Detailed Reviews
This was the first hotel we stayed in on our tour of Holland. It certainly set the standard for our trip. The hotel is set in traditional buildings facing a canal in Old Leiden. We were warmly greeted on our arrival before being shown to our lavishly decorated room. The hotel buildings are narrow and tall like most of the old Dutch buildings and have been sympathetically renovated with many of their original features. This includes the staircase which is steep, narrow and winding. Taking our suitcase up to our room was challenging but we were assisted by the willing receptionist. I have to say it was well worth it, our room was stunning with lovely view over the canal. The room its self was fresh and clean and contained everything we needed for our stay.
Breakfast was optional and we did opt for breakfast, which although it was quite expensive, it was well worth paying for. There was a great choice of hot and cold food and drinks that were all freshly prepared for you. In particular the extensive egg and tea menu's were quite impressive. The breakfast room itself was exquisitely decorated with panels of Dutch landscapes to browse whilst you ate.
Old Leiden was also a beautiful part of the city and our hotel was the perfect base.

I spent many nights at the Boutique Hotel while on business trips in Leiden. It is a unique place where you can disconnect from work and enjoy a peaceful and luxury environment that makes you feeling at home and pampered. Rooms are comfortable, breakfasts are delicious, and environment gorgeous with canals and old Leiden city. Staff and owners are so kind and helpful at any time. Wifi works well for the late evening emails, train station and biosience park are at walking distance. Finally, I brought my family in for a week-end just because I loved the place.

A nice little hotel on the canal very close to the old town and port.
The main members of staff Audrey and her afternoon colleague were excellent. Nothing is too much trouble. The breakfasts are superb in the spacious dining room with a wide range of cooked and buffet choices.
The room we had was a little dated but with a small but functional bathroom but perfectly adequate. There was an unusual room cleaning arrangement whereby you had to ask for new towels & tea/ coffee replenishment etc but it does keep the costs down.
All in all a very good place to stay.

We a couple from Germany wanted to visit this hotel in June 2020 with our mothers (both 80 years old), Because of the Corona crisis, the age of our mothers and the travel warnings we had to cancel our reservation. The GM charged us 50 % cancellation fee, without offering any option e. g. the opportunity to travel later in the year. He was extremely unfriendly. He said to me that I had caused the Second World War and that I am really stupid for not having a suitable travel assurance. I was really upset and totally disappointed about this rude behavior. Not acceptable.

Response from Receptie De Barones, Owner at Boutique Hotel Huys van Leyden
Responded 29 Mar 2021
Dear Guest, How unfortunate you were not able to travel to The Netherlands due to Covid-19, and you have been charged according to your reservation policy. When reading your review we understand you expected to receive a 100% refund. We presume you will understand the world is in crises, and if we could refund, we would have done so. To use the words you wrote, just because we could not offer you what you expected, is extreme. Kind regards, HUYS VAN LEYDEN

Pro : The hotel is on a canal in a quiet part of town close to the centre of this delightful town. The furnishings are attractive and the staff pleasant. There is a plentiful supply of hot water.
Con:
Because of the steep stairs I requested a ground floor room which obviously costs more. The room I was allocated had no window, just a skylight. The space was barely adequate for one occupant. I imagine two would find it difficult.
No cleaning service was provided during my stay and evening meals were not available.
My first visit to Leiden, and I would definitely return. Fortunately there are other hotels.

Absolutely loved everything about the hotel. Beautiful rooms, not big but everything you need. Stairs are steep and narrow, so if you are less mobile take a room on the entrance level.
All rooms look different but they are all super charming. Our room had the bathroom on a separate level and there was no door to close, so perhaps not for everyone, but on the other hand you got the most beautiful bathroom lamp ever.
Great location, good breakfast and very friendly and helpful staff.

Lovely stay. The people are very accommodating, having satisfied our request for a specific downstairs room. The location was excellent, being only five blocks from all the excitement of Centrum. Many pubs and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Breakfast was a good variety of breads, cheese, yogurt, coffee, and eggs.

Full of charm and character and a pleasure to stay for a weekend birthday celebration.
Our room was a brand new apartment, it came with a jacuzzi bath which we were delighted about, a comfy sofa and beautiful kitchen area.
Friday evening we spent in the luxurious dining room for a delicious 4 course meal, and we took the additional option of eating breakfast in the hotel which was beautiful
Staff have been amazing and made our stay very enjoyable we will be back.

+1
Compared to what we were expecting (and the price we paid, 350€ for a night) the hotel room was disappointing but the breakfast great.
We were in the detached house, in the “loft” family room.
While the position is good, the staff is very kind and the building has a great potential, the apartment was a bit neglected, not very clean, needing maintenance - see the pics.
An additional element is that the stairs are extremely steep and the hotel is not taking care of bringing your baggages (we had backpacks, but if we had real suitcases, it would have been probably impossible to bring them up and down the stairs) - see the pic.
The breakfast was simply great! Great à la carte options, all included in the price, a lot of choice and quality food.

The restaurant and common area are very nice but the rooms not so. Small is ok but nowhere to put anything is not. Difficult access and if you have luggage the second floor is a no go. Over rated cooked to order breakfast, Eggs Benedict sans muffin or bread?
