Detailed Reviews
To be frank, I had very low expectations ahead of our stay but the Hotel Hortus surpassed them with ease.
Yes it's basic, but it's clean, warm, comfortable and the staff are very helpful.
We stayed in a quad room which had four comfortable single beds, a sink and a shower, with the shared toilet just a few steps away from the door to our room.
Downstairs - traditional Amsterdam stairs which are something to behold! - there is a communal living room, kitchen and smoking area/outside seating. There is tea and coffee making facilities and a vending machine.
The hotel is only a short walk from Dam Square and is in a nice, quiet area and it's one I'd definitely stay in again should we return to Amsterdam.

I stayed here for 3 nights in June with a friend. The room although basic was perfect for our needs. The location is fairly quiet and only a 10-15 min walk to the main tourist areas. The staff were very friendly and helpfully arranged a taxi for our early departure to the airport. Definitely a place to consider for a no frills base while exploring Amsterdam

This is our first time in Amsterdam and chose this hotel from booking.com and it was fantastic . The basic nut clean rooms were perfect for what we needed and the staff were so helpful. As it was our first time in Amsterdam I wanted to feel safe and it definitely lived up to that . The neighbourhood is quiet so we had a good night sleep. One thing that really stood out to us was that they kept our cases safe whilst we went for an explore on our last day . Thank you so much to the staff at hotel hortus for making our first time in Amsterdam the best!

This is our 5th/6th time in Amsterdam, we stayed in Hotel Hortus from end of June to start of July, this was our favourite location we stayed in. We were about 5 minutes on a tram to Amsterdam Central and the Red Light, and you have Overkant Coffee shop across the road too. Room was modern and clean, fresh towels provided whenever needed also. Staff were really friendly and you can smoke in the terrace until 10pm, we will definitely be returning :) no problems whatsoever

We stayed for 6 nights at the top floor, the stairs were a challenge but we didn’t mind it much, the room was clean and comfy, the beds were great and we were comfortable.
The area is quiet and cute, very nice.
It was a bit too warm in the room at times and there’s no air conditioning but there was a fan so most of the time it was fine.
The staff was great, we only had trouble with one staff member that was very rude to us but the other staff were so wonderful they made up for it.
I really recommend staying there if you can handle steep stairs with small steps and don’t mind walking a bit or taking trams to get places😄

The hotel was fantastic, staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean, you are provided with towels and a hair dryer, the toilets are communal but are still very clean. I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would return back here. The centre was a 15 minute walk to the centre which is not too far. There is a tram stop near the hotel.

In line with another review on here, for some reason I wasn't expecting much from this hotel but it far exceeded expectations. We'd picked it pretty much on price alone, figuring it was just somewhere to sleep for a couple of nights. On the map for some reason it looked a little far from the centre. But in practice it was easily walkable, and we loved the neighbourhood. The staff were super friendly and everything was great. Starting with arriving early to find our room was ready anyway. And ending with being able to leave our bags after check-out while we visited the zoo around the corner. It really was a great stay. There are many good places for breakfast within easy walking. Yes the stairs are steep and it's a shared toilet but neither of these things were a problem for us, especially given the price in an expensive city. Fab!

We stayed for 6 nights and the hotel is very clean and the staff is super super nice and especially our favorite woman who showed us where the lighter was. I love her friendly attitude, such a nice woman and always smiling.
If you have bags, do not stay on 3.floor unless you are getting ready for crossfit competition. 😆
-- DOWNSIDE--
I am not going to lower the stars in review for one staff member. This guy with the Cap and American accent was plainly unpolite and rude. We were really surprised by the attitude by this man generally and thank God he ony worked 2 days when we were there. The other staff is so friendly and helpful, and he just seems to be the total opposite.

Location of this hotel is best. Rooms are tiny, dont have private washrooms attached with them. This is more close towards being a hostel. Breakfast is average. If you are looking for a comfortable place - this is not but if you are on budget and looking for a roof - it is it.

I stayed here with my girlfriend here last august, booking was very conveinient. On the map it seemed like a way from the centre, it really wasn't, 3 minutes on the tram from central station and only 15 minutes walk even in a right state!
about 5 minutes until you get by shops/bakeries etc then another 5 to the edge of the red light district and coffee shops.
It's right next to the Hortus Botanicus and Zoo, and on a couple of main tramlines, near some nice cafes, a couple of small chilled grassy areas/parks nearby. the hostel has a back yard that gets some sun. Cool front room with all sorts of sporting memrobilia, a pool table, bongs, free internet access.
The rooms are the only slight let down due to having thin walls and can sokmetime be a bit noisy if someone is getting their end away (luckily the guy in the room next to us was a one minute man so only kept us awake for a second!!)
but theyre clean, the one we stayed in was a decent size and had a semi-decent view. I've booked to go back for a whole week during the world cup.
Right i'm rambling now, but basically there are some whinging people who have rated this place, who expect the ritz for £19 a night. Don't listen. I HIGHLY recommend the Hortus due to value for money and superb location. If you don't fancy drug dealers on your doorstep but having all the action within 10 mins stumbling time this is the place for you!
See you at the Greenhouse!

It’s not a smoking hotel, but you are allowed to smoke whatever you want outside in the garden or on the fronts
