Detailed Reviews
I stayed for a week in the Palais Kraft hotel in Zurich, on a business trip. Wonderful hotel, especially if you're looking for something a little different. The thing is, no one in Zurich, including the cab drivers, has ever heard of the place. That's because the hotel is just one floor of a much larger building that houses a liposuction clinic, among other businesses. But don't let that put you off. The advantages of it more than make up for it. The few rooms that make up the Palais are:
1. Spotlessly clean and excellently maintained.
2. They have kitchennettes with stove, dishwasher, expresso machine, and full size refrigerator. And the room comes with a cell phone that you can carry with you and use for local calls.
3. The fridge is kept stocked with soda, beer, wine, whiskey, ice cream, chocolate, juice, yogurt, bottled water and other things. And fresh fruit, potato chips, and coffee are always stocked to the room as well. And all of it, is free. That's right, FREE. And breakfast (juices, breads, yogurt, cereal, milk, etc) is placed outside your door each morning.
4. The rooms have wireless internet access and many have direct patio access.
The guy who runs the place, Martin Frank, is the extremely helpful and always available for any needs. I've never been in a hotel with better service. The price was 330CH a night.
So if you don't mind having to explain to your cab driver that, yes, that big white building at 33 Kraftstrause actually contains a hotel, try the place out!

I travel a fair amount on business and this hotel is probably the best I've stayed in in terms of quality, cleanliness and service. Rooms are immaculate and as one of the other reviews states, includes a kitchenette fully stocked with snacks, cereal, beer, wine, champagne, juices, milk etc. and a superb coffee machine - all of which is complimentary. Wireless internet is also included as is use of the sauna and mountain bike hire. The host, Martin Frank is so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.
It makes such a change to find a hotel that doesn't try to catch you out with hidden extra's. Unless you really need to be in the town centre I would pick this hotel every time.

In late 2008 / early 2009, when in central Zurich for business, I stayed at a number of hotels in different places. Of all the places in my 3 months there, Palais Kraft stood out in my memory as something a bit different, a bit out of the ordinary, so when I went back to Zurich for a short break with my wife it made sense to go back there.
It's certainly an esoteric place. Unless you know the specific name it won't turn up on many website searches for hotels / guesthouses in Zurich, and it doesn't even look like a hotel from the outside. It's in quite an exclusive residential area, so it's quiet apart from the churchbells at nearby Kirche Fluntern. There are only three guest rooms in a six-floor mansion block with giant pillars fronting it, meaning it feels very exclusive to enter.
The location is excellent for quick easy access to the city via tram or bus but far enough out of the very centre to be quiet in the evenings. The room we had was fairly spacious, with a shared shady patio at the back and a pleasantly-decorated bathroom sporting a shower with such strong water pressure it bordered on wire-wooling your skin.
The room also had a kitchenette, meaning if we wanted to we could self-cater - there was a hob and an oven with basic cookware available. It also had a fridge stocked to the gills with water, Coke / Diet Coke, Red Bull and lager - this is not a mini-bar; it is included in the price of the room. As the weather was scorching for our visit, being able to take a litre or two of chilled water with us as we explored the city was a lovely touch.
Breakfast was simple but tasty, and the general service was sporadic but quick to help and friendly. One of the staff had an adorable dog who apparently lived on-site - a very enthusiastic addition to the team, I'd say!
The downsides are limited but crucial. The first one is the price - like all places in Zurich, it's not cheap. The room we had was 330 CHF per night, which at present exchange rates was around £250. We had to ask for a couple of things that you'd hope would be in the room as standard, such as a hairdryer, and also the pillows were far too soft, meaning your head just collapses into them like you're drowning. Perhaps more of an issue is the fact that the proximity of the patio means the room can get a few insects in it - there's nothing that the staff can really do about this, but it does detract from the gleaming white walls and wood flooring if there are insects defiling them.
To be honest, these are minor quibbles. In some ways, the best aspect of Palais Kraft is the fact that it doesn't feel like a hotel: it's not a sterile environment with all the rooms looking the same and the same experience 365 days a year. It feels like having your own serviced appartment for a few days - and for me that makes it far more welcoming to come back to. I'd recommend it as a slightly quirky alternative for a trip to Zurich.

