoy the sun. Overall we are delighted with the hotel and will definitely stay again.

Honeslty, after reading some of the TA reviews I was a little hesitant about booking, and yes, I did not get a fabulous marina view, instead we got a view of the car park and market at the back, but I was not promised anything else when I booked. What is important is the quality of the staff at the hotel - absolutely amazing young team, make you feel welcome immidiately on arrival, and always happy to help in perfect spoken English.
I came to Lagos for 3 nights with my 13 year old son to watch the extra Moto GP race and the location of the hotel was perfect. We could walk to the old town in 10 minutes each evening to meet with friends who stayed in Casa Mae, the difference is they paid more than twice what I paid and I do not believe they got twice the value.
Breakfasts were simply delicious, there was a buffet but also a small menu of freshly cooked special dishes - the Avenida Benedict with shrimp was so good I had it twice even if I wanted to try all the options. We had a wonderful waitress serve us personally each day, I believe she was called Marlena, and she was always smiling and happy. On our last morning, the restaurant was very busy so we couldnt walk to a table, instead I started a queue at the entrance door. Some other guests queued behind us and waited, but several other large groups simply ignored the queue and rudely walked past us all waiting and tried to take a table that Marlena was cleaning for us. She politely asked the other guests to go back to the queue, and invited my son and I to the table. She did it professionally, but really made a difference to my holiday and made us feel our custom was valued.
I will return to this hotel for with my family. Yes, it is not a 5 star luxuxury hotel, but it also doesnt charge those prices. For me it delivers the perfect balance and is perfect for my family. Thank you team!

We stayed for three nights .The property is located on a major road opposite the marina with no noise issues whatsoever but is presented in a dingy brown facade , first Impressions are not the best . Check-in is efficient but not very friendly. Baggage services don’t exist with not even a ramp for those of us with several heavy suitcases entrance to the hotel is via two deep steps one of which is a wooden railway sleeper. Our room (204) was very clean and modern ,but was also very small and cramped there was a balcony which was similarly designed .We are normally fortunate enough to travel for about eight months per year usually staying in five tsar hotels or occasionally in four star properties and from our experience our room size did not reflect what we would normally be offered, nevertheless the facilities of the room , connectivity , sleep quality , linen , towels including robes water pressure and toiletries were of a good standard . There is a complimentary breakfast which offers excellent choice ,quality and service given the restrictions of the pandemic even without these restrictions the breakfast would be considered very good.Additionally there is a lap infinity pool on the roof of the hotel which is convenient for those who don’t want the 15 minute walk to the beach via the multitude of souvenir sellers on the promenade. In short the hotel is nothing special and generally has a cluttered and cramped fee but is a good value option although we would not return .

Avenida is a beautiful hotel right on the Marina. We reserved a Superior Marina View room; its was spacious and well appointed. Check in was a breeze and the front office staff are friendly and efficient.
The bath area has separate toilet, shower and sink facilities which is really nice when two people are getting ready at the same time. The shower has a nice overhead rain feature.
I would have given the hotel five stars but the climate control really brought the rating down. When we got to the room it was super hot; the thermostat was set to about 73 degrees F, but it was much warmer. We were leaving anyway, so I turned the thermostat down and opened the balcony door, figuring it would cool down while we were gone. But when we returned a few hours later it was even hotter.
I called the front desk person, who walked me through setting the temperature lower, and even came to our room to fix it, but it didn't work. She gave us a new room but it was just as hot. We later found out the hotel's management shuts off the AC in the winder, which is fine, but whenever the ventilator fans come on, hot air comes out regardless of the setting. The only way to shut off the heat was to leave the balcony door open, cutting off the fan. Although that worked, there was noise from the street below.
The hotel staff were great trying to resolve the problem, and the room itself was lovely. If management out a little thought into guest comfort, it would have been five stars.

