Although I’d read that the entrance to Hotel Hirschen would be challenging to find it was more of a challenge than anticipated. Look for the vintage wooden door between an apothecary and steak house. It will have Hotel Hirschen above the door. Push open the door and walk up a half flight of stairs to the reception area.
Reception is staffed 24 hours a day with helpful and knowledgeable staff. There is an elevator adjacent to reception to zip you and luggage to your room. The beds and pillows are comfortable and feel like you are floating on a cloud. The room was spotless and the shower was easy to operate with great water pressure.
Breakfast is breads, fruit, cereal and deli meats served off the reception area.
I stayed a week and enjoyed my visit.

We had a last minute change of plans and my original hotel in Zurich had no availability for the new dates. Hirschen was the only one that seemed acceptable by location and I hoped that it would turn out to be better than the 7 rating on the booking sites. Well the moment you arrive you understand why it's not rated any higher. Another reviewer described it as shabby and that's the most fitting one word description of this place. From the entrance (hard to find) to the lobby (non existent) to the room (tiny and dark) I kept thinking, is this place really charging me close to $300 a night? Unfortunately yes. No elevator from street entrance to reception so if you have heavy luggage be forewarned. Dark and shabby reception area. Room is clean enough but tiny without much lighting and shortage of wall outlets. No aircon just a table fan - which is good and must be used or you'll suffocate in the July heat. Except then you won't be able to plug in the fridge because there aren't enough outlets. Bed is very soft - you'll get a backache if staying more than one night. Shower is the size of one person with a wraparound curtain which will keep being stuck on you while showering.

The only thing going for the hotel of course is the location. It's right in old town, and about a half km from the train station, walkable to everywhere. The cold breakfast (optional whether included in the room) in the only bright room next to the reception is adequate with cereal, cheese, cold cuts, some veggies/fruits and pastries. You can also boil your own eggs to preference in the boiler which is a plus.

Hotels in Zurich are supposed to provide a free transportation card for guests for the trams etc but this place doesn't.

Dear Paxa, we thank you for your review and regret that we could not meet your expectations. First of all I would like to remind you that the Hotels in Zurich does not provide free transportation cards. This is in several Swiss cities such as Basel, Geneva, Lausanne ..., but not in Zurich. You have booked in a more than 600 years old building which is listed, for this reason, we are unfortunately unable to offer you large, light-flooded rooms and an elevator down to the street, but from reception area as you know. When you buy a mattress you have such a wide choice from very soft to very hard, because everyone has different needs. It is very difficult to meet the needs of every guest and we regret that we have not succeed in your case. We hope that you nevertheless had an enjoyable stay in beautiful Zurich.

This hotel is showing it’s age a bit as one too many guests have banged their suitcases against the walls. The breakfast offerings were typical of European hotels but one unique and greatly appreciated was cooking your own eggs! Typically you are presented with hard boiled eggs but here you have the cooker and the option for soft boiled! Be aware while breakfast is served at 0700 not everything is out immediately. Sit down have some coffee and remember your on vacation. The room itself was small (my short wife could touch the ceiling!) but they are quite adequate and you are in the heart of Old Town! I would recommend this hotel for anyone who isn’t worried about having all the flourishes of a high end hotel.

Dear Family Ingram- Stahl We are glad your stay with us was finally possible after postponing it. We have started the renovation of the rooms early 2020 and have finished the category we have the most rooms just before the first lockdown. From one day to another the hotel was empty and the hotel industry in the towns have not recovered until today. We are a small independent hotel and we could not continue spending money on renovations when we did not know if we will survive this pandemic. Then all our 9 staff members would have lost the job as well as the clients with prepayments - such as you - would have lost their Money. We are glad that we are still open and we hope that we will back on business soon so we can continue with the renovation which will include painting the walls. We are sorry that you have missed some items at 7am when the breakfast starts, we should actually be ready at that time. We hope that you have enjoyed your stay in Switzerland and it would be a pleasure to welcome you back one time.

