Detailed Reviews
We got this hotel as a part of the package for our train trip through Switzerland. There is a reason the Railbookers billeted us at this hotel. For one, it is a 5 minute walk from the train station, the next being in the heart of Old Town which means walking distance to everything. The room is very quaint/Swiss Old Town style but very efficient. Your views are the rooftops of the historic buildings. The staff is very friendly and breakfast is included. This is perfect for exploring and very convenient.

When I decided to book this hotel it was based on location and there was a photo/video of chocolate being made just like at the Lindt chocolate museum.
Upon entering I thought for a second I was in the cafe/dining area until a sweet young man asked if he could help. I hesitated because I was wondering why would the cashier be able to help check me in. Joke’s on me 😂😂😂 He was the receptionist and I was in the dining/front office of the hotel. He was very helpful and sweet.
Of course it was early and room wasn’t ready so I went for a walk while they held my bags. The place is real cute and quaint. Very clean and organized and a stone throw away from the main train terminal.
The rooms were very cute and I think each room had its own unique decor, which I loved. I wanted a quiet room which I got. It looked out onto a main road, but noise was at a minimum. The only thing I possibly heard was a siren now and again. There were a couple of things that I didn’t like much, but not a big deal. The first was the shower/bath. The first day I got in it, I almost broke my neck. That curve in the back of the bath was not far back so stepping in I almost lost my balance and went down. Thank goodness the shower door held in place. So be careful when stepping into their bathtubs & getting in the tub, the step up is too high.
Second thing was, I’m not sure if they use odorless cleaning supplies, but my room had a smell almost that of a hospital. It was raw like and had a slightly unpleasant odor. Not horrible but my sensitivity to that was not great. Overall the room was fantastic and my stay was really good. Would recommend for sure.
In room safe. Coffee/tea maker. Bathroom toiletries. Small tv. Elevator.

Room and bathroom very small, simple breakfast but everything was very good. Chocolate source to taste when you want. Well in the center close to many restaurants, bars and shops.
Close to the central train station. It is very easy to get there. You do everything on foot calmly

We stayed in this hotel for one night due to the rave reviews we read on this website and its close proximity to the train station. The decor was as clean and bright as the previous reviewers have stated. It's a wonderful area to walk through in the evening where there are lots of restaurants and cafes.
We were in Zurich on a day where daytime temperatures were in the 80s. Unfortunately, our room had an outside window that faced the street that had both a funicular and a streetcar line. There was a fan control, but that didn't seem to make any difference. We were tired after a day of traveling, so when we were ready for bed and realized how warm the room would be, it seemed too much to ask for a room change.
We booked our room on line and I was under the impression that breakfast was included in the price. However, when we checked in, we were told that breakfast was going to be 15 CHFr per person. That on top of 195 CH Fr for the small room we were in.
We ended up buying baked goods from the farmer's market and getting coffee for considerably less and more romantic as well!

Hotels in Zurich are extremely (and absurdly, in my opinion) expensive, so you don't have much to choose from in the budget domain. Hotel du Theatre is in a nice location just across the river from the train station, and the rates are relatively affordable for Zurich. The bad news is that the rooms are incredibly small. So small that there's not much room left to walk around. The shower was so small that I kept banging my elbow against the wall when I shampooed my hair (and I'm not an extra wide person or anything). There is also no air conditioning, and as a result the rooms can get very hot. Opening the window is an option, but only if you're on the West side of the building. On the East side, you face a busy (and noisy) road, making leaving the window open less of an option if you're trying to get some sleep at night. The staff are only moderately friendly. And worst of all, the breakfast is NOT included in the room price (I stayed in 6 hotels in Europe this summer, and this was the only one without an included breakfast). They will charge you 15 Swiss Francs per person for breakfast (about $12). Starbucks, which is just around the corner, is a little less expensive if all you need is coffee and a pastry.
In sum, it's OK, but expect to get what you pay for I suppose.