Response from Rui Fernandes, Owner at Lagos Avenida Hotel
Responded 7 Dec 2020
Dear Guest, thank you for your review. We really sorry and apolegise for the AC situation. There was in fact a system malfunction that affected all rooms on the floor. Unfortunatelly we had to call the Bosch installers to fix it and it took some time. We still hope you came back, has this was an isolated tecnical situation. Best Regards

From top to bottom, we both loved this hotel! This was our first time in Portugal and we drove straight from Lisbon to start our holiday by the beach and we were not disappointed.
Although our room was not ready when we arrived (we were early by 3 hours), we were invited to enjoy the rooftop pool and we loved the cocktails and snacks served by the amazing bartender up there. We rested for a bit on the lovely poolside bed and then walked into town to get a bite.
Besides our well appointed room with very comfy bed and great view (we were facing the marina). The soundproof windows and room-darkening blinds helped us to adjust to the time change.
The breakfasts are outstanding, the eggs and orange juice were favourites. The town of Lagos, just a 10 minute walk away is charming and has everything you need for a relaxed and casual or fancy sojourn.
We took advantage of having a car to travel to nearby beaches and mini hikes and also highly recommend booking some sort of boat tour to explore the nearby beautiful cliffs.
We stayed 4 nights and highly enjoyed the service provided by the front desk, the housekeeping staff and the breakfast servers.
We loved the decor…kind of a “nautical hygge” vibe and really appreciated the central location. We noticed that the guests were mostly couples/friends and from a variety of locations around the world.
This hotel helped us fall in love with this region!
Thank you to the whole team for helping us to enjoy our first trip to Portugal.

The BUT!!! is due to the fact that the bathroom in the superior rooms are open plan with nothing dividing the bed area. The toilet and shower do have doors but they are frosted glass so no real privacy and for this reason reluctantly, we would not stay again. This aside, the hotel is very well maintained and in a good location with restaurants very close by and only a 5 minute walk into the Old Town. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was especially good as they cooked your breakfast by your own request.

We were very indecisive of where to stay in Lagos but I am glad we chose here! (Also looked at Casa Mae and Hotel Marino Rao for reference). We had a great one night stay during our Portugal Road Trip and were pleasantly surprised with the hotel. All the staff were super friendly and the included breakfast was delicious (a buffet with option to order eggs, pancakes etc.- there is even Champagne included!). I agree with some of the reviews that the shower was weirdly placed in the room- however it had great water pressure and was surprisingly one of the better showers I had during my 1 week Europe trip. We enjoyed wine on our balcony but the lobby would have been a nice place to enjoy it too. The hotel has 3 parking spots in back that you can use for a 10 dollar fee. It was worth it to pay that and very convenient!

Fabulous hotel. The location is great, the electric window blinds keep out any noise - we were on the 1st floor facing the water and heard NOTHING! The room is decorated beautifully but enjoy it when you first arrive because the minute you start unpacking it becomes a mess! There are no drawers or shelves to put things on, just a small closet to hang a few items. I won’t dwell on the bathroom since all other reviews have mentioned it, but after being married for 36 years it really wasn’t a problem for us. We couldn’t stop talking about the breakfast, it was delicious. A lot of variety and the poached eggs were done perfectly. The staff was a little young, and came across a little snooty at times but not enough to dampen the time spent here.

+1
My husband and I stayed here in September 20 just before quarantine was reimposed on Portugal. Location was perfect - convenient for the beach, marina and town. We found the staff to be very friendly and loved our room (405) which was on the top floor overlooking the marina next to the pool. It was spacious and quiet but lacking in storage so it didn’t look very minimalistic once we’d unpacked! The toilet and shower were a bit odd being open plan but ok for us having been married for 26 years! Breakfast was superb - pancakes, French toast & porridge (oatmeal) particularly recommended! We ate in the restaurant one night too and had great meals. We loved the decor and the fact that it was a relaxed non-stuffy atmosphere. Roof top pool was lovely and the views were stunning. It was a shame that the hotel wasn’t busy enough to warrant having the rooftop bar open but we could still order drinks from the restaurant bar.
Definitely will come back as soon as we’re able to!
