Nestled in a prime Zurich location, the Baur Au Lac hotel is celebrated for its palatial charm and chic atmosphere, reminiscent of an opulent home with festive decorations. Many guests cherish the spacious and well-appointed rooms, though a handful have encountered construction noise or snug quarters.

Detailed Reviews
Don't know of any other hotel open to the public since 175 years. That is certainly a distinctive tag, but what is really remarkable is the incomparable service, with extremely well trained and cheering staff. Food is above any standard in terms of quality and fresh ingredients, atmosphere is what one can dream about when thinking on those belle epoque times when luxury hotels were measured by how comfortable they were able to make guests feel.
Being within short walking distance to any point in central Zurich is an added value to all those others great details.

The Baur au Lac is a family jewel for over 5 generations of hoteliers. All went through the famed Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, the Harvard of F&B post grad studies. And it shows. Everything is in the (many) details that differentiates an hotel from a palace. First the welcome at the entrance is a welcome. You do not wander around the lobby. You’re being accompanied to a quick check in and within minutes to your room. Rooms are of high quality, large, clear, modern & contemporary with beautiful marble bathrooms and every amenities you can think of. Several restaurants are waiting for your lunch or dinner, all highly rated. And they deserve their rating -thus I only had dinner at the Brasserie Baur- a very good business dinner. Do not miss the lobby bar, by the chimney, it is a must stop place where Crystal Roederer is being poured by the glass…

We spent the final night of our 16 day European holiday at Baur au Lac. I highly recommend booking transfers through the hotel because we absolutely loved our driver. The Mercedes S Class pick-up and the Rolls Royce airport drop-off were both seamless. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our room. For my birthday, they had a cute chocolate cake set up in our room, which was a nice touch.
Having come from staying in a spectacular suite at the Four Seasons Florence, the room at Baur au Lac was just OK. The room was small and a bit dated, as was the bathroom. For the price point, the room was a disappointment.
Service was outstanding. Mr. von Rechenberg was a wonderful and welcoming host throughout our stay. He is a true asset to Baur au Lac.
For dinner, we enjoyed the special NYE experience at Chalet au Lac. Being able to watch the fireworks in the private park after midnight was magical. This was probably the best part of staying at Baur au Lac, and I recommend it if you are there for New Year's Eve.

I booked a Room at Baur au Lac in Zurich with the souvenir of wonderful past trips to ZÜrich in an hotel that was legendary to me in my mind. Over the last 10 years I have travelled around the world and were lucky enough to enjoy the luxury of 5* hotel. To me it’s always an experience and a wonderful moment when you are far away from home.
But sadly this trip came with a huge disappointment. The Baur à Lac doesn’t match t it’s 5* status.
The lobby is old and sad, the elevator carpet need a change, the clientele as lost it’s glamorous vibe. The Michelin star restaurant opens only on Saturday, the one I ended having dîner is so disappointing that even Pizza Hut would have been better. Bref all is sad here. The biggest shock came 10min after my arrival. After having booked a room with Lake view (I would call it partial) for over 2’300 cHF per night, I have the unpleasant surprise to receive a little note with an ugly plastic bag containing sleeping earbuds. The message apologised for the noise that a building site will be generating during the night. How can this ever happens…. Did the hotel called me prior to arrival to inform me of that? No. Did the manager of the hotel came to apologise and offer compensation??? A drink at the bar, à dîner… NO. Just a little note dropped at your door Informing you that your night will be a nightmare. Too bad for me who chose to have the night of my 50th birthday at the Baur au Lac….