This is definitely the place to stay if you ever visit Zurich. A great hotel in a very beautiful part of the city with rooms that can be easily described as self contained apartments. Each room comes with its own utility room, bedroom, fully equipped kitchen and garden. There is a full size fridge which is restocked daily with drinks (beer, soft drinks, wine etc.) included in the price of the room. The breakfast is delivered every morning to your room and is fresh and well presented. The hotel also has a secure car park operated with swipe cards which is free of charge. The hotel manager and staff are very friendly and they will make you feel like home. There are also a couple of mountain bikes for the guests. The city centre is only about 10 minutes by tram and transport in Zurich is very punctual and regular.

Palais Kraft can be a residence or a hotel - depends on what you are looking for. And they have choices of apartments and guest rooms. Kitchen is filled with plenty and variety of beverages. Breakfast is served to the room or have fun making your own breakfast with their supply.
You can have housekeeping to do your laundry or make use of the in-room washer & drier to enjoy more private stay.
The host Mr. Martin Frank is a writer and well-travel who enjoys so much having international guests. He makes us feel like friends rather than guests in the house.
If you are looking for accommodation experience unmatched by others in Zurich - this is the place. They have more long-term renters than short-stay travelers, that's why Palais Kraft is a little less-known.

The owner of Palais Kraft is a very nice and friendly guy but he is basically checked out and lets the staff run the place. I stayed there almost two months in a large 3 bedroom apt. While the apartment was nice the place had numerous issues.
a) They said they would clean three times a week but only came two times
b) They didn't have enough dishes and would chide us if we used too many. Given the very high cost and the fact that the dishes were from Ikea I can't believe they just didn't buy more
c) Breakfast was supposed to be served at 8am each morning but was regularly late - when you have jet lagged kids who have been waiting for breakfast for hours this is unacceptable. When it was served some days there was no juice, some no tea, some no cold water. The selection was very poor.
d) The Internet was very very very slow most evenings. It was in fact virtually un-usable. Seems like someone on the staff must have been downloading movies or something.
e) The main person Mai - who is onsite to handle any issues is quite rude and always seemed annoyed when you asked him for anything.
f) They had promised they would keep the fridge stocked with Milk, cheese, etc. but didn't.
g) BTW the place is very near to the church and the bells are quite loud. After a week we got used to it - except for the 7am bell which rings for 15 minutes continuously.
I explained this to the owner and he said it was the first time they had so many guests and the staff struggled to manage it all. He said please forgive us but in the end he knew he was going to have that many guests and didn't staff up.
I would not stay here again.

Wonderful accommodation in a truly gorgerous building and staffed by exceptional people. This was like staying in a five star hotel but better. Had beautiful outdoor access with enormous coloured balls which lit the area. The accommodation was like a studio apartment with a small kitchenette and a fridge stacked with complimentary everything. The bedding and bathroom were first class including the very large bathroom again with first class deco. The icing on the cake was the tram stop just about outside the door for the short ride dowhill right into Zurich, You will not be disappointed!

We had a very pleasant stay in the 2BR "Van Buren" apartment for four nights before heading up to the Berner Oberland. Would highly recommend the apartment. See below for more details.
Location: Palais Kraft is located in Kreis 7 about a mile uphill from the River Limmat just past the Universität Zürich near Toblerplatz. The neighborhood is very quiet -- a positive or negative depending on your point of view. While there are a small Migros grocery and a SPAR market very close by, the neighborhood is otherwise rather devoid of many restaurants and shops. However, it's a reasonable walk down to the center of the city. Another option is taking the frequent Tram #6 which will whisk you down to the Central/Hauptbahnhof area. Certainly a good option on the return home as it's quite an uphill climb.
Building: Palais Kraft is a somewhat modern building (built in the mid 1990s) but built in a Neoclassical style with very high ceilings. The building has private apartments as well as a couple of medical clinics and of course some serviced apartments for short-term stays. We stayed in the 2BR "Van Buren" apartment on the main level as you enter from Kraftstrasse. FYI the other 2BR apartment ("Madison") is the one in the photos with the grand piano and is more at a garden level one floor below.
Bedrooms/Bathrooms: A larger bedroom with en suite bathroom is located on the back side of the apartment away from the street and is very quiet. Its large, marble-tiled bathroom has a tub/shower combo as well as a toilet and lavatory. The second smaller bedroom is located on the front of the building and has an en suite shower. Its lavatory/toilet are located in the hall near the main door to the apartment. While generally very quiet as well, the tram does pass by outside the window frequently from early morning to late at night. The temperature in the apartment was quite comfortable with windows and doors open in early June.
Kitchen: The kitchen is spacious with a cooktop, oven, dishwasher and full-size refrigerator. It's reasonably equipped with basic cookware and utensils and plenty of wine glasses. Aside from salt there are no spices, oils, vinegars, or food items of any kind. The coffee maker is a Nespresso machine and four capsules are supplied each day. Washer and dryer are also in the kitchen. Laundry tablets, dishwasher tablets and liquid dish soap are provided.
Living Areas: The living room is quite spacious and light-filled surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors. Seating is comfy. A dining table at one end near the kitchen. A long, narrow balcony along one side is a pleasant place for coffee in the morning. While one can see through the trees toward downtown Zürich, I would not say there is particularly any "view."
Technology: Wi-fi was fast, reliable and easy to access. Living room has a huge flat screen TV. There are few power outlets, so a power strip is quite useful to keep devices charged.
Cleanliness: The apartment was immaculately clean upon arrival. A friendly cleaner came in every morning and kept it that way.
Security: The neighborhood itself is very safe. It gets very peaceful in the evenings. Key card access is required to enter the building and of course to enter the apartment itself. The apartment is actually above the surrounding ground level, so it's very safe leaving windows open in the evening.
Owner/Manager: EMA House took over management of the serviced apartments earlier in the year. They were exceptionally easy to deal with and always responsive to questions. The booking process went smoothly. We were met at the apartment as expected (even though our flight was a bit late) and everything about the apartment was explained upon our arrival. Payment went smoothly as well. Can't say enough good things about the EMA House staff.

