Value
The Foresteria Valdese is one of the guest houses of the Waldensian and Methodist Church in Italy. We are a non-profit making guest house: our mission is to create value to our customers and the income is used to fund and sustain social projects in Italy and in the world for youth and elderly people. The house is just few minutes away from St. Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge. It offers to its guests a warm and welcoming environment in a typical eighteenth century palace and it is a perfect starting point to visit such a magic city as Venice is. The Foresteria offers bed and breakfast accommodation for singles, couples, families and groups. No AC, we have fans in the rooms. Some rooms are with canal view and some are decorated with frescoes. We have bedrooms for 1/2/3/4 people and family rooms for 6/8/9 people. They all have either ensuite or private bathrooms. Breakfast hall is also available for your own picnic, you can use 2 fridges and 1 microwave. Concert hall is also available for conferences. Every 5 days we change the linen. Some rooms have TV, and there is a TV in 2nd floor near the children corner. Hairdryer is present in many rooms or is available in reception.

This was quite possibly the most beautiful place I stayed in in Europe. The ceiling frescoes in the mens dorm were definitely a highlight. Located well within walking distance to many of the attractions in Venice it was a bit hard to find the first time. The accomodation was very cheap and they supplied breakfast. They also have classical concerts in the dining room which guests get in to for free.My only crticism would be that some of the staff were a little rude but the atmosphere and price more than made up for that.

Our college group stayed in this hostel the week before Easter. It was simple, clean, comfortable. Quite difficult to locate but walking distance to everything. The bathrooms were clean and well furnished. Recommend it to anyone looking for simple, affordable and comfy. The reception area is only open a few hours a day, though.

Good location..good price . But that is it. We did not get the room we booked. A group of teenage kids had rented alot of rooms and were running around all hours of the night..I blame the adults in charge for not making sure they were obeying all the rules . But the best was when I went to tell the front desk in the morning she turned it on me that I should have did more research on what I was booking. Rules here are quiet after 10pm!

My husband and I travelled to Venice as part of our honeymoon in May 2005. Our stay at the Foresteria Valdese Hostel was one of the most memorable parts of our jouney across Europe; for positive reasons. Check-in is restricted to certain times in the day; however, you are able to leave your luggage in a storage room if you arrive early. We had our own private double room (shared facilities) with 2 balconies that overlooked the canal. To add to the romantic setting, the walls of the room were adorned with mural paintings; albeit requiring some restoration due to cracks in the walls, but we thought that added to the beauty of the room and to the entire venice experience. The shared bathrooms were modern and always clean. Breakfast is standard continental; with bread and cereal. The staff were extremely helpful and accomodating; allowing us to check out the night before we were leaving so we could catch an early train. And just to top it all off; the location was fantastic!!! Santa Maria Formosa piazza with a couple restaurants/bars is only a couple of minutes walk from the hostel and only a short 10 minute stroll away is Piazza San Marco and all it has to offer...
The only minor annoyance was that the rooms are off-limits for a couple of hours during the day for cleaning. Other than that we loved the Foresteria Valdese; it was excellent value for money, with excellent facilities and location; we would definitely stay here again!

This must be the best deal possible for lodgings in Venice. Some hostel/dorm style rooms but also a number of private rooms (book well in advance!) Our room was small but delightful--twin beds, a television and a wardrobe pretty much filled the space. But the walls were frescoed and we enjoyed a balcony overlooking the canal.

It is a little hard to find at first but if you find your way to Campo Santa Maria Formosa just walk down the calle that starts between the espresso shop and the Hotel Scandanavia.

Very close (10 minute walk?) to San Marco but enough off the beaten path that you avoid some of the throngs of tourists.

Breakfast is pretty spartan--dry cereal, rolls with butter and jam, tea and coffee--but the coffee is strong and it's probably enough to start you on your way, at least till you get to one of the nearby bakeries for some more food.

One drawback--noise. Our private room was next to a dorm full of a high-school group and they were pretty loud, well past official quiet hours.

My last trip to Venice lasted one week and I divided my accommodation into three different places in order to have a richer experience of the different areas -or sestieri- of the city.

Foresteria Valdese is in the Palazzo Cavagnis. It is run by the Waldesian Church that took over the building around 1868 and since then it is being restored in different stages. It is located in the sestiere of Castello, very close to Piazza San Marco and to Rialto Bridge. Just off Campo Santa Maria Formosa at the end of a narrow street between the Scandinavia Hotel and the bar with the biggest display of tables in the same square. Continue along the street and the Palazzo Cavagnis is just across the bridge at the end.

I heard about this place years ago and I was looking forward to staying there. I was not disappointed. The building is magnificent. The room had two large windows overlooking the canal. The bathroom was kitted out with lovely toiletries. Everything was spotlessly clean and the area is very quiet at night. The rooms have TV and heating for the winter. Altough there is no air conditioning we did not even open the windows at night.

Breakfast was abundant: selection of juices, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, breads, jams, tea, coffee, cold milk and hot milk too! More than enough to start the day. The staff were friendly and the rest of the guests were very correct. Most of them were Italian families which made breakfast time very picturesque for a foreigner.

I would recommend this place to people with an appreciation for Art and Venetian architecture. If you're too fussy please go somewhere else because the true luxury you are going to find in Foresteria Valdese is the possibility of enjoying an old palazzo and waking up to the canals and the real Venice.

I will definitely stay again in the future.

We had a fantastic stay at this hostel last week. Although quite basic - our room had a TV and the bathroom looked brand new. Everything was spotlessly clean. This hostel was fairly quiet - no huge socialising oppurtunities, but it was nice to escape the noisyness of the touristy areas of Venice. Only slight complaint would be that it was so hard to find - we got lost several times - but once we were there we got our bearings, and Venice is notoriously hard to navigate. All in all, fantastically good value in a great location.

Many people opt to stay outside of central Venice because it is so expensive. This 16th century palace hostel run by the Waldensian church is a great find - 10 minutes from San Marco but in a non-touristy area. Some of the rooms are quite updated, some are older but have frescoes on the ceilings and walls (it is a palace after all). Great place, easy to find (once you find Santa Maria Formosa, walk between the cafe and hotel Scandinavia and you are there).

We had a great experience with the Foresteria Valdese. I found it easy to make the reservation, initially by phoning from Canada then confirmations by email. Our check-in went well and we were able to leave our bags as we arrived early. Found staff very helpful. Breakfast basic but enough for two teenagers to get started - cereal, yogurts, coffee, tea, hot milk, chocolate, jams and buns. Coffee and tea available all day as is shared fridge. We had room for 4 which had one bed down and 3 beds in loft-room. Lots of storage and far superior to other rooms we have experienced elsewhere in Europe. 120 euros for canal view, 4 person with breakfast, for 3 nights - unheard of in Venice. Loved the atmosphere of the old building. Location next to canal and easy access to Piazza San Marco and Rialto bridge, shops and all other sites. Good services, food in nearby square. Agree with critique about some mold in shower and would have liked some wifi but overall, highly recommend.