Response from Wilhelm Luxem, Geschäftsführer at Baur Au Lac
Responded 3 Sept 2021
Dear Mr. 807fredt, thank you for your feedback. We understand your astonishment receiving a note on arrival regarding a possible noise disturbance. Of course, we would have informed you upfront, had the information be available to us. We have been informed the day prior to your arrival from the neighbourhood that some transfer of building equipment will take place over night. As a measure of precaution, we have informed all hotel guests with rooms facing the concerned area to better keep the windows closed. As you know, there was finally no noticeable disturbance from the building site. As far as renovations are concerned, you stayed in a recently renovated luxury junior suite with a wonderful view over the hotel park, lake Zürich and the Alpes. At Baur au Lac we are renovating constantly to stay tuned with the expectations of our many esteemed guests from around the world. All public areas and restaurants have been carefully renovated over the past years. In fact, the hotel lobby is indeed the remaining last part of this renovation programme. We are presently in the planning stage. The hotel entrance including the lobby area will be renovated next winter and spring. I sincerely hope we can surprise you with the result next year. As far as the fine dining restaurant Pavillon is concerned, we are very sorry that it was only available Fridays and Saturdays in the past weeks which is due to current challenging circumstances. It is planned that Pavillon will be open again Tuesdays through Saturdays as of mid-November. We are very sorry if you have not been satisfied with our offer at The Terrace or Le Hall which have been available during your stay. I would truly hope I can learn more about your specific concerns and would appreciate if we can discuss this in a telephone conversation. My email address is GMoffice@bauraulac.ch. If you would kindly provide me a telephone number and a suitable time to talk, I will be delighted to call you personally to discuss your specific concerns. As a regular and happy guest in the past, I am convinced, that we can exceed your expectations in the future as well. Please give us a chance to prove it. With personal regards Wilhelm Luxem General Manager

Whao... Where do I start. It was my honeymoon stay from South Africa and I was amazed about the professionalism and perfection guests are treated.
The shuttle picked us up from the airport. One of our bags was left behind in Doha but the shuttle driver was very patient with us and so we left for the hotel.
The check in was amazing. The staff treated us like royalty. We were upgraded with our Diners Club program and was allocated a Junior Suite... it was absolute perfection from door to door. The inside was a perfect setting for a romantic night and trsnquiled stay.
The breakfast was fantastic. With so much to choose from (both hot and cold)
The cheese selection was astonishing with ample to choose from.
My wife was coughing during our arrival and so the concierge organised the pharmacist to contact us and gave us medication. Whao what an awesome service. She even followed up to find out if she was o.
The breakfast in room was great with an amazing romantic setting perfect for a couple.
The high tea was absolutely perfect with such professionalism with true 5 star setting.
The dinner at the pavilion was fantastic.. Much deserved michelin star. The food was to die for. With perfect fine cuisine on every meal.
I must thank the concierge team that allowed me to order some twg baur tea even when the shop was closed due to renovations.
What more can one say.... In just saying thank you for truely offering a unique experience leaving guests with memories that will last forever!!

I have stayed at the Baur Au Lac multiple times over the years. It had always been such a pleasure to be there because the service had been flawless in all respects. I just returned to the hotel for the first time since Covid and I am sad to say that the standards have slipped.
While the team at the front of the house - drivers, concierge, front desk, restaurant staff - are still first rate, the housekeeping services have been a great disappointment. For every day during my stay (three days so far), I have had to ask for my mini bar to be replenished, and for soap and shampoo to be regularly replaced. In a hotel the caliber of the Baur Au Lac, I should not have to ask for these things to be done. Today, the third day of my stay, I called housekeeping at 8:15 am and requested that my room be serviced by 2:00 pm. When I returned to the room at 2:30pm, it had not been touched. I then called housekeeping and asked them if they could clean my room by 3:30 pm and was told that would not be a problem. However, when I returned to my room at 3:30pm, it was still not cleaned. I spoke to housekeeping again, and was told they would now start to clean my room. I am typing this while sitting on the patio of the hotel, as I am waiting for them to clean my room. After a long day of meetings, I just wanted to return to a clean room. Instead, it has been an afternoon of frustration. I am very disappointed.

Wonder how can this hotel ever get a single good review .
To begin with the hitel is under renovation so the entrance is make short at the back … no mention of this when you book or on their website .
We continue our entry .
Right from the word start they were just so cold .
“Of course we will give you the best “ . Is how you are welcomed when you request for a hood room with a view.
We are taken to our room and we Lok out to a construction building with net on it. And that’s the only view … there is a trolly out as a make shift for tea coffee In The room .
The two chairs shown in the picture of . A deluxe double room are pushed away !!
We request for a change of room we are taken to a smaller room with view of the canal form the balcony .. surely not acceptable !!
Anyways we continue with our room given and night arrives . Our room is Right on the road with lots of traffic . Try to shut curtains they don’t pul !! There are no sound proof windows or an extra set of curtains to help noise reduction . At 1 0 pm we call house keeping and she says the same curtains can’t be pulled !!
Ask for a room change again and after half hours the same room shown as available and of course we didn’t change !!
We were to stay four nights but in the morning we decide to check out and come to burgenstock in lucern an amazing hotel . There we were paying 1100 here 1400 but worth every penny !!
Well due to construction between the breakfast areas and reception there is a bump I fell and so did four others but the hitel replies .. ahh there are signs we have put and even the gm says the same … no regret ..
so go at your own expense of course but at the cost of your own dignity too . I think our room number was 204 .. but my advice avoid this hotel