First impressions of this apartment were good. Well located for public transport.
There is a lack of communication between staff. After numerous emails to their info email address which different members of staff reply to, they managed to mess up the billing and charged my Singapore credit card when I had specifically asked them not too.
The cleaning is abysmal. The apart service gold package is supposed to include cleaning daily and linen change every 4 days.
The cleaners can't be bothered. They would spend under 10 mins in the apartment. They had to be promoted to change the linen every 4 days and then would get moody about it. One cleaner in particular would use the same cleaning cloth on the rims of toilets to also clean sinks and taps and work surfaces. Needless to say I got violently ill with a stomach bug within days of arriving.
I saw cockroaches in the kitchen, living room and bedroom.
Two weeks before I left, I went to their reception which is located in another part of Zurich, to specifically to tell them about this and I showed them pictures of the cockroaches.
Again, they couldn't be bothered and said there was nothing they could do and that this is normal for Zürich. They said they crawl through open windows. I found this very strange as I've been to Zurich before and my husband is a frequent traveller to Zurich and has never experienced this.
I shortened my stay in the end. Two days before I was supposed to depart a cockroach crawled across my sons pillow. We left the next morning. I think this may have promoted them to finally look into the cockroaches - but it should not have taken them two weeks to do this!
I've now moved into my own apartment in Zurich - minutes away from the serviced apartment and I have the windows open permanently. I haven't seen a single cockroach so it's apparent this is not the norm for Zurich. They obviously had an infestation but couldn't be bothered to do anything about it.
I wouldn't advise anyone to stay here.

Response from Urs S, Director at Palais Kraft
Responded 30 Sept 2016
Hello Dee! Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at an EMA House Palais Apartment. We regret to hear that your stay experience was negative throughout, and that there was no trace of a positive aspect while staying with us. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused due to the credit card charge. However, as previously explained, we had no other means of charging the amount overdue at that point in time. Our Service Desk Team tries to deal with and answer to all our customers’ requests as quickly as possible, which is why different people sometimes work on one enquiry. We have handover procedures in place to ensure that all team members are aware of ongoing items. We are sorry if this may not always have worked in your specific case. As for your input on our cleaning service, we shall certainly look into the various mentioned points and see to it that any possible shortcomings are being corrected immediately. Palais Kraft is situated in a garden like setting with trees, bushes etc. around the entire building – a small natural oasis in a bustling city. In summer time this calls for insects of all kinds, in a higher intensity compared to a concrete city building without any green zones in the neighbourhood. The property care takers are taking justifiable and sustainable measures to limit the negative impacts of having insects and certain bugs coming into the building from the outside. We stayed for a week at the Roosevelt Apartment, six people very comfortably. Martin Frank and his staff (John in particular) were very helpful. We needed a few things repaired in the apartment, and everything was taken care of quickly and professionally.
Our apartment was cleaned daily by a helpful crew. We were provided with access to the indoor garage, so our driver could pick us up comfortably.
The Roosevelt Apartment is large and bright. You can walk one block in two different directions to get to local supermarkets as well as delicious pastry shops. The tram in front of Palais Kraft takes you straight to the city centre in seven minutes!
A great experience, which we highly recommend.