There is nothing human about the hotel du theatre. If all you want is a location fine. The rooms are small in the worst way .. with sharp coners on everything. The staff are lazy, and since there is no air con, hot, so they are reluctant to help or be friendly outside of checking you in. DONT BE FOOLED BY THE USE OF THE WORDS COOLING SYSTEM ... And Im not saying this as a Fat American tourist ... I stayed in smaller rooms and not felt this un-cared for ... Nothing was thought out... try and open a window to cool off and you knock over a chair. try to move the chair in to get some room to move around, and you find a ledge. Take a shower and the whole bathroom is sopping wet ... Towels? you must be joking. Open the closet door and you must position yourself just so as to not cut your foot on the shape edge of the bed. The lighting in the bathroom is extermely hot and since everything is wet quickly becomes a sauna .. not a good thing when you are trying to shave. But the real kicker is arriving at the door past 12 am and finding the front desk man has passed out in the second floor cafe.( I know because after I got in I saw him in there myself snoring whilst someone else was buzzing the door.) NO AMOUNT OF RINGING OR BANGING WILL RISE HIM. At this point simply walk across the street and ask the guy at hotel Rutli to call for you. And he very kindly will. Please tip him as he will go out of his way to help you. In fact plan on staying there as I can see in the rooms and they are nicer, but if for nothing else do it for the night doorman .. really a nice man. The front desk will inform you the next day that there is a way of opening the front door with your room key ( a great thing to know after the fact ) But when they show you how .. dont feel bad you didnt see it .. really...And the doorman from across the way will be more than happy to help you find it .. even After 2 am. Once I was able to get into my hot room I cut my leg on the bed and decided never to stay here again, and I hope after reading this .. you wont either. If you are cheap and dont mind being treated like cattle this is your hotel .. but if you want to feel like someone wanted you to be happy while in Zurich ... stay across the street at the Hotel Rutli.

We stayed at the hotel for a week while in Zurich. As others have commented, the location is great, close to the train station, lots of places to eat nearby. It is very urban, so noisy with the windows open, but the windows did an amazing job keeping the noise out when closed. The hotel was kept very clean and neat, no complaints there. Staff were nice and helpful, all with good English skills. The breakfast buffet was very nice and delicious and we enjoyed it every day. The rooms were small, we had a suite, but honestly, the chairs were more in the way then ever used. The space for clothes storeage was well used and spacious. Would definetly recommend and stay again.

My husband and I chose to stay in this hotel in Zurich with our 11 month year old son. My husband arrived early in the morning ahead of us and the front office gladly took our luggage. We arrived in the afternoon by train. It was an easy stroll to the hotel from the main station. The location is excellent, literally down town. Our check in was friendly and professional. Our room was nicely decorated and the standard of cleanliness was immaculate. The room size was comfortable for the 3 of us and despite being in a busy area our room was very quiet. The bathroom was modern and the shower fantastic. The towels and linen were of good quality and soft not hard like many hotels. House keeping answered my request for tea and coffee making facilities promptly. Our baby was happy playing in the room, the furniture was safe with no sharp corners ect. In the late evening as we returned to the hotel the front office assistant was extremely helpful in giving out extra pillows, kettles and other items to guests. The breakfast in the morning was excellent with a good variety of food, the breakfast staff were polite and obliging making us wonderful Caffee Macchiato's and playing with our son, the enviroment was relaxed and friendly. Check out was problem free and the hotel held our luggage once again to be picked up in the evening. Over all our experience was very positive and we will stay there again on our next trip to Zurich.

A well located hotel a 5 minute walk from the train station. Rooms were recently renovated, great bath rooms, excellent water pressure in the shower. Theatre themed rooms with great photographs everywhere. Staff was very pleasant. Bed was very comfortable. Free internet in the hotel lobby across from check in desk. A great, affordable hotel in the heart of the city. Would definitely stay again.

Hotel du Theatre is a hotel located right at Central, which is close to grocery shop, Bahnhofstrasse (main shopping street), Hauptbahnhof (railway station) and around the corner from the Old Town. The entire hotel is inspired by 'theatre', and this is reflected through signature carpets and photography in the rooms.
Reception:
Efficient, however, it is staffed by ladies who do not seem to want to be there. They are certainly not there for the best of the customer. I found them uninterested and at times rather rude in the way they responded to special requests, e.g. a fan for the room.
Lifts and public areas:
The lift is big enough for about four people and serves all floors of the hotel. Corridors bright and clean.
Room:
Having stayed in this hotel on numerous occasions, my experience is that the rooms vary greatly in size. On their website, the hotel offers both single rooms (Standard Plus) and Superior Queen rooms. One is given the impression that the Superior Queen rooms are in an upgraded room category, however, my experience is that there is no perceived difference between the two room categories, and therefore, paying for Superior Queen is a waste of money. The only difference, I believe, is that the Superior Queen room has a bed 20cm wider. Some rooms have flat-screen TVs. Bathroom is bright and clean. Rooms are extremely hot in summer, and the hotel has not got table fans for all rooms (if you ask for one at reception, you are likely to get an abrupt 'NO'). Some rooms, facing the street where there are tramlines, are noisy.