Dear guest Thank you for taking the time to share your personal experience during your recent stay with us at the Baur au Lac. We value your feedback. As mentioned during our conversation prior to your departure from the hotel, we deeply regret that, despite offering three alternative room options, we were not able to find a consensus. At the same time, we hope that you can understand that due to very high the occupancy of the hotel, a complimentary upgrade to a higher room category could not be offered for the duration of your intended stay. Yours sincerely, Wilhelm Luxem

In a city like Zurich, which serves as a global financial crossroads and a haven of cosmopolitanism, Baur au Lac stands out as a bastion of refined luxury and sophistication. Overlooking the majestic Lake Zurich and framed by a private garden, this 5-star hotel is more than just a place to stay: it's a sublime odyssey into the art of hospitality.
Impeccable reception, but...
Crossing the threshold of Baur au Lac is like entering another world, a world where elegance is the norm, not the exception. The staff are impeccably dressed, and courtesy is palpable. However, despite numerous visits, the reception has not been able to evoke that "homecoming" feeling typical of elite hotels. This shortfall might be attributed to staff turnover, a variable that could benefit from greater attention.
Aesthetics and history: a happy marriage
The hotel's design is an admirable example of how tradition can coexist with modernity. Every corner, every room is a testament to the skill of architects and interior designers who have collaborated to create a unique and engaging atmosphere while respecting the building's rich history.
Cuisine: an unparalleled journey
Baur au Lac's kitchen is an experience in itself. From the first to the last bite, you find yourself immersed in a symphony of flavors that seem to dance on the tongue. It's a feast for the senses that goes well beyond culinary conventions, elevating each meal to an unforgettable experience.
Rooms: luxurious, but no pool
There's no denying that the rooms are a paradise of comfort and luxury. However, it is surprising that a hotel of this stature does not have a swimming pool, a detail that for some might blur the image of a 5-star hotel.
In conclusion: a jewel with minor flaws
Baur au Lac is undoubtedly a pearl in Zurich's hotel landscape, but a pearl with some imperfections. Despite the lack of a swimming pool and a reception that could benefit from greater personalization, the hotel deserves a 5-star rating for its commitment to excellence in other areas. It's a place that almost touches perfection, and its slight shortcomings can be easily overshadowed by the numerous advantages it offers.

When a hotel charges more than $1k a night, the guest has an expectation that the experience is worthy of the rate. This hotel has significant construction going on at a restaurant, at least 10 rooms, and the large building next door is also under construction. This should be disclosed prior to arrival. The check in process took 45 minutes, as the first room was right next to the construction, when we made it clear we did not want to hear the pounding noise from the construction, they asked us to wait in the lounge and have a snack and a beverage as they found a new room. The hostess sat us at a table next to the entrance to the lounge and then disappeared, we waited 10 minutes and were saw a waiter or waitress. We eventually were shown a second room above the construction, where the noise was equally bad. Eventually, we were given a lesser room with less noise. When we selected the room, we were told they would update my profile to note that I prefer a room away from the construction, which implies most people enjoy the construction. I could go on about the four hours and three phone calls to get a more firm pillow, or the lack of turn down service at night, but I don’t think it will make a difference. Advice to management, guests who pay well over $1k a night expect you have figured out customer service. As an example, while staying at the Peninsula in Paris, there was an issue with my room at check in. The front desk representative apologized, and walked with me to their beautiful patio and told the waiter to look out for me and anything I ordered was at no charge. The issue was as solved in 10 minutes and I felt like the staff was looking out for my best interests.

+1
We love EVERYTHING about this hotel! The food was amazing (though we didn't try all the restaurants). The location was great! The staff were friendly. The rooms were AMAZING.
The hotel is classically elegant, the rooms have actually keys (not key cards). We loved it!
We considered extending our stay just to experience the hotel.
