A lovely hotel. Very warm (too warm sometimes - had to turn off the radiator in the bedroom!). Staff were all welcoming and very friendly. Food was exceptional - it was extremely well presented and there was a great variety throughout the week (we had booked a package holiday whereby we didn't get to choose what we ate each night). My husband is coeliac and so must eat gluten free food, the hotel understood this and provided safe, interesting alternatives for him if he couldn't eat the same as the rest of us. This is quite unusual, especially in a country with little understanding of, or provision for, those people who need to eat gluten free for health reasons.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights over Christmas (25 - 27th Dec). The hotel is very nice with a warm welcome from the hosts and convenient for the lift up to Hasliberg. We were a family of 4 and had half board. The quality of the meals in the evening was excellent and they were very accommodating for my wife’s dietary requirements. All in all we had a fantastic stay.

My fiancée and I stayed three nights at the Alpbach. It's run by the Gerbers, two friendly but somewhat opaque persons. When we arrived at the Meiringen station, Theres came to pick us up in the hotel van; her husband drove us back at the end of our stay; call ahead for this free service.
The hotel has a childish theme: kids' trains are on the hallway walls and most strangely on the blankets. We felt four years old as we got into bed. But the rooms and baths are spotless.
It is difficult to get a decent view of the alps anywhere in Meiringen, since the town is in the Aare Valley, just where it narrows into a gorge. However, a south-facing room should let you see the Reichenbach Falls.
Our only shock came from the meal in the vaunted restaurant. While salad and soup were delicious, the "medium" steak was cooked to a cardboard like consistency, while the "Geschnetzeltes" was so salty as to be almost inedible; it set us back over 100 CHF. For a tastier and much cheaper meal, try the cafeteria at the Migros Market on the main street near the train station (food-line closes at 6:30 PM).
The hotel is frequented by older tourists from Germany & France, and regular townspeople sit at the small bar next to the elevator.

This could be a really solid hotel but, for me, climate control is an issue during the summer. There is no a/c (which I knew) and I suppose that is ok in Switzerland 85% of the time. But what about the 15% of the time when it is over 80 degrees F as it was when I visited?

If you open the window, which I did, they're is lots of noise outside and it doesn't help if there isn't a breeze. I asked for a fan and there wasn't a single one in the entire hotel.

To be clear, a fan would make a huge difference in mitigating the heat & they cost almost nothing in comparison. Unfortunately, no thought seems to be given to buy some even when it's hot and a guest asks about it.

That is a deal breaker for me and, had I not been staying as part of a hiking package via Sunstar, I would have chosen a different hotel.

Now, with all that said, if you stay any other time of year other than summer, it isn't an issue. The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean, and the wifi worked well. The food was very good as well.

So, if cooling during the summer isn't an issue, then I would recommend this hotel. If it is an issue for you, then you may want to consider other options that at least offer a fan.

The staff could not do enough to help us. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the bedroom we had on the third floor was very pleasant with mountain views. The breakfast was good with a variety of food for example scrabbled eggs, bacon, sausage, cold meat, cheeses, bread, Breakast cereals, jams, good coffee and other beverages. It is very handy for the railway station and the owners were happy to transfer our luggage although it is only a couple of minutes walk.

My husband and I would certainly stay again. The nearby cable car trip to the Alpen Tower is a trip not to be missed.

Just returned from a stay at this family run hotel as part of a GRJ trip. Fabulous hotel, delicious home cooked food, altogether a great place to stay, ideally located for days out. The owners and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Just a wonderful experience

Well located a little over 5 minutes walk from the bus/rail station, this was a replacement hotel offered by GRJ and proved an excellent choice for a week's break in this part of Switzerland. Rooms were traditionally furnished, spacious and with good en suite facilities; housekeeping was faultless. At all times, the young team headed up by a welcoming, professional young couple, made you feel at ease, served excellent meals and for them, nothing was too much to ensure you enjoyed your stay. Others have commented on the ubiquitous chiming church clock - this is a country of clocks - get over it and enjoy a good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed! Thoroughly recommended.

Lovely hotel with super staff ! There is a church nearby with bells that strike throughout the night. With windows shut the noise is minimal and does not disturb sleep. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk up a slight slope from the railway station. There is a specific bar serving draught beer, bottled beer and wine. Large beer approximately 6 Swiss francs. Small glass of wine approximately 5 Swiss francs. Bottle of wheat beer 7 Swiss francs.
Rooms are comfortable with a flat-screen TV and a shower style bathroom. Some bathrooms are glass enclosed, and though slightly opaque do not offer a great deal of privacy for friends who are travelling together rather than couples/partners. I found the beds rather low tho comfortable ( I am over 6') . Meiringen is quite a small town and claims to be the the site of the origin of meringue ! Two smallish supermarkets and shops and bars along the main street. A small supermarket by the railway station. The hotel is approximately half an hour's walk from the Reichenbach Falls. 15 minutes from the cable car. and a 5-minute ride on the small blue train to the Aareschluct.
Very good information centre at the railway station with English spoken.
Bus station immediately opposite railway station.
ATM at the bottom of the road.

We enjoyed our stay here very much. The rooms are a bit small by American standards, but typical of Europe. Very clean, nice beds. The staff was very, very accommodating. I wish they had a larger area to store your luggage if you arrive before check-in, but that isn't a big deal. Rooms do not have air conditioning, which was a bit of a problem during the hotter days, and the windows didn't have screens. The nearby church rings bells all around the clock, but to be honest it wasn't a problem. Our plan provided breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was a buffet, plenty of food, plus they would cook eggs for you in the kitchen. Very satisfying. Dinner was a fixed menu, but they could accommodate food allergies if you informed them. Dinners were very filling and very well prepared, but in retrospect I would have rather not had dinner included so that we could try other restaurants nearby. And you don't have much of a choice, there is one fixed menu (on the plan). All food was excellent and very high end, but some choices weren't to our taste. Kangaroo for one meal, for example. The location is just a few blocks from the train station, and a few blocks from the ski lift (to hiking areas) and a kilometer or two from Reichenbach Falls and the Aare gorge

The hotel is very well located directly in the centre of Meiringen. The rooms are clean, but not big (especially the bath) and the food is good. There is nothing to complain. The hotel team did a good job and they were friendly.

Even though we were a bigger group (over then 10 people), even though we booked our rooms directly at the reception and even though we were spending a lot of money in the restaurant - summarized a couple of thousand Swiss francs - you expect more heart from the hosts. It would be really easy to get an excellent or a very good.