Rooms basic but clean. Night porter very pleasant & very helpful however other staff begrudging or unhelpful . Advised on check in that the breakfast was 10.30. Sat Sun came down at 10am all the croissants gone. Monday came down at 9.40am told VERY directly by OLDER chap (possibly rude owner) breakfast finishes a 10am. We pointed out the time & he just shrugged. We said well can we have some bread or croissants from the back (we had paid breakfast). He said he had none. He should have, as we had paid for the 4 of us and only 2 there at that point, if they ordered enough food, should have been something left. We grabbed a coffee and spoonful of yogurt and granola trying to get ahead of him and a young women clearing ahead of us. Then I left a flip flop on my room when I checked out. I realise before i left. Reception reluctantly let me up again to look for it , but it wasn't there. She did try to call house keeping (this was in the afternoon about 3pm) she said she tried and no answer that she had checked a trolley & could find it. Wasn't overly happy to do so. Knowing Id come from UK and the hotel was quiet though she speaks to someone. All very surly which was not the experience we'd had elsewhere throughout our stay in Zurich. People elsewhere were far more friendly and welcoming. Rooms noisy from busy square below but once that died down a seemingly endless stream of skips on wheels were being pushed about. Take earplugs .No air con, just a basic fan. Note, need a different adapter for Switzerland. Nice night porter did lend me one. Definite atmosphere and no chit chat among the staff quite telling. If not fussed then A good location for the money but again take ear plugs. Building lovely and historic. I wouldn't stay there again, unless under new friendly management. Make sure you are at breakfast at least half an hour before they advise the end time or you will be disappointed & don't think they overstock in food. Don't think he'd have taken that attitude had I gone with my burly husband and not my girlfriends. Hope this helps

Small, basic hotel with a convenient location, but...
Hotel Hirschen is conveniently located 10 walking minutes from Zurich's main train station on the town's main party mile, Niederdorfstrasse. This also is a drawback as the venue, on a Sunday evening, was ful of noisy revelers. My tiny room gave out on an alley way between Niederdorfstrasse and the Limmat quai. When the racket from the partygoers subsided there was still plenty of noise from trams and traffic on the Limmat. I cannot imagine staying there in the summer in a room without AC and unable to keep the window open because of the noise.

The tiny room and even tynier bathroom were not made for comfort. The narrow bed was OK for me as solo traveler but for 2 adults it would be very cramped. No electrical outlet at the small desk to plug in electronic gear. The coffee maker was a pleasant touch.

What made the stay really unpleasant was noise from the restaurant below my room, with a compressor cutting in and out about once a minute. Impossible to fall asleep and no one at the reception after 10 p.m.

Breakfast was OK and included in the room price.

If you want a bedget hotel in central Zurich the Hirschen is OK but avoid rooms above the restaurant. And mind the noise / no AC issue on hot days.

Due to COVID-19 in the United States my non-refundable reservation at Hotel Hirschen was in peril. I contacted Hotel Hirschen about my concerns and was presented with a resolution that was both reasonable and fair to both parties. Thank you very much Silvia for handling matters the way you did. Your explanation and customer service are very much appreciated.

This hotel is more hostel style, minus the communal bathrooms. The location is convenient as it is in old town and 10 min walk from the train station. However, because it’s in old town the building is old and does not have AC and the bathroom is really small. We stayed here during the summer. Although they say that you can open the windows, this is hard because of the loud noises from the party-goers, train, and early morning noises of things being rolled on cobble streets. It is also hard to take a shower comfortably because of the heat that accumulates in the tiny bathroom.
Also, please be aware that you need to climb about 12 steps with your heavy suitcase to get to the receptionist. An elevator is only available after you climb the first set of stairs. So if you are dealing with any back pain, cardiac or respiratory issues, this is not the hotel for you.

This hotel definitely does not live up to the significant prices they charge. But there is a friendly dog on site.

The Hirschen is perfectly located. The rooms were a bit on the small side but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and the staff was very kind and accommodating (especially in getting us early check in after a red eye!). Stay here for any quick trip to Zurich! Also the best fondue restaurant is right next door.

Loved this centrally located hotel with a family feel. It’s in the middle of Old Town and the train station and Landesmuseum are an easy walk away, as is the Polyterrace on a fine day. We were lucky enough to get a room with a terrace. Beds are comfy, breakfast had a good selection of tasty local treats. We also enjoyed the wine cave in the basement of the hotel, where staff members introduced us to some delicious local wines and chatted with us about the history of the building. Would definitely return!

Hi - there is no air conditioning but they will provide fans in the room if needed. There are two windows that open as well. Although it was warm during the day when we were there in June, it did cool off in the evening so we didn't even need a fan.
