Hotel Die Port van Cleve is a famous Dutch hotel located directly behind the Royal Palace & facing Dam Square. Due to its central location, you will find many touristic and cultural sites within walking distance. Hotel Die Port van Cleve has a rich history. Heineken opened its first brewery in this building in 1864. Hulscher's restaurant is famous for its numbered steaks and Bar-Bodega ‘De Blauwe Parade’ has an unique Delft blue tile fresco dating from 1887. The rooms are decorated with references to the authentic tile fresco in the bar. In 2020 due to its 150 anniversary around 20 rooms were renovated and are now themed with one of our six memorable moments. The ground floor is entirely renovated.

We were greeted by the staff at the front desk promptly and they had our rooms ready at 1:30 p.m. (check in was not suppose to be until 3), they even upgraded one of our rooms. We were on a quick stay, for one night and wanted to take in as much scenery as we could. We asked the concierge and he helped us with a game plan. The rooms were so nicely decorated, the beds (wow) they were so so comfortable. The restaurant at the hotel had the most polite staff, you must have the HOT Chocolate its the Best I have ever had. We also had dinner at the restaurant, the steak was mouth watering and the red wine divine!!! Location was also 10/10 could walk over to Red light District in 7 minutes and the Anne Frank Huis in like 5 minutes the other way. We did a canal tour by Kinboat, had the best tour guide, It was 20.00 for an hour, beverages on board if you wish and he(Derek) was so knowledgeable. For only being in Amsterdam for 24 hours it was amazing and can't wait to go back in the future!

2nd time we stayed here with a Flairbon (45 eur per person per night). Breakfast was EUR 19 pp (because I had sent an email in advance to make a reservation). On site this would be EUR 22 per person. You will receive a voucher of EUR 7.5 per person to use in the restaurant or bar. The staff is very friendly. Check-in was possible in Dutch. We arrived early and were allowed to leave our luggage while we explored the city. Suddenly I got an email around 1pm letting me know our room was ready (normally not until 3pm). When we arrived, they had put all our luggage in our room. Top!
I thought the hallway to our room was dirty. Stains on the carpet and you could just tell that it needed to be renewed. Luckily there was no carpet in the room. The window of our room was taped shut because it was broken. (It no longer closed 100% completely, causing drafts and noise to enter.) We removed the tape in the morning to open our window and then taped everything closed again in the evening. Okay for a temporary solution, but please fix this when the hotel is a little less busy.
Very nice room. Small, but we knew this and didn't bother us. You could watch Netflix and YouTube on TV. There was 2 bottles of water, 6 coffees, mints and sweets as a welcome. The room was dark, which we found very nice and cozy.
Not only the staff is an asset of this hotel, but also the location. Right in the center, close to everything. Albert Heijn a few meters away. We parked our bicycles near the entrance.
We will definitely come back here.

We agonized over what hotel to choose in Amsterdam, trying to balance cost, location and room/bathroom size, finally deciding on Die Port van Cleve and are so glad we did!
We stayed 5 nights in a Comfort Room and it was very spacious, although we would have liked more counter space in the bathroom (but that is par for the course in Europe).
The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, and their recommendations were spot on.
The location is fantastic: very walkable to everywhere we wanted to visit.
We also loved the pub attached to the hotel, De Blauwe Parade: a great place for drinks and small bites (their bitterballen is a MUST).

Dear R&M, Thank you for sharing your lovely review following your visit to Hotel Die Port Van Cleve. I am thrilled that after your delibrations you chose us and that you were able to appreciate so much of what is on offer from our hotel. Our convenient location is right in the historic heart of Amsterdam and within walking distance of hotspots like the Hermitage Museum, the lively Rembrandtplein with its cosy cafés and restaurants, and the world-famous canals. I am also delighted to see that you were very comfortable and happy with your room despite the bathroom counter space size. Please know that we have larger rooms available, which may be more comfortable during your next stay. Our front desk team works hard to ensure that all of our guests are satisfied with the service they receive, I am therefore so glad to see that they impressed you with their knowledge of the surrounding area. Finally, I am gratified to see that you had fun at De Blauwe Parade and that it no doubt contributed to your fantastic review. Please don't forget to recommend us to your friends and family, and don't hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to prepare for your next stay. Where do I begin with this outstanding hotel? Understanding that this historic building has many different sized rooms and layouts, I can only comment on our room, which was a twin superior (#125). The room was very large, with 4 or 5 large windows letting in plenty of light. The room had a comfortable couch and chairs for relaxing after a long day on your feet. Plenty (!) of room for your luggage and storing of your clothes and other items. The bathroom was spotless, The beds were comfortable, if not spectacular. Now, I will say this, this room is right on the street, 1 level up from ground. The view was fantastic, with the church, the palace and all the street life below. However, be forewarned, the noise from the trams is an issue. They don't stop until around 12 or 12:30 at night. But we had ear plugs and since we walked 7-10 miles a day, we didn't find it a problem at all, we were exhausted most nights. A final thought on the room: Housekeeping did a wonderful job, the room was always spotless. The breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Hulscher's, was just fantastic, and for us, totally worth the money. What a great selection of items to choose from, and the scrambled eggs were always on point, every morning. The Blauwe Parade bar was a perfect place to drink a beer and relax after a long day. The staff was always friendly and helpful, and professional in the best way. Finally, it must be said. The location! Wow! how can you beat it? Impossible. Train station is an easy 15 minute walk. All the sights are a 30 minute walk or less. There are restaurants, bars and shops galore all around you. There is a convenient Albert Heijn supermarket right next door for whatever items you may need after a long day. All in all, the location is perfect. So, thank you to everyone at the Die Port Van Cleve for our 6 nights in Amsterdam. I cannot recommend you hotel more highly, and I wouldn't stay anywhere else when I return to the spectacular city of Amsterdam. Thanks for a great stay.

