Welcome to Hotel Carillon! We're a small family-run hotel located at the heart of the beautiful city of Haarlem. We've just re-launched this hotel since January 2013 so we don't have many reviews just yet on TripAdvisor. Please allow us to tell you 3 things about our hotel:(1) Great location: We sit right off the central market square. We're 5 minutes walk to the train that takes you to Amsterdam centre in just 15 minutes.(2) Low rates: We offer very low rates for a Haarlem hotel. Our customers come to spend their time out and about enjoying what Haarlem and Amsterdam have to offer. So we are small, clean and provide the best services we can at the very best prices.(3) Great restaurant:Nestled at the ground floor is Restaurant Carillon that is a warm cosy hangout from morning to dusk. We have regular locals from the area that love the food here and even if you don't stay we'd love you to visit for a coffee, beer or evening meal.

Detailed Reviews
Spent a few days in Haarlem recently and stayed at the Carillon hotel at the Grote Market.
The location of the hotel is very good, as the market square is attractive and historically interesting. And it’s where most people in the area gather to socialise, so there are plenty of places to eat, drink and shop.
However, the hotel itself is disappointing. There is no proper reception. To book in you have to call into the restaurant which adjoins it, where one of the bar staff will deal with the paper work and then hand you a bill for the tourist tax! While I realise that the hotel is not responsible for this charge and that it’s down to the local authority, I still resent giving in to blatant extortion.
Our room was at the top of two flights of stairs, the steepest I have ever encountered. And although it was clean it was also a bit run down. The electrics were very `Heath Robinson’ and there were no facilities apart from a television that didn’t work. The beds were uncomfortable and walls thin enough to hear those in the next room stomping and crashing around till the early hours. The en-suit had clearly been designed by a lunatic. It was incredibly small. You couldn’t open the shower door fully as the wash basin was in the way and you would have to be a contortionist to use the toilet.
Would we stay at the Carillon again? No.

This hotel was one of the worst we have ever stayed at. The room was very small with dirty curtains, the shower had no showerhead. The website said they provided breakfast, but they no longer do. They do have a restaurant that serves through lunch and dinner. They don't have a receptionist later in the evening nor in the morning - we went out of the hotel in the in the morning to get breakfast and our room key wouldn't work. We had to wait until someone came along with a phone so we could call someone to come let us in. It didn't take long once we called. The only positive is that the hotel is right in the center. However, the price was way too high.

The location is great and the rooms are acceptable. I had requested a room at "the quiet side" but got a room right up front. It was a Friday night and until 6:00 AM we were kept awake by loud party noises outside.
We were told that breakfast was available at 8:00. It was not until 8:30 that someone showed up and it was finally served around 8:45..
The dinner that we had there was OK.

The most deceitful and unpleasant manager who hides in his office when we complained that few people did not get fed at all! They made us wait and wait and turned our heater off together rid of us as our complaint was justified by waiting staff. He told them to say he gave 10% off each meal but when I checked against the menu..it was the same!! Even the waiter was shocked. The so called manager was like nothing I have seen before! If he's not part of the family business sack him immediately , if he is I'd ask him to wash the dishes and then sack him. Didn't care a toss..

I was at the bar only : messy place, we sat close to a storage of cleaning tools and sanitizers . I ordered from menu a Hoegarden but they gave me (with no notification) an Amstel. When I asked why they said it’s the same . Waiter came twice trying to remove bottles , touching and leaving them since still full, ignoring any covid good sense .

We arrived at 240pm to be told by the unfriendly bar man check in us at 3 ! When we booked in the room was hot and although a budget hotel it was like a scene from hostel!
Very basic small and scruffy !
A 💩on the floor definitely would have cheered the place up!
We sat outside and had a drink which were over priced.
It was so noisy and hot that we didn’t sleep till after 4 am ! Was pleased to leave .
On a positive breakfast was ok and the towels were clean.

This is the ugliest, smelliest, dirtiest rathole I have ever seen. This place is a disgrace and should not have license. Rooms are small, bed likewise. Funghi galore. Paint is coming from the walls. Do not go here!

We stayed at this property on the last night of our trip before flying home. We had trouble finding affordable lodging in Amsterdam and Haarlem for under 300 Euro a night and with no 2 night minimum for this particular Saturday night, so we took this recommendation from our Rick Steves book. Here were my chief complaints:
-Walls are paper thin. You feel like the guests in the adjacent rooms are right next to you in bed.
-Rooms are TINY.
-Rooms are old and run down.
-I feel like they should charge lower prices more comparable to a hostel given the conditions.
Note that stairs are steep and narrow. Not a problem for me, but might be for someone. Wifi is free, but slow. If you get a room facing the square, you will likely not be able to sleep.
In an effort to not be 100% negative, here are a few nice things:
-Breakfast is included in the room rate.
-The location makes it easy to get to all of the attractions in Haarlem on foot or by bike.
-It is pretty close to one of the bus stops that takes you to the airport. Also, only about a 10 minute walk to the train station.
-Check in staff are friendly and will store your luggage until check in.
Haarlem is a gem, but I would not stay here again if I went back to Haarlem.

Reading some comments and seeing pictures it looked such a pretty hotel, well located and reasonable price. Oh my god! I tried two different rooms. First one so small, no light, smelling smoke and kitchen so strong......bed was like for a kid !... Second one was smelling the same, 20 euros more for a bigger bed but even more dirty, with cigarets on the ground, no light close to the bed just on the ceiling, tv as small as my Ipad, no decoration, looked like old and dirty .....you just want to run.....what I did. Now staying in front in the Amadeus hotel, 10 euros more but much much better....At least clean and nice smelling!

I should have been suspicious when this was the only room left in Haarlem at tulip time.
Where to begin? Checked in, knew we were early for a room to be ready, but given a key anyway. Not sure why, as the room had not been made up yet! Came back later to the dumpy, dirty room. One of two reading lamps not working; substitute lamp literally falling apart. Empty white walls with marks on them. Hole in a bed sheet. Hair in a drawer. Had to ask at the front desk for heat (cold night in late April)! Exposed wiring above the door. Taped-up broken mirror. Then, at about 11pm, the dance club next door started thumping techno until at least 2am. (Not the hotel's fault, true, but in fairness the room is really unprintable.) Had to ask for earplugs and of course we got just one pair… there are two of us! Next morning, breakfast okay but vinyl banquette seating worn through to the fabric. All this for 150 euros PER NIGHT!
This may have been a cute place once upon a time, but now a total dungheap. The only black mark on an otherwise delightful visit to Amsterdam and Haarlem. Do not stay at this "hotel"… not even on a double dog dare!

We caught the number 300 bus back from the airport which was about 30 mins but I'm certain a train would have been quicker :)
