The host was super nice and we instantly felt welcome the second we stepped through the door.
The relationship between the staff seems like they are one big, happy family, all working together.
You could really feel that vibe in the hotel, which we absolutely loved.
Our room was already done and we were able to check in even though we arrived 2 hrs before the regular check-in time.
The location is more than great, because it's based right in the city center/red light district.
even though there was quite a lot going on, the room was quiet and also really comfortable.
Everything was perfectly clean and even the shared bathroom didn't bother us at all.
On our last day we decided to stay for an extra-night, which was also no problem at all!
We were able to keep the room we were staying in, and also were allowed to keep the room as long as we wanted into the day.
In the end we had a lovely time in the Anco hotel with all of the staff and we won't have to find a place to stay for our next trip, because we know EXCACTLY where we'll be staying.

The hotel business is all about hospitality, its where people go for a rest and a break - to be spoilt. We were not looking for any special treatment but the attitude and manner of these people leave alot to be desired. You don't pay to stay in a hotel where the staff do not communicate to you, where you feel you are a nuicance and you certainly don't want to be shouted at or humiliated. I or my partner would certainly never return there again.
The hotel itself is well maintained and the location is good but the engine of the hotel - it's staff should not be in this business.
Amsterdam is a lovely city but this experience has left a very bad taste with us. Surley they know that they are not the only gay hotel in Amsterdam. It is very disappointing to be treated like that and having to pay for such an experience. The tourist board in Holland should pay a visit to this non hospitable establishment.
Anco was taken over recently. The staff and management shouldn't be anywhere near hospitality jobs.
They made me feel uncomfortable at every level.
There is a member of staff who abused me when I asked him to call me a Taxi to go back to the airport. The member of staff refused to make the call as "I wouldn't make any money in commission" Surely my hotel bill would of been enough. I suggest that since the change over I'd avoid this place at all costs.
The only problem we had was with noise. As it is in the red light area, there are prostitutes all around and these attract gangs of noisy young straight guys, some in cars with music pounding. There are also lots of drug dealers. Personally I didn't feel all that safe walking back to the hotel.
In the hotel, there's a lot of movement with guys cruising each other - any room with an open door can attract attention and so be prepared for very little sleep.
Until last year, the hotel was an exclusive 'men only' gay hotel. Everyone staying there was gay which made it unique and gave great opportunities to meet like-minded guys. The hotel is now "gay friendly", claiming that 80% of residents are gay, but having spent a week there I can categorically dispute that claim, as it was probably closer to 5-10%.
The vast majority of residents when I was there, were groups of young straight males or females in their 20s, late-teens. The resulting noise when they would come back drunk at 3 or 4am was unbearable. They would stand in the 3rd floor smoking area every night laughing, talking loudly, shouting and listening to music, leaving me unable to sleep. This was every night, not just one night. The staff go home at 8pm so there is no-one to challenge this behaviour. Eventually around 5am the noise would fade and I could eventually sleep, that is until around 8am when the receptionist would usually decide to stand in the courtyard speaking on his phone, in a loud booming voice to once again, waken me up. Other guests would then go for breakfast and smoke in the same courtyard, chatting and adding to the noise. Once again, I would fall asleep for maybe 30 minutes, until the cleaner came on duty as he likes to sing - loudly - every morning, the same song! Then the icing on the cake: the hotel is directly opposite a church whose bells go off every 15 minutes lasting for over a minute every time.
The rooms themselves are clean and have been redecorated recently, however my single room had a bizarre layout. The bed didn't face the TV, and you couldn't just move the pillow to the other side as there was no wall to lean against. There is a storage unit at the base of the bed which at 6ft tall, I constantly kicked in the middle of the night. There were many channels on the TV, but unfortunately all of them with the exception of 3, were unwatchable as there was interference across the screen!
The staff are friendly, especially the owners, and I am guessing that commercial pressures has caused the change from gay-only to 'all are welcome', but it was the gay-only tag which made it worth its price-tag. Unfortunately the hotel is now nothing more than a youth hostel, and a grossly overpriced one at that.
I was so exhausted from lack of sleep, that I checked out a day early, losing my money for the last night, purely so that I could get a good night's sleep.
As I've said, I am saddened at having to write this review, having spent many wonderful times here, but it would never stay here again, even if it was offered to me for free. I appreciate that people come to Amsterdam to party, but no-one can last 6 nights with no sleep! 79 Euros per night for a 'youth hostel' with shared bathroom is extortionate. On my last night, I stayed in a nice 3.5* hotel with my own private bathroom, a double-bed, and very little noise, for the sum of 58 Euros.
Finally, it is also worth mentioning again that after 8pm, there are no staff in the hotel. If you happen to leave your room, even to go to the shared toilet and forget to take your room key, you will be stuck outside for the remainder of the night.
Thanks for the memories Anco, but unfortunately I will not be back.