Dear Stevey, What a pleasure it is to read your candid review following your visit to Hotel Die Port van Cleve! I am delighted that you had a wonderful experience in your spacious and comfortable room. Our housekeeping team will be thrilled to hear your kind words regarding our cleaning protocol. The downside of our central location is that you can be disturbed by street noise. I am happy to hear that with the ear plugs and your busy schedule, you did not have any problems falling asleep. For the lighter sleepers, we also have rooms at the back of the hotel, which are much quieter. However, they do not have a view of the Royal Palace and the New Church. Furthermore, I am glad that you took the time to enjoy our delicious breakfast buffet and to visit our cosy and historic bar, De Blauwe Parade. Thank you for choosing our hotel, I realise you had many other options in Amsterdam. I greatly appreciate your recommendation, and we all look forward to welcoming you again soon. When you make your next reservation, please contact us directly so that we can give you the best rate. Felt cost very expensive as you are charged an additional fee for city taxes on arrival which added another $180+. Room we were allocated was on third floor but outside the main building, which is not ideal. It was a large room, but being on the front street you hear the tram until finishes just after midnight. A room at the back would be better as back street quieter. Breakfast is an option at Hulscher's but is 22.50 euro, which I thought was expensive. There are other options in the area that are cheaper. The tram is almost out front and it's only 15 minutes to Central Station. The lifts are a little slow, and the stairs are very steep. Wouldn't stay here again would choose somewhere outside city limits to avoid taxes and use the tram for travel.

Dear KinAsiA, Let me start by thanking you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us, at Die Port van Cleve Hotel. I am pleased that you liked our central location, opposite the Royal Palace and close to public transport. The disadvantage of being in the centre is that there will always be noise from the street. Please know that you can always request a quiet room when making a reservation, and we will do our utmost to accommodate you accordingly. Regarding the city and tourist tax, I am sorry you did not notice the amount when booking your room. I hope it did not cause too much of an inconvenience. Thank you for your feedback, and I hope you had a lovely time exploring Amsterdam. Die Port van Cleve is an historic hotel in the very heart of Amsterdam. Despite being right on the tram and bus line, the room was very quiet due to being next to an interior courtyard. The room was smartly modernized, with excellent WiFi, flat screen TV, a coffee machine (with complimentary stroopwaffels), and a bright modern bathroom. The hotel restaurant, Hulscher's, is charming and bright, and moderately priced. We had fish and chips, and shrimp croquettes, but the specialty is a "numbered" steak which the restaurant tracks to count the steaks served to customers over the years. The staff speaks excellent English and the concierge, Meindert, was exceptionally helpful in finding local restaurants for us. He also mailed us back our car keys, discovered by an honest housekeeping staff! There is also an hotel bar, which we unfortunately did not visit. Highly recommend!

This is an excellently located hotel right next to a tramline that runs from the train station to the museum quarter, concert hall etc. The staff were most helpful during our stay and we slept very soundly every night. We had been warned beforehand that there were major refurbishment works going on - and that the bar/restaurant would be closed during our stay. The ground floor area and one of the two lifts definitely showed all the signs of this! The dining area had reopened for breakfast during our stay but sadly the bar had not but looked fabulous from the outside - blue tiles and wood panelling. Given the state of the hotel at the time of our visit we felt that the room rates were far too high but then hotel prices at the time of our visit were very high everywhere so it was a seller's market. This hotel is all about location, location, location. That's what matters in the end.

We stayed 2 nights, the objective of the visit was to see the Vermeer exhibition. While some of us had visited Amsterdam a few times before, on this visit due to limited time we wanted a place to stay close to the tram lines / routes we wanted to use. The hotel is coming to end of a makeover, and we had 2 twin bedrooms in the front of the hotel. It was really nice to have been allocated rooms as we arrived early morning. There was a short flight of 4 steps from hallway and bathroom to the bedroom area. The window in 1 room was above eye level, which made the room quite dark. The other room's lighting was more successful as it had both a skylight and window. There are only 2 or 3 of these room layouts at hotel front, most twins are in newer part and bathed with light. But this is all part of the challenges of an old hotel where you have to deal with how it was built years and years ago, with conservation rules etc. Perhaps in times where sustainability was not an everyday word, some clever daytime lighting would have resolved this problem. You could hear the trams and see the windows of the Cathedral . It was a very quiet hotel at night so a great sleep was had by all. We had not booked breakfast, but we're given vouchers to reduce cost by 33% and it was a good and plentiful breakfast in Huscher Restaurant. The bar was due to reopen the following week and looked magnificent. Definitely worth a visit. Overall, despite a small glitch over late checkout request which was resolved, it was a great stay, but not inexpensive. For a 2 night stay it was worth the extra for the convenience and suitability for our needs.

Entrance - Very easy to find, literally in the middle of city centre - great location!
Food - I only booked the room so did not eat here only had a beer which was lovely.
Decor - Very modern, painted well, nice decoration in the bar area and restaurant. My only critique is the outdated TVs you have in the hotel rooms. For the price you pay you’d expect to get a decent TV with more than one English channel - it was disappointing to say the least.
Atmosphere - Good, everyone looked happy, it was a nice atmosphere overall.
Cleanliness - Very clean and tidy, including the toilets could not fault it.
Cost - in total for 2 nights it cost about £291 which is a good price for the location.
Customer service - all staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and anything you needed they helped! I left with a good taste in my mouth.
Overall - 9/10 I would return. It was a fab hotel with fab people just wish the TVs were better!! I look forward to coming back!
