The hotel has a childish theme: kids' trains are on the hallway walls and most strangely on the blankets. We felt four years old as we got into bed. But the rooms and baths are spotless.
It is difficult to get a decent view of the alps anywhere in Meiringen, since the town is in the Aare Valley, just where it narrows into a gorge. However, a south-facing room should let you see the Reichenbach Falls.
Our only shock came from the meal in the vaunted restaurant. While salad and soup were delicious, the "medium" steak was cooked to a cardboard like consistency, while the "Geschnetzeltes" was so salty as to be almost inedible; it set us back over 100 CHF. For a tastier and much cheaper meal, try the cafeteria at the Migros Market on the main street near the train station (food-line closes at 6:30 PM).
The hotel is frequented by older tourists from Germany & France, and regular townspeople sit at the small bar next to the elevator.
If you open the window, which I did, they're is lots of noise outside and it doesn't help if there isn't a breeze. I asked for a fan and there wasn't a single one in the entire hotel.
To be clear, a fan would make a huge difference in mitigating the heat & they cost almost nothing in comparison. Unfortunately, no thought seems to be given to buy some even when it's hot and a guest asks about it.
That is a deal breaker for me and, had I not been staying as part of a hiking package via Sunstar, I would have chosen a different hotel.
Now, with all that said, if you stay any other time of year other than summer, it isn't an issue. The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean, and the wifi worked well. The food was very good as well.
So, if cooling during the summer isn't an issue, then I would recommend this hotel. If it is an issue for you, then you may want to consider other options that at least offer a fan.
My husband and I would certainly stay again. The nearby cable car trip to the Alpen Tower is a trip not to be missed.
Rooms are comfortable with a flat-screen TV and a shower style bathroom. Some bathrooms are glass enclosed, and though slightly opaque do not offer a great deal of privacy for friends who are travelling together rather than couples/partners. I found the beds rather low tho comfortable ( I am over 6') . Meiringen is quite a small town and claims to be the the site of the origin of meringue ! Two smallish supermarkets and shops and bars along the main street. A small supermarket by the railway station. The hotel is approximately half an hour's walk from the Reichenbach Falls. 15 minutes from the cable car. and a 5-minute ride on the small blue train to the Aareschluct.
Very good information centre at the railway station with English spoken.
Bus station immediately opposite railway station.
ATM at the bottom of the road.
Even though we were a bigger group (over then 10 people), even though we booked our rooms directly at the reception and even though we were spending a lot of money in the restaurant - summarized a couple of thousand Swiss francs - you expect more heart from the hosts. It would be really easy to get an excellent or a very good.
"Rooms facing the main road are probably the quietest. No air conditioning. Local school nearby."Read full review
